Isaac Watts' popular and often reprinted work of moral and divine songs for children. This work was first published in 1715 and went through more than one thousand editions by the mid 19th century. 'Divine Songs' collects together didactic moral poetry for children the best known in this volume being 'Praise for Creation and Providence' 'Against Idleness and Mischief' and 'The Sluggard'. Undated dated the prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Boards are rubbed resulting in a small amount of loss of paper to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Bound without endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Scarce work. Illustrated with numerous vignettes. A collection of educational moral and religious verses for young children with titles such as: 'A General Song of Praise to God' 'Praise for Creation and Providence' and 'Praise God for Our Redemption'. Written by Isaac Watts an English Congregational minister hymn writer theologian and logician. He was a prolific and popular hymn writer and is credited with some seven hundred and fifty hymns. In the original quarter calf with paper covered boards. Externally sound with light wear and fading to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards with a light tide mark to the front board.
