New York 1976. Ephemera. Very good. A short one-page letter to Ward Botsford a producer at Caedmon Records transmitting the liner notes for the album "The Mayors from Foundation Read by the Author" Caedmon TC 1527 1977. <br /> <br /> Asimov writes that he is delivering the text not present ahead of schedule and then concludes by reminding Botsford to send his payment "I hope it's suitable for what you want and if it is then you owe me $200. Right" <br /> <br /> Asimov was never shy about asking people to pay what they owed him. This letter was written near the lowest ebb of his science fiction career with this job paying just 25 cents per word. He had just published Bicentennial Man which would win both the Hugo and the Nebula awards in coming months beginning a remarkable second period of success where his Foundation and I Robot sequels regularly landed on the bestseller lists in the 1980s and 1990s thirty years after the original books changed SF forever. <br /> <br /> About 50 words on 5-3/4 by 6-7/8 letterhead. Clarke; as to the "antimatter robot" F & SF is doing a "Special Asimov Issue" in about 6 months and he Asimov had to write a novelette a poem and a complete bibliography the latter taking longer to produce than the novelette. He goes on to point out that he feels the story was lousy that Donald Wollheim wanted to use it for nothing after Tremaine not Campbell lectured me never to do this thus selling it to Wollheim instead for $5 which according to Wollheim was $2.50 a word as he too felt the story was lousy and was only buying his name that at last he will now be paid about 1¢ a word which was what he should have been paid to begin with. TYPED LETTER SIGNED dated March 2 1977 vg/near fine on the authors own stationery to American publisher poet columnist reviewer and author C. C. Clingan nearly 100 words informing him that he has virtually never written anything in the 'Weird Tales' vein except for a collaboration with best friend Frederik Pohl in Weird Tales entitled LEGAL RITES which he didn't like; that he has a 7000 word story entitled KID STUFF which was published in his 1957 short story collection EARTH IS ROOM ENOUGH which he might find suitable for publication and if so arrangements can be made. Along with a check from FICTIONEERS INC. made out to Frederik Pohl and endorsed by him in September of 1941 which carries a notation that it is for THE WEAPON by Isaac Asimov which was published in ASTONISHING STORIES. Pohl was indeed the first editor of ASTONISHING STORIES a publication of FICTIONEERS INC. and although by September he had been replaced this check shows that Pohl was acting as Asimov's agent very early on. In fact this is the first or second check Pohl had received acting as Asimov's agent a position he was soon to relinquish as Asimov preferred to have no agents. Pohl was once again agent to Asimov in a much more professional capacity in the early 1950's but this soon came to an end as well.
