Green watered silk end-leaves. Expertly and almost invisibly rebacked with the original spine laid down spine very slightly sunned otherwise a fine example housed in its original felt-lined green cloth clamshell case spine lettered in gilt.<br /> <br /> Walton's famous pastoral work on fishing The Compleat Angler is combined here with additions by Robert Venables and Charles Cotton on the art of fly fishing in particular. Walton the son of innkeepers moved to London to become an ironmonger but would spend the last forty years of his life collecting information and writing on fishing. The book was first published in 1653 but re-released in numerous editions both due to its popularity and Walton's propensity to revise and contribute more chapters to it. It has stayed in print since it was first published and is noted for its well observed descriptions of English country life. "The Compleat Angler has something in common with 'Lady Chatterley's Lover:' while many know the title few have actually read it. Yet it's the most frequently reprinted book in the English language after the Bible" The Guardian.<br /> <br /> George Bayntun 1873-1940 was the founder of Bayntun Bindery 1894 dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" Princeton. Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939 transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery" which is still in existence and family owned. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway 1742-1821 the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie 1849-1940. As the style grew in popularity other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style." <br /> <br /> Coigney 18. Goldman 36; Singerman 630.       <br> The First Complete Machzor Jewish Prayer Book Set for the full year printed in America a stunning complete set.       <br> Isaac Leeser 1806-1868 was a central leader of American Jewry in the mid-19th Century the stalwart defender of Orthodoxy against the rise of the Reform movement. He was the head of the Jewish community of Philadelphia and acted as a cantor philosopher publisher and author of many sermons and essays. He was key in the founding Jewish institutions and publications central to the building of Judaism in America including the original Jewish Publication Society the Jewish Sunday School movement and many key translations of Hebrew texts into English.       <br> As such he was the first Jew to translate the Hebrew Bible into English publishing The Five Books of Moses in 1845 followed by the full Twenty-Four Books of the Old Testament in 1853. His other major translation is that offered here the first Machzor Prayer Book set for the full year published in America in 1837-1838.Publication in this case was a complex project. Leeser based his new translation on an earlier London edition improving upon both the English translation and the original Hebrew which are presented in facing pages. Once the translation was ready for publication he ordered new Hebrew types from Europe but could not find printers who were familiar with Hebrew–so he taught two Christian printers Hebrew in order to prepare them for the printing.       <br> In spite of the difficulties involved all six volumes of the machzor set were published in a total of only 13 months. Leeser marketed his prayer book to audiences in both America and the British Empire and therefore included prayers on behalf of a monarch British and a republican government America. The work also includes a fascinating two-page list of subscribers spanning the Eastern US as well as Jamaica at the end of Vol. VI. The same volume here includes interesting margin notes in pen from a period Rabbi or service leader.      <br> With an original run of only 500 sets complete sets of the first edition such as this are very rare. A set sold at Christies in 2006 for $60000.<br> SUBJECTS: Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. Passover -- Judaism -- Sephardic rite -- Fasts and feasts -- Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Picture of Rosslyn Chapel &amp; Castle. Edinburgh: Published by Oliver &amp; Boyd &amp; J.&amp;J. Johnstone 12th Sept. 1825. 12mo pp. 15 1 engraved title-page and 7 further plates. And: Waldie George A Sketch of the History of the Town and Palace of Linlithgow. Linlithggow: Printed and published by A. Waldie 1843. FIRST EDITION 12mo pp. 36 frontispiece. The three works bound together in 19th century quarter red roan tan boards edges sprinkled red. A touch of spotting a few small tears to folds of map. Spine rubbed boards somewhat soiled. Slip of card identifying the author of the first work loosely inserted. Three small local history titles bound together. The first has a small piece of card with a clipped address and stamp to the reverse postmarked 1902 the slip identifies the author as Elgin Bookseller Isaac Forsyth and claims &lsquo; This edition is known as &lsquo;the little Isaac&rsquo; to distinguish it from a larger edition&rsquo; - Forsyth&rsquo;s 1798 octavo publication &lsquo;A Survey of the Province of Moray Historical Geographical and Political&rsquo;. Library Hub records 4 locations holding this edition: BL Glasgow NMS and Aberdeen the last of which implausibly attributes it to Cosmo Innes who would have been 15 at the time of publication. Following this is a small illustrated history of Rosslyn Chapel without a letterpress title-page but apparently as issued - some libraries catalogue it with the drop-head title &lsquo;Description of Rosslyn Chapel &amp; Castle&rsquo; from page 1 while the NLS catalogue describes it as A set of engraved plates with a descriptive text. The final work trimmed slightly smaller than the other two is the first edition of a Linlithgow guidebook which reached a 4th edition in 1894. Library Hub records 2 locations for this printing: the BL and Glasgow. Printed by Michael Anderson, for I. Forsyth hardcover‎

‎TO THE PEOPLE OF THE SOUTH. SENATOR HAMMOND AND THE TRIBUNE. BY TROUP. TRACT NO. 3‎

‎Charleston: Evans & Cogswell 1860. 23 1 pp. Disbound light spotting and some pages tanned. Good. <br /> <br /> This 1860 Association Tract contrasts the New York Tribune's ugly distorted view of the South with the "cool-headed sensible unimpassioned" views of South Carolina's Senator Hammond. Tracing the intractable conflict between North and South to the country's birth the author asserts "It is a great mistake to assign the election of Lincoln as the CAUSE for a disruption of the Federal Government. It is but the occasion." Secession and a separate Southern slave-holding Confederacy are passionately urged. <br /> The last page unnumbered prints the 'Constitution of 1860 Association' whose purpose is "promoting resistance by the slaveholding States to the aggressions of the non-slaveholding States." This is one of two 1860 Charleston issues. <br /> III Turnbull 306 different imprint. Not in LCP. Evans & Cogswell unknown‎

It began as a "suggestive purchase list" prepared by Bertha Mahony Miller and Elinor Whitney Field proprietresses of the country's first bookstore for children The Bookshop for Boys and Girls. Opened in 1916 in Boston as a project of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union the bookshop closed in 1936 but The Horn Book Magazine continues in its mission to "blow the horn for fine books for boys and girls" as Mahony wrote in her first editorial. In each bimonthly issue The Horn Book Magazine includes articles about issues and trends in children's literature essays by artists and authors and reviews of new books and paperback reprints for children. Articles are written by the staff and guest reviewers including librarians teachers historians and booksellers. The January issue includes the speeches of the winners of the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award and each July issue includes the same from the winners of the year's Newbery Medal and Caldecott Medal. The Fanfare list published in December is the editors' selection of the best children's and young adult books of the year.3 No lists were published from 1941 to 1945 or 1955 to 1958. ‎REPORT TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR ON PRISONS PRISON DISCIPLINE AND THE CRIMINAL LAW BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL‎

‎Columbia S.C.: R.W. Gibbes State Printer 1852. 24pp stitched. Untrimmed minor edgewear generously margined light toning and foxing. Very Good. <br /> <br /> A rare early informative Report on prisons and South Carolina's criminal law. The Report recommends changes in the penal law; not Hayne assures from "sympathy with the spirit of indiscriminate and sweeping innovation which to some extent is the characteristic of the age and which absolutely runs riot in many of the States of this Confederacy." South Carolina has a low crime rate: "more than half of our population and the portion amongst whom from their position crime would naturally most abound are slaves who are kept in order without a resort to the Courts." But he fears an "alarming" rise in crime in Charleston. Urging greater efficiency "in detecting crime" he recommends employing prosecutors in each district and "physicians for post mortem examinations in murder cases." <br /> Hayne wants to streamline outmoded judicial procedures allow appeals "in cases not capital only on cause shown" to curtail the power of pardon with standards to guide issuance of pardons to curb the most wretched prison conditions particularly housing "the arrested debtor and the innocent witness" with "the convicted felon"; and to provide separate cells at night and employ prisoners in shoemaking and other useful tasks. An Appendix prints valuable data on the prison population of South Carolina. <br /> III Turnbull 143. Cohen 4567. Not in Harv. Law Cat. or Marke. OCLC 8348549 3- Harvard U Chi. ‎[Historiae Augustae] (Casaubon, Isaac, ed)‎

‎Historiæ Augustæ Scriptores Sex. Aelius Spartianus Julius Capitolinus Aelius Lampridius Vulcatius Gallicanus Trebellius Pollio et Flavius Vopiscus .‎

‎Parisiis Paris: Apud Amberosium & Hieronymum Drouart . cum privilegio Regis 1603. First edition thus. 2 parts in 1 vol. 4to. pp. xx 375 lvii; 576 xxxvi. Illustrations in text. Title-page to first part in red and black to second part in black only woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces with final errata leaf. Top corner of title-page a little frayed first leaf of text with 2-line note in blue biro to head margin head margins a bit dusty with very occasional light dampstains occasional spots of foxing a few paper flaws to fore-edge margins. Small scorch marks to pp.47-8 and pp.101-4 affecting a few letters smudgy mark ink or wax to fore-edge margin pp.115-22 ink spots to p.345. Contemporary semi-limp vellum fore-edges slightly overlapped. Quite browned covers somewhat creased ties lost turn-ins lifting without ffep but still good and sound overall. Latin inscription in an old hand to title-page translates roughly as 'from the common library of the preachers of Dijon'. First appearance of Casaubon's edition of this collection of biographies of the emperors from Hadrian to Carinus considered to be the first critical edition and also the first to use the title Historiæ Augustæ. The title as recorded on the 9th-century Codex Palatinus manuscript of the Vatican Library is Vitae Diversorum Principum et Tyrannorum a Divo Hadriano usque ad Numerianum Diversis compositae and it is generally thought that the work may have been originally known as de Vita Caesarum or Vitae Caesarum. In early editions 'the emphasis had been laid on the Latin text but in the seventeenth century the work of the editors included not only textual emendation but comment and illustration. Of these editions the first was that of Casaubon published in 1603. It was not unnatural that these biographies should have attracted the editor of Suetonius and Polybius and the scholar who wrote in the preface to his edition of the Historia Augusta that "political philosophy may be learned from history and ethical from biography."' from David Magie's introduction to his 1921 Loeb edition. Though its authenticity was regarded with a little scepticism Casaubon's edition was for hundreds of years used as a genuine source by historians including Edward Gibbon in the first volume of his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Browning sums up the tricky position the work occupies: "in modern times most scholars read the work as a piece of deliberate mystification written much later than its purported date however the fundamentalist view still has distinguished support. … The Historia Augusta is also unfortunately the principal Latin source for a century of Roman history. The historian must make use of it but only with extreme circumspection and caution." 'Biography' in The Cambridge History of Classical Literature: Volume 2 1983. Graesse III 303; Sandys II 209; Schweiger II 384. Parisiis [Paris]: Apud Amberosium & Hieronymum Drouart, [...] cum privilegio Regis, 1603. hardcover‎

Early American Jewish merchants Isaac Moses & Sons operated on Greenwich Street.Isaac Moses 1742-1818 was born in Giessen Germany but moved to New York in 1764 and in 1766 he became a “freeman†of New York City. He became a prominent businessman and American patriot. He worked in his uncle's Hayman Levy's mercantile firm until he established Isaac Moses & Company with two new business partners in 1775. The separate atlas format allows for larger clearer mechanical and astronomical engravings than the inline plates of earlier printings making this edition particularly well suited for institutional reference in the history of science technology and scientific pedagogy.</p> Printed for W.
