He Was A Prolific And Popular Hymn Writer And Is Credited With Some 750 Hymns.Watts Could Not Attend Oxford Or Cambridge Because He Was A Nonconformist And These Universities Were Restricted To Anglicans-As Were Government Positions At The Time.Watts Wrote A Textbook On Logic Which Was Particularly Popular; Its Full Title Was Logick Or The Right Use Of Reason In The Enquiry After Truth With A Variety Of Rules To Guard Against Error In The Affairs Of Religion And Human Life As Well As In The Sciences. This Was First Published In 1724 And It Was Printed In Twenty Editions.Isaac Watts' Logic Became The Standard Text On Logic At Oxford Cambridge Harvard And Yale Being Used At Oxford For Well Over 100 Years. Charles Sanders Peirce The Nineteenth-Century Logician Wrote Favourably Of Watts' Logic. When Preparing His Own Textbook Titled A Critick Of Arguments: How To Reason Also Known As The Grand Logic Peirce Wrote "I Shall Suppose The Reader To Be Acquainted With What Is Contained In Dr Watts' Logick A Book. Far Superior To The Treatises Now Used In Colleges Being The Production Of A Man Distinguished For Good Sense." Watts Followed The Logic In 1741 By A Supplement The Improvement Of The Mind. This Also Went Through Numerous Editions And Later Inspired Michael Faraday. It Was Also Widely Used As A Moral Textbook In Schools. Small chips to front covers of both volumes and a larger chip in the rear cover of volume two. Edges worn and crackled; leather of hinges is cracked but covers remain attached. Books should be handled gently. Pages lightly age-toned; a few marginal pencil notes in volume one. Otherwise text clean. Some wear and flaws but a readable set nice for its age overall. Size: Around 7" or slightly taller - Duodecimo 12mo. 330 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight. Hardcover in full polished calf with a contemporary red leather panel on the spine with the title "Watts on The Mind." Corners turned in. Hinges in good shape and intact; the leather is not worn through at the hinges as is the case with many 18th century leather-bound books. The paper is toned from age and there is foxing and other stains in the first 130 and last 30 pages. The six leaves of the first signature including the front free end paper title page Introduction and Tables of Contents have a half-inch tear at the bottom of the gutter. One leaf pp. 117-118 has an old repair of a closed tear that does not affect any text. There is a paste-down label from the Belgrade Social Library No. 69 on the inside front cover.
