This is very attractive work of designs for storefronts and specialized doors issued by the leading publishers of architectural works of Britain the Taylor's Architectural Library. The Taylors father and son were shrewd businessmen and gave priority to the practical manuals required to support the building boom of the late eighteenth century. These scenes were written and illustrated by the Rev. Isaac Taylor 17591829 a nonconformist minister who like his father was an accomplished engraver. The stories and accounts of creatures such as beavers and rattlesnakes come from South Central and North America including items from Mexico Canada and Patagonia; strong abolitionist themes are notable and sympathy for indigenous peoples abused by conquering invaders although also present are underlying assumptions that English ways are sanest and most logical. The text is => illustrated with 28 copper-engraved plates laid out in double-page spreads each side of the opening with three images as issued uncolored in this copy.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Half-title with inked inscription of M.A. Nelson dated 1821; most recently in the children's book collection of Albert A. Dramatic engraving of the murder of David Rizzio the central fallen figure held by two assailants with drawn sabers in the presence of Mary Queen of Scots just to the right being restrained by an armoured man. "Rizzio rose to become the private secretary of Mary Queen of Scots. Mary's husband Lord Darnley is said to have been jealous of their friendship because of rumours that Rizzio had impregnated Mary and he joined in a conspiracy of Protestant nobles to murder him" source: Wikipedia. Handcoloured etching and engraving sheet size 600 x 445 mm. Made by Isaac Taylor of Ongar after John Opie published by John and Josiah Boydell in 1791. Isaac Taylor of Ongar 1759-1829 was an English engraver and writer of children's books. John Opie 1761-1807 was an English historical and portrait painter. He painted many of the Greats of his time including several members of the British Royal Family. In fair condition cropped within platemark and mounted on canvas. Pinholes in all four corners. Surface soiling throughout as well as small spots of surface damage. Edges uneven with tiny nicks and creases. unknown
