Several old hand written bibliographical notes tipped in towards end of vol 2 extra plate bound-in should be in volume one see below for more info wide margins overall nice copy interior. Volume 2: 16 plates one is misbound and should be in volume one as fifth plate mentioned above includes thirteen numbered plates at end. Volume 3: 1 text plate. Additional volume of Four Tables of Divine Revelation part of volume 3: 3 overlay pop-up plates folding rare. Original volume four is missing in its entirety thus missing the last 3 plates of the complete four volume set. Total plates = Portrait and 23 of 26. We find other copies with a reported 25 plates our set has two double-page folding plates in volume one it appears most copies only have one. One of the keystone books in the history of mysticism and the occult sciences. Jacob Böhme 1575-1624 German visionary and founder of the Behmenist sects was a master shoemaker and amateur chemist who claimed to have received visions from the Holy Spirit on at least three striking occasions. At first and at the insistence of the clergy he refrained from recording his revelations but eventually he succumbed to his experiences and poured out a wealth of books many of them in the last five years of his life. His works were immensely popular in England and it has been noted that much of Quaker doctrine borrows from Böhme's works and ideas. He is acclaimed as an alchemist & Rosicrucian figure. A self-taught mystic theologian and philosopher Boehme believed that both good and evil were from God they kept the cosmos in balance the good toward God and the interruption of evil attributed to Lucifer and the fallen angels. His interest in astrology and cosmology often played key parts in writings and he believed divine essence lies within oneself that people mirror the universe and are a reflection of God. William Law 1686-1761 was educated at Cambridge where he taught until he had to leave due to his Jacobite leanings. He was a tutor to Edward Gibbon and director of a residential charity for intelligent young ladies. He was a mystic himself and influenced the evangelical revival of the 18th century. In 1733/4 he discovered Böhme's works and felt a need to publicize them. He procured the commentaries of Andreas Freher and provided this edition with the remarkable illustrations that are his apparatus criticus to this edition. "The three principle ones are figures of man woman and the zodiac covered with symbols; various parts of these open to reveal literally occult significations of the symbols or of bodily parts; and the whole is a series of up to nine or ten layers dramatically organized to reveal at the deepest level the highest secret and greatest signification.
