‎London: Sherwood Neely & Jones 1819. First Edition. Scroll with wooden exterior base crown sides. Housed in a modern clamshell box quarter morocco cloth boards felt cushioning. Isaac Cruikshank. Most unusual and uncommon sporting/processional scroll with its narrow width of only 60 mm and its length of slightly over 3800 mm which depicts four different scenes in its 42 numbered and conjoined separate pieces. The first which accounts for over half of its length is the parade to an outdoor boxing match. This is actually a few distinct scenes with clear breaks between them but since they are all depicting a parade one can virtually see them as a single unbroken parade as we have chosen to do for purposes of this description and also to treat them as we believe most people would take them in. Then there is the match held on an expansive river-side meadow. In this second scene is shown the final stage of the procession to the grounds when the spectators and their vehicles had to cross the Thames all in long rowboats. The third scene is of a man being thrown from a bull. This we believe was a sideshow to the main event. The last scene is of the more respectable element probably the end of the day. In the first stretch of the scroll we see coaches and other horse-drawn vehicles some of which are rather eccentric and perhaps improvisational men atop the coaches men on horseback and on foot a man pedalling an early bicycle. All kinds of street life and local color enliven the proceeding and distinguish this one from so many that are simply a stilted parade. Accidents and mishaps punctuate the event. Horses are spooked and kick up the dirt as they suddenly race. There are the high jinx of children. As fitting the march to a boxing match there is a brawling incident. And there are spectators and bystanders that pull in a broad spectrum of London street life and do so without making an express statement about it as would a formal costume book of the day. The second panorama of the scroll the boxing match scene is teeming with people and activity the boxing match here is at the center but almost overshadowed by the fights erupting in the audience and other shenanigans. The bull fight is also teeming with movement and life. Only the fourth scene is somewhat staid an intentional anti-climax perhaps and certainly a deliberate contrast to the two middle scenes. The scroll is housed in a wooden drum with a boxing scene and the title on a paper pastedown attached to its side wall. The drum itself is a lovely piece of treen in and of itself with its crown turning pin a fine piece of wood turned work. The drum is about 10 cm tall and with the turning pin about 12 cm tall and it is about 5 cm in diameter. The paper pastedown illustration on the drum wall is very darkened obscuring in particular the print at its base but one can still with effort make out the words and the same with the illustration of the boxing match. The wooden pull pin that was at the end of the scroll is now detached along with a tiny amount of the paper part of the scroll -- this part is cloth backed the cloth surely added later. The scroll itself is heavily darkened at the outer end gradually lightening until the third conjoined panel at which the issue has gone away. Similarly at the pull's end there are a number of closed tears vertical cracks along the edge some paper repairs of these visible on the pictorial side and also some staining especially along the upper edge. This issue or these issues recedes but doesn't entirely disappear by the third panel. The paper is such that it was susceptible to what we are describing as cracking by way of explanation. Notwithstanding all the detailing of issues we are comfortable describing the original object as Very Good with the clear understanding that this is also in relation to other copies one might encounter. The modern clamshell box was very well constructed and it remains in Fine condition. Sherwood, Neely & Jones unknown‎

The King a bloated and whiskered infant sleeps in a cradle rocked by Sidmouth right a lean old woman wearing a cap and bag-wig who sits in a rocking-chair his clyster-pipe cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849 on the ground. The cradle is surmounted by a pagoda with bells and ornamented by two large crocodiles representing the Chinese dragons of the Pavilion cf. British Museum Satires No. 12749. On it are also a sun with a fool's cap in its disk between crescent moons. Round the cradle lie toys: soldiers mounted lancers &c. on wheels a cannon a sceptre a crown with a toy windmill stuck in it. With these are papers: 'Divorce'; 'Protocal' sic; 'Send her to Hell'. The infant holds a coral and bells and a corkscrew. Castlereagh sits over the fire warming a napkin. Canning see British Museum Satires No. 13737 walks off to the left disgustedly carrying the pan of a commode decorated with a crown and 'G.R.' On the chimneypiece are pap-boat bottle of 'Dolby's Carminative &c'. Dolby was a radical bookseller 'Dalby's carminative' a well-known remedy for infants. A large 'Green Bag' hangs on the wall. ‎Cheapside London: T. Tegg November 1809. NA. Very Good. Framed. 38 by 47 cm. The hand-colored engraving itself measures 24 by 33 cm. Used in a theatrical promotion for a performance by Charles Kemble at the Theatre Royale in Covent Garden in 1809. This print is part six in a set. While George Cruikshank is credited with this print there was speculation that his father Isaac Cruikshank might have collaborated on it or done it in its entirety as the style is somewhat different -- looser or more abstract in its conception -- than the other prints in the set. Here Kemble in costume surrounded by Old Price Riot iconography gallops towards "The Road to Ruin" the title of a Holcroft play performed in 1809. Old prices and economy are scattered to the winds. The horse reins and saddle-cloth are covered with particulars of the affair; likewise Kemble's clothes. Actors are likened to vagrants strollers vagabonds prostitues. Contempt for the profession was shared for different reasons by both the high and low born and Kemble was seen as essentially not knowing his proper place. The print suggests that the theater and also the nation would only be returned to health when Kemble was chastened and put back in his place. <br/><br/> T. Tegg unknown books‎

‎THE NEW SOUTH SEA FISHERY OR A CHEAP WAY TO CATCH WHALES‎

Near fine. In 1789 and 1790 Nootka Sound in the Pacific Northwest looked to be the spur of a major conflict between the kingdoms of Britain and Spain. The inlet was an important outpost for maritime fur trading and had therefore become the focus of the centuries-old struggle for advantage in the New World. Courtesy of explorer and trader John Meares news of Spanish indiscretions reached Britain in 1790 and intensified the growing anti- Spanish rhetoric and call for war. Meares whose credibility was famously contested in two remarkable pamphlets by George Dixon claimed not only that the Spanish had seized British ships but that they had removed his settlement at Nootka and replaced it with their own. After debate in the House of Commons it was decided the British Navy would be mobilized. <br> <br> While Spain initially sought to go to war they could not attain the essential support of France and thus required a diplomatic solution to the problem. This came in the form of the first Nootka Convention which was signed on Oct. 28 1790. The convention guaranteed Britain the right to have outposts on Nootka Sound and to practice whaling in waters beyond the "Ten-League Line" off the coast. The Convention eventually resulted in the seminal voyage of George Vancouver to survey the Pacific Northwest. <br> <br> This print is a satire on the British Tory government's handling of the crisis. Its central critical point attacks part of the convention concerning fishing rights which Pitt's opposition latched onto as evidence of underhanded dealings. They noted that the original importance of Nootka Sound was not for whaling but rather for fur trading and that the whaling industry had surely redirected political attention toward their interests. Thus the print shows Pitt and Henry Dundas in the Pacific off the west coast of North America hopelessly fishing with millions from the treasury. As Pitt expresses worry over the spending Dundas soothes him with the knowledge that "the Gudgeons we caught in England will pay for it all." In saying so Dundas declares the Britons who supported the war to have been bait for his and Pitt's political maneuvering. The coastline is shown from southern Alaska to Mexico likewise making this an early map of California Alaska and the west coast. <br> <br> In all it is a lively expression of disbelief and anger at the amount expended on preparing for war set against the eventual prize - namely the indeterminate profitability of whaling. A Superb Social Satire by Robert Cruikshank Ca. 1820. Isaac Robert Cruikshank son of Isaac and elder brother of the more famous George was a caricaturist illustrator and particularly apropos of the picture offered here portrait miniaturist. His first caricatures appeared around 1810 and were often produced in conjunction with his brother Geroge with whom he shared a studio. Notes Bryant and Heneage "Of his Robert's social satires those he made of the dandies and the fashion for 'hobby horses' in the early 1820s are among the most attractive."
