Whereto is prefix'd an Essay toward the Proof of a Separate State of Souls after Death. London: Printed. Boston: New-England re-printed and sold by Rogers and Fowle in Queen-Street 1748. First American edition. Two octavo volumes bound in one: 2v412-1893; 2v210-1924 pp. Volume two has a separate title-page at the beginning and a publisher's prospectus dated Boston 15 April 1748 and advertisements at the end. Pages 63 and 183 of v. 2 are misnumbered 67 and 185 respectively. In a worn contemporary full leather binding with corners rounded and missing a piece of leather on lower board. The bookblock shows evidence of early repair having been resewn in a couple of places with the front fly-leaves and title-page resewn as well. The edge-chipped fly-leaves have early ink ownerships Bridget Taylor 1788 and John Walton 1777. The text leaves are lightly thumbed at fore-margin with occasional foxing and/or light soiling. One leaf I8 has loss at the inside bottom corner just touching the initial or final letter of type in the lines near the bottom of the page. Several of the leaves have dog-eared corners. Isaac Watts 1674-1748 was born in Southampton and was a noted minister and writer. He started his career as a minister in 1698 at the age of 24 but his considerable output of published works is probably his most significant contribution. He is probably best know for his extensive publication of hymns and for his Horae Lyrica first published in 1706. The Psalms of David was first published 1719 and has appeared in several editions. Wakefield: Printed and Sold By J. Starfield. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1820. Unknown Possibly 1st Thus. Hardcover. A small provincial imprint chapbook published in WAKEFIELD Yorkshire. A most attractive little publication 4" x 2. 5" approx 10cm x 6.5 cm in sewn blue wraps with a woodcut of children praying around a table below the title in a charming decorative border. Very clean. Internally the woodcut and title is repeated on the first page - a good deep impression - NO date shown but likely 1815/30 . The rest of the book is unillustrated but contains what is probably a version of Watt's 'The First Set of Catechisms and Prayers; or the Religion of Little Children under Seven Years of Age'. 30pp. Excellent condition clean tight and bright. NO inscriptions or marks. "Isaac Watts is most well-known as a Nonconformist hymn-writer. Many of his compositions are still in common use today & his Divine Songs first published in 1715 is considered the first hymn-book for children. Wattss non-hymnal writings include catechisms composed for children of various ages. The first set for children under seven years of age & the second set for children from seven to twelve years of age. This early nineteenth century edition begins with 'The First Catechism of the Principles of Religion' - ending with 'The Young Child's Grace after Meat'. Scarce. See Images. ; 4" x 2.5" . Full tan calf spine stamped in gilt double gilt ruled border to boards. Marbled endpapers. Front board detached bottom joint starting edgewear corners rounded. Edges toned. Pencil POI by Phillida Gili to ffep plus contemporary smudged/scrubbed out POI in brown ink to title page detailing "Bath 1820" some toning. Else clean and bright. Good- Jisc LHD locates three copies only BL NSL & TCD. A delicate copy of the unusual miniature edition of this juvenile title based on the writing of Isaac Watts from the libraries of Valentine Ackland and British artist Phillida Gili. VA and Sylvia Townsend Warner likely met Gili through her parents Reynolds Stone and Janet Woods who themselves became friends through VA's antiques business which sheran from the long sun-parlour of their Frome Vauchurch home in the 1950s. VA whose shop "was especially popular with collectors of dolls' houses and miniature objects" Bingham 2021 evidently also appreciated miniature books herself. One of a collection of four miniature books from VA's library that we have handled with yet another featuring a gift inscription from the first period of her affair with Elizabeth Wade White: "V.A from E.W.W 1:1:39" these items suggest perhaps that miniature books were a lover's currency of sorts between the two women. They certainly travel compactly and can be packaged easily a consideration for such a long-standing transatlantic affair. In an odd parallel with VA EWW also went on to trade in antiquarian and collectable objects running White & Holahan Books with her lover Evelyn Holahan from their Connecticut home the Patch from the 1940s. Upon her death in November 1969 VA whose success as an antiques dealer had derived in part from her "sense of objects as individual things relics of people and containers of their love" ibid bequeathed many of her own books to friends hence Phillida Gili's inscription: "left to me by Valentine Ackland December 1969". OCLC does not locate any copies but one was located at AAS #358124. Divided into two sections the small songbook lists the words for 28 Divine Songs followed by a list of the "10 Commandments" and the "Sum of the Ten" as well as words for 3 Hosannas and "Glory to the Father." Marbled boards with recent gilt-lettered sp. fr.outer edges and back outer edge have 1 cm rubbed or faded strips. 60 pp.; opening 32-33 has some penciling in childish hand copying part of text this fairly faint but resists full erasure otherwise tight and clean bar a few minor marks of little consequence. No end-papers issued paste-downs generally clean but 2 short words and v. smbrown square top fr. and traces of erased penciling top back plus short thin brown 3.5 cm strip across bottom from gutter. First published in 1715 this now appears to be remarkably scarce.
