FIRST EDITION of MacLaurin's most important work including a strong defense of Isaac Newton and the first full presentation and development of Newton's calculus. The William Jones- Macclesfield copy. "Colin MacLaurin was a younger contemporary and to some extent a protégé of Isaac Newton and he wrote the first thorough systematic axiomatic development of the method of fluxions the Newtonian version of the calculus. MacLaurin's magnum opus the Treatise of Fluxions published in 1742 was begun as a response to Berkeley's Analyst. MacLaurin founded the method of fluxions on a limit concept drawn from the method of exhaustions in classical geometry avoiding the use of infinitesimals infinite processes and actually infinite quantities and avoiding any shifting of the hypothesis. In addition he went on in this treatise of over 760 pages to demonstrate that the method so founded would support the entire received structure of fluxions and the calculus and could deal effectively with all of the challenge problems then being exchanged between British and continental mathematicians" Oxford National Biography. Very Good/The Latin edition of Newton's 1704 Opticks was intended for the broader pan-European "Republic of Letters" and it was the first printing to carry Newton's name on the title. This is the edition that inspired Emelie du Chatelet and Voltaire and through them the whole of Europe. It is a compendium of Newton's main discoveries concerning light and color including the spectrum of sunlight the color circle the reflecting telescope and interference effects that is the so-called 'Newton's rings'. In expansion of the 1704 English text the Latin edition presents seven added "Quaestiones" which are partly devoted to Newton's support for the "corpuscular" or particle theory of light. The collation of this copy corresponds to the copy in the Babson Collection catalogue with "Pp" consisting of a single leaf and with pages 21-24 repeated in the Tractatus. . So reluctant in fact that Newton kept his name out of it and supposedly considered purchasing the press run in order to destroy it! He later republished it himself. Several new theorems are laid out including a formula to determine the number of imaginary roots of any equation. The rule is complicated and is offered without proof. Yet 180 years later the rule was proven by rigorous analysis. The text also includes Edmond Halley's "Aequationum radices arithmetice inveniendi methodus. In addition the Jesuits' edition of the Principia is prized for the inclusion of the important treatises on the theory of the tides: Daniel Bernoulli's Traite sur le Flux et Reflux de la Mer Colin MacLaurin's De Causa Physica Fluxus et Refluxus Maris and Leonardo Euler's Inquisitio Physica in causam Fluxus ac Refluxus Maris. These three works gained the prize given by the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1724 for resolving tidal problems relating to the theory of gravity. ‎PREMIÈRE ÉDITION FRANCAISE de cette histoire des premières grandes civilisations, à savoir celles des Grecs, Egyptiens, Assyriens, Babyloniens, Mèdes et Perses. L'édition originale, posthume, a été publiée à Londres la même année, et traduite de l'anglais en français par François Granet et Marthan. COMPLET des TROIS PLANCHES dépliantes gravées sur cuivre, représentant des plans du Temple de Salomon. Composé par Isaac NEWTON (1643-1727) pour son propre délassement, ce système chronologique a été publié à son insu par un certain Abbé Conti, à qui Newton en avait confié une copie. Il se trouva ainsi obligé, contre son intention, d'en donner une édition plus fidèle, mais il ne put que la préparer, la mort le surprenant avant sa publication. Pierre Daunou (1761-1740) a donné dans la "Biographie Universelle" de Michaud une longue note érudite à propos de cet ouvrage, note qu'il conclut en ces termes : «En perdant sa base astronomique, le système chronologique de Newton ne repose plus que sur des considérations relatives à l'histoire, à la durée des générations et des règles, aux progrès des sociétés, des arts et de l'idolâtrie. Quelques graves que soient ces observations, et quelque incertitude qu'elles puissent répandre sur la chronologie vulgaire, elles ne suffisent point assurément pour en établir une nouvelle. Mais ce système est un très grand fait dans l'histoire de la science chronologique ; et il sert au moins à confirmer ce qu'à dit Varron, que l'âge historique ne commence qu'à la première olympiade » (Tome XXX, pages 397 à 400). Exemplaire de Louis-Nicolas-Jean-Joachim de CAYROL (1775-1859), député de 1820 à 1822, commissaire des guerres sous la Révolution, puis commissaire ordonnateur et sous-intendant militaire.
