Isaac Holden’s Glass Lantern Slide Shows: Specimens of North American Marine Algae and Views of Newfoundland: circa 1885-1897
Bridgeport Connecticut 1897. Good. A unique collection of 87 glass lantern slides permanent positive images from the library of Isaac Holden an important Connecticut based phycologist and founding editor and contributor to the monumental: Phycotheca Boreali-Americana: A Collection of Dried Specimens of the Algae of North America. The collection consists of two sets totaling nearly 60 slides of images of dried marine algae specimens “Exsiccatae†and a set of about 25 slides taken in and around the town of St. John’s on the coast of Newfoundland. There are also a few slides of fauna insects and Holden as a dashing young man.<br /> <br /> The marine algae specimens were collected by Holden at Seaside Park along the Connecticut coast and Long Island Sound in the mid-1880s. About half of the species are identified in manuscript with the Latin name place date and Holden’s signature reproduced in the image. Three images have been dyed in red. It’s very likely that the unidentified specimens were collected by Holden and his close friend and colleague Frank Shipley Collins who co-edited and also contributed to the Phycotheca. Both sets of specimens include a few charts and figures.<br /> <br /> The set of Newfoundland views date from Holden’s 1897 trip to collect specimens of marine algae many of which were distributed in the Phycotheca. The views are of the rocky coastline and adjoining seascapes including a few snow-covered areas and several images of fishermen and other inhabitants at work in the harbor or in boats along the coast.<br /> <br /> The glass lantern slides measure 4†x 3¼†or 3¼†x 3¼†a subset of about 20 specimen slides consisting of the image plate and clear cover plate held together with plain paper folded over the edges. Many slides have glossy paper frames mounted in between the plates. The slides range in condition from fair to very good with scattered spotting and soiling. Several of the original paper edges are detached or missing a very few have been replaced with masking tape about 15 slides lack most or all of the original paper edges and are separated including a few lacking a cover plate. About five specimen slides are damaged with cracks to the glass and some deterioration to the image. About half are housed in a contemporary wooden box with chromolithographic labels from Bridgeport Connecticut.<br /> <br /> A unique and historically important research collection of early photographic images of marine algae and of the remote coastline of Newfoundland. The collection is divided into four sections:<br /> <br /> Set 1. 40 slides: North American Algae Specimens & Miscellaneous: Images of various types of seaweed and related algae.<br /> <br /> Set 2. 18 slides including three dyed in red: Seaweed and related algae signed and dated in the image: “Bridgeport Conn. 1885â€.<br /> <br /> Subset 3. 4 slides: Fauna/insects.<br /> <br /> Set 4. 25 slides: Views of Newfoundland: Images of St. Johns Newfoundland and vicinity: about half include local people. A small collection of four glass lantern slides 21 black and white photographs and additional ephemera from the library of Connecticut phycologist Isaac Holden founding editor and contributor to the Phycotheca Boreali-Americana: A Collection of Dried Specimens of the Algae of North America. The collection consists of miscellaneous materials documenting two of Bridgeport’s leading manufacturers Isaac Holden and William Skilling Mills and includes evidence of their ties to circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Two of the glass slides are partially damaged else very good overall.<br /> <br /> Born in 1832 Holden graduated from Dartmouth College and began his career as a teacher specializing in the preparation of young men for college and scientific schools. He gave up teaching in 1872 to join the Wheeler & Wilson Company in Bridgeport manufacturers of sewing machines becoming Vice President and in charge of the business until his death in 1903. His interest in botany was lifelong and he spent the last fifteen years of his life researching and collecting marine algae at Sea Island Park on the Connecticut coast and Long Island Sound as well as the inland fresh water streams and lakes.<br /> <br /> Among the photographs are several family portraits including the patriarch of the Mills family Dwight Phelps Mills and images of various family members and friends out and about in Bridgeport and Naugatuck. Also included are photographs of rugged landscapes and rocky coastline including Australia and Maine. The four glass lantern slides consist of a view of P.T. Barnum's elephants being paraded across Bridgeport’s new iron draw bridge 1888 and three unidentified portraits: a young woman in ballet slippers resembling one of P.T. Barnum's Circassian beauties; a very old woman with a remarkable furrowed face; and a very young boy.<br /> <br /> The ephemera consists mostly of printed and engraved cards etc.: Rewards of Merit religious and calling cards some of which are inscribed and woven keepsakes. Of special interest are several calling cards and identified family photographs that link the Holden family to the Stanley Brothers of Maine the earliest manufacturers of dry plate glass negatives and slides in the 1880s.<br /> <br /> A compelling small archive from this leading Bridgeport man member of the New England Botanical Club and president of the Bridgeport Scientific Society documenting the life of the city when Barnum was mayor and Olmstead had created Sea Island Park. Harvey Gardiner says of Holton's book in his introduction to the reprint: "New Granada is the fullest and best-written assessment of that country at mid-century by a foreign observer. In 1852 the bespectacled bachelor botanist carrying two bales of paper for drying plants but no passport for himself first glimpsed a tropical landscape.For twenty unhurried months on itineraries of his own choosing he traveled widely visiting many areas more than once. When he bade farewell to New Granada in mid-May 1854 his luggage contained approximately 1800 botanical specimens a diary crowded with details and vast quantities of data concerning political subdivisions mail routes altitude climate weights and measures etc." He style is full of wry Yankee humor as well which make it a good read. The appendices are detailed and in themselves constitute a gazetteer of Colombia. Much was left out of the reprint inc. the maps appendices illustrations etc. Binding is contemporary 3/4 calf over marble boards; very clean text and maps. Headpiece. 8vo. 8-7/8" x 5-5/8" <br/><br/>This first volume of the series contains the Act of Incorporation of the Massachusetts Medical Society a List of the Fellows 12 articles on divers aspects of medicine by the individuals noted above and an Appendix containing seven additional shorter pieces of a similar vein. The first paper contributed was by Edward Augustus Holyoke one of the original incorporators of the Society its first President from 1782 to 1784 and again from 1786 to 1787 and the first person to receive from Harvard College the honorary degree of M.D. Thornton p. 221 states the first US medical journal was the quarterly Medical Repository appearing in 1797- this publication obviously antedates that work by a number of years. He goes on to state p. 222 that the first Boston journal did not appear till 1806. Uncommon in the trade. Printed by Thomas and Andrews unknown books
