London: John Murray 1838. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5". None stated. The first edition of Robert Isaac and Samuel Wilberforce's five volume biography on the life of their father William Wilberforce covering his life and efforts to abolish slavery with a bookplate and signature from William Wilberforce. The first edition. With a signed note by Wilberforce. This is clearly an earlier note as this work was published after his death. With the bookplate of 'William Wilberforce' to the front with his gift inscription tucked inside the endpapers of 'Vol I'. The inscription reads 'Given to my dear Saml 16th may 1829 by W. Wilberforce'. Illustrated with monochrome frontispieces including a folding timeline of the abolition of slavery to 'Vol II' and three folding facsimiles of Wilberforce's handwriting to the rear of 'Vol IV'. Collated complete. A five volume complete set. Five years after his death the sons of William Wilberforce Robert and Samuel Wilberforce published this five-volume biography detailing the life and accomplishments of their father. William Wilberforce was a British politician philanthropist and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade alongside activist Thomas Clarkson. The work sparked some controversy after Thomas Clarkson expressed distaste for their biased version of the role William played in the abolition movement. The volumes explore the man's childhood education his conversion to becoming an Evangelical Anglican and his expansive political career. There are also letters that were sent by Wilberforce included in the text. Previously owned by Godfrey F Laurence with their family bookplate being the descendants of French Laurence who is mentioned in this work. In the publisher's original cloth re-backed with endpapers renewed half titles retained. Externally very smart with slight fading to the extremities of the boards the odd minor mark and the slightest edge wear. 'Laurence' family bookplate and bookseller's label to the front pastedowns and owner's signature to front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages with the odd spot. Very Good Indeed John Murray hardcover
