‎Washington 1844. Seventeen lines of text plus salutation and closing written entirely in ink manuscript to "My dear Sir." Signed "Most faithfully yours I.C. Bates." Printed on recto of a single leaf. Matted on the verso of the inner front margin. Uniformly toned Very Good.<br/><br/> Bates 1779-1841 was a Massachusetts Whig elected to the U.S. Senate in 1841. He served as such until his death. John Tyler had been William Henry Harrison's running mate on the Whigs' winning 1840 presidential ticket. Upon Harrison's death Tyler became President-- the first to become so in this manner. <br/> Though nominally a Whig Tyler-- a Virginia Strict Constructionist who would end his career in the Confederate Congress-- broke with Whig positions on Tariffs Internal Improvements and a National Bank. These rebuffs naturally generated much dismay among Whigs who had hoped to celebrate their first presidential victory. Tyler's estrangement from the political party that made him President is reflected in this Letter:<br/> "When I recd your favor I was so much engaged in other matters I neglected an answer for which please pardon. Nothing would delight me more than to see Mr. Otis Jun on the bench of the Supreme Court & I certainly wish Mr. T. all good things; but I do not suppose there is any chance for either of them. I have no influence with the Prest. & ask of him no favors. He has put it out of the power of us Whigs to give him any support. The names of those gentlemen will be brought to his notice. What he intends to do we wait and see. He has got some state right notions in his head which he wishes to install upon the Bench. unknown books‎

‎Édition originale de la première grande étude sur le manichéisme. Cet "ouvrage très estimé" (Brunet) est le plus célèbre de l'auteur. Il est le premier à rassembler et commenter l'ensemble des textes sur l'histoire du manichéisme, depuis les textes les plus anciens connus alors jusqu'aux plus modernes. Il en commente également les dogmes et les pratiques. "L'ouvrage est rare et fort recherché pour l'immense érudition dont il témoigne" (Stanislas de Guaita). Le premier volume est précédé d'une épître et d'une préface de l'auteur dans laquelle, notamment, il met en garde les libertins contre toute récupération de son travail: Comme cette multitude de faux écrits, qui parurent dans le second siècle, fournit aux libertins un prétexte spécieux de nier, ou de rendre douteuse, l'authenticité des livres du Nouveau Testament, j'ai crû devoir montrer combien leur prétention est mal fondée. C'est ce que j'ai fait dans un discours à part. Il ne faut que lire ces écrits supposés, pour en connaître le mauvais caractère, et celui de leurs auteurs. Ce n'est pas du clinquant, qu'on veut confondre avec de l'or: c'est du fer, et des plus vils métaux. Nos livres sacrés se distinguent, par leur propre lumière, de ce fatras de livres obscurs et fabuleux. Le second volume fut publié un an après la mort de l'auteur. Caillet signale qu'il manque assez souvent. Il a "été rédigé et publié par Samuel Formey, sur les Mémoires qui lui ont été fournis par le fils aîné du défunt. L'éditeur a mis en tête un éloge de M. de Beausobre, qui ne se trouve pas dans dans tous les exemplaires." (Quérard). Notre exemplaire est bien complet de cet éloge où sont consignés de nombreux détails biographiques. Chaque volume est suivi d'un sommaire des livres et des chapitres. La découverte au cours des XIXe et XXe siècles de sources de première importance sur le manichéisme a entraîné de récentes rééditions du texte de Beausobre en 1970 et 1984. Isaac de Beausobre (Niort, 1659-Berlin, 1738), théologien et ministre protestant, étudia la théologie à Saumur. Forcé de quitter la France à la révocation de l'Édit de Nantes, il se réfugie en Hollande, puis à Berlin en 1694, où il devint pasteur et fut comblé de faveurs par le roi Frédéric II. Il traduisit et annota, avec Lenfant, le Nouveau Testament et est l'auteur de nombreux sermons, d'ouvrages sur la Réforme, les hérésies… Exemplaire de Richard Seymour Conway (1800-1870), quatrième marquis de Hertford. Héritier d'une immense fortune et grand collectionneur, il fit une brève carrière d'officier, fut nommé attaché à l'ambassade de Constantinople puis à celle de Paris. Il était également vicomte Beauchamps, duc de Yarmouth, baron de Ragley. Son importante bibliothèque se trouvait à Ragley Hall. Ex-libris gravé. Très rare exemplaire en maroquin de l'époque. He published an infamous pamphlet entitled Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladies a notorious catalogue of courtesans and their various specialties which landed him in prison for several months.
