In Yiddish with a Spanish title page. �German soldiers first passed through Ratne at the end of June 1941 but Nazi rule was established in the town only in July. Between the retreat of the Soviets and the arrival of German security forces and administrators locals plundered Jewish homes and businesses. Shortly after the Germans arrived they shot 27 Jews and 30 Soviet prisoners of war. Acting through the Ukrainian police they also introduced an array of anti-Jewish measures: Jews had to wear identifying armbands later yellow patches comply with a curfew hand in valuables including ritual objects and provide forced labor. It was forbidden for Jews to speak to Ukrainians. As early as July 1941 Jews from the countryside were already being relocated to Ratne. In the spring of 1942 a ghetto was set up there. After a partisan raid on Ratne in June 1942 the Germans shot more than 110 Jews along with a few Ukrainians. The Destruction of the Jewish Community. In August the Germans recruited Ukrainian peasants from Prokhid to dig pits at a nearby sand lot. On August 26 the ghetto was �liquidated� by a unit from the Gestapo outpost in Brest supported by the local German Gendarmerie post and Ukrainian auxiliary police force. Although several hundred Jews fled before they could be taken to Prokhid. Many others hid in the ghetto. Most were eventually caught and murdered as well. Between 1 300 and 1 500 Jewish men women and children were killed during this operation. A few dozen skilled laborers were left alive and employed in a workshop. Appareil de Nutrition, Organes de la Circulation et de la respiration, ou Angéiologie.L'atlas, complet, se compose de 97 planches (91 numérotées de 1 à 91 + 5 bis (5, 7, 9, 10 et 11) et 1 ter (10)), données ici dans la rare version "luxe" dont les planches ont entièrement été aquarellées à l'époque par les "petites mains" de l'atelier d'Elisa Mantois. Ainsi la partie dédiée à la médecine opératoire détaille-t-elle le matériel, les procédures, les gestes requis et les régions anatomiques concernées pour les différentes opérations, soigneusement décrites. -par la mobilisation de nombreux acteurs et corps de métiers (anatomistes, prosecteurs, médecins, dessinateurs, lithographes, techniciens, imprimeurs, éditeurs, mécènes, libraires, etc.), sous la houlette des deux maîtres d'oeuvre, le médecin anatomiste Jean-Marc Bourgery et le peintre-dessinateur-lithographe Nicolas-Henri Jacob, qui orchestrent l'ensemble en parfaite complémentarité, ce qui est inédit dans ce type d'entreprise, - où existait traditionnellement une hiérarchie stricte entre savants et artistes. ‎Reliures très frottées, mors du premier plat légèrement fendillé en tête du volume de texte (sans gravité), angles inférieurs des deux plats arrachés sur le volume de planches, rousseurs, taches et pages brunies, une déchirure sans manque ni atteinte au texte p.xlvij du Supplément (restaurée au filmoplast), mouillures marginales relativement importantes en gouttière sur les 50 premiers feuillets et en tête sur l'ensemble du bloc-livre dans le volume de texte, rousseurs éparses et mouillures saines en marge de tête du volume d'atlas, une déchirure sans manque (restaurée au filmoplast au verso) à la planche 77 , sinon exemplaire solide et lisible. Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery, né à Orléans en 1797 et mort à Paris en 1849, entre à lEcole de médecine de Paris dès 1811. Elève brillant de Lamarck et Laennec, externe en 1815, interne lannée suivante, il obtient notamment, en 1819, la médaille dor des hôpitaux de Paris. Après avoir exercé en tant quofficier de santé dans une fonderie de cuivre près de Rouen, à lissue de son internat, il retourne à Paris en 1827. Il soutient alors sa thèse de doctorat sur « lemploi des ligatures circulaires des membres dans la plupart des maladies périodiques », quil dédie à Guillaume Dupuytren, son mentor. La parution de ces travaux, ainsi que celle dun Traité de petite chirurgie (1828), rencontre un certain succès. Cest grâce au mécénat du baron Benjamin Delessert quil peut ensuite entreprendre, à partir de 1829, son uvre majeure, le Traité complet de lanatomie de lhomme, publié entre 1831 et 1854 (le dernier tome, à titre posthume), salué par ses pairs et de nombreuses personnalités intellectuelles et artistiques (Cuvier, Michelet, Delécluze, Claude Bernard, Hirschfeld). Durant les vingt dernières années de sa vie, tout en se consacrant essentiellement à cet ouvrage monumental, il étudie la respiration, le système nerveux, les structures des poumons, du cur, de la rate, de la thyroïde, etc. En outre, le docteur Félix Thibert lui avait confié la direction du Musée danatomie imitative, quil avait fondé rue du Montparnasse : il en réalise certaines pièces en carton-pâte, afin de préciser et moderniser les représentations de diverses lésions viscérales (jusqualors fabriquées en cire). Candidat malheureux à plusieurs postes ou fonctions de prestige, il confesse son amertume vis-à-vis de ce manque de reconnaissance dans le huitième volume du Traité (« Aujourd'hui, après vingt ans, je ne suis rien et je n'attends plus rien. J'en ai fini de cette révélation singulière: c'est le cri de vingt ans d'oppression qui m'échappe. Aussi je donne mon exemple à fuir, s'il se trouvait quelque imprudent prêt à se laisser séduire, comme je l'ai fait, par un amour inconsidéré de la science. Au moins, il apprendra de moi que l'ouvrage consciencieux ne mène à rien. Qu'on me pardonne cette plainte, c'est la première, ce sera aussi la dernière. » [pp. II-III]). Bourgery meurt à Passy, en juin 1849, à lâge de 52 ans, victime du choléra. Nicolas-Henri Jacob (Paris,1782-1871), petit-fils de peintre et fils de menuisier, cousin du célèbre ébéniste Georges Jacob, est lélève en peinture de Jacques-Louis David, en sculpture, de Dupasquier et Morgan. Entré au service dEugène de Beauharnais, à Milan, comme peintre de cour (entre 1805 et 1814), il se fait connaître également dans le dessin et la conception de mobilier, notamment pour Marie Desarnaud ou la duchesse de Berry. De retour en France, il ouvre en 1830 son propre cours de dessin à Paris, après avoir enseigné cet art à lEcole nationale vétérinaire dAlfort. Néanmoins, il se passionne très tôt pour la lithographie, technique alors nouvelle, et expose fréquemment ses uvres aux Salons sous la Restauration (Médaille dor en 1834). De 1831 à 1854, il sattelle à la réalisation des planches du Traité complet de lanatomie de lhomme de Bourgery, devenant un véritable collaborateur scientifique : il dirige une équipe dune vingtaine de dessinateurs et lithographes, dont Jean-Baptiste Leveillé et Charlotte Hublier (son épouse, peintre également). Il termine sa carrière en partageant son activité entre des expositions lors des Salons et lillustration en lithographie douvrages scientifiques. Il meurt à Paris, le 31 janvier 1871.
