This edition of Boehm's writings in translation marks an important chapter in the English reception of Boehm's writings. A German mystic and self-taught theologian he believed that humanity had fallen from a state of divine grace to its present state of sin and suffering that the forces of evil included fallen angels who had rebelled against God. On these points he is consistent with Lutheran Theology. Boehme believed however that the fall from grace was a necessary stage in the evolution of the universe. It was necessary for humanity to depart from God in order initiate an evolution toward a new state of redeemed harmony that would be more perfect than the original state of innocence. God would thus achieve a new self-awareness by interacting with a creation that was both part of and distinct from Himself. Printed in Germany: 1730. 1730 Six volumes in one each with its own title page. Overall pagination = pp. 2 440; 4 244; 2 224; 4 116 Three complex engraved mystical plates. Old age and damp stain. First title page with the loss of a few letters. Old binding broken. Autograph manuscript ownership in German of "Jakob Friederich Rommel in Philadelphia 1832." This is apparently mostly from volume three of the first edition of Bohme's full works 'Samtliche Schriften.' The contents include most of his major works: Libri Apologetici; Anti-Stiefelius; Apologia contra Gregorium Richter; De Signatura Rerum oder Von der Geburt und Bezeichnung aller Wesen; De Electione Gratiae Von der Gnaden-Wahl; and De Testamentis Christi. Jakob Bohme 1575-1624 was a German Christian mystic and theologian. Born near Gorlitz where he was a Lutheran and worked as a shoemaker. Bohme had mystical experiences throughout his youth culminating in a vision in 1600 that he received through observing the exquisite beauty of a beam of sunlight reflected in a pewter dish. He believed this vision revealed to him the spiritual structure of the world as well as the relationship between God and man and good and evil. After further visions during the next 20 years he began to publish his mystical cosmological observations. He influenced many anti-authoritarian and mystical movements such as: the Religious Society of Friends Quakers; Philadelphians; Gichtelians; the Society of the Woman in the Wilderness; the Ephrata Cloister; Harmony Society; Zoar; Martinism; and Christian Theosophy. Bohme was also an important source of German Romantic philosophy influencing Schelling in particular. He was also an important influence on the ideas of the English Romantic poet artist and mystic William Blake. Very scarce. GER-GER1. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Printed in Germany: 1730. hardcover

Jacob Böhme 1575-1624 German visionary and founder of the Behmenist sects was a master shoemaker and amateur chemist who claimed to have received visions from the Holy Spirit on at least three striking occasions. At first and at the insistence of the clergy he refrained from recording his revelations but eventually he succumbed to his experiences and poured out a wealth of books many of them in the last five years of his life. His works were immensely popular in England and it has been noted that much of Quaker doctrine borrows from Böhme's works and ideas. He is aclaimed as an alchemist & Rosicrucian figure. A self-taught mystic theologian and philosopher Boehme believed that both good and evil were from God they kept the cosmos in balance the good toward God and the interruption of evil attributed to Lucifer and the fallen angels. His interest in astrology and cosmology often played key parts in writings and he believed divine essence lies within oneself that people mirror the universe and are a reflection of God. The Mysterium Magnum is his last work written in 1623 and one of the most important sources of his thought. It is an interpretation of Genesis and the nature of mystical thought. "Boehme describes God as the abyss the nothing and the all the primordial depths from which the creative will struggles forth to find manifestation and self-consciousness. Evil is a result of the striving of single elements of Deity to become the whole; conflict ensues as man and nature strive to achieve God who in himself contains all antithetical principles. Boehme exerted a profound influence on the philosophies of Baader Schelling Hegel and Schopenhauer." Columbia Ency.
