Red and black title page frontis is missing and page iii is torn vertically and lacking 1/3 of the page Wonderful engravings and lots of them many showing the devils that beset the man attempting unsuccesfully to sleep. The first volume ends on Twee-en Tachtig Jarig Levn "eynde" then the Register van Boeken by J. en H. van der Deyster Gedrukt in Gothic type then an engraved frontis plate for the Spiegel. the title page "den lesten Druk van nieuws oversien en gecorrigeert en van veel Druksauten verbetert with the publishing information of van der utte Amsterdam but no date. Also wonderfully illustrated with engravings printed in both Gothic type and standard type. There are no final blanks for the Spiegel but it is complete. Leather boards are a bit crackled rubbed at the corners and edges. Spine has 5 raised bands with gilt decorations and a #4 in gilt spine tips are quite worn front hinge cracking and front board threatening to detach but still holding. Half title for Slapeloose Nachten has an old ownership inscription and there is a very old pressed violet at page 81 that has caused some browning otherwise clean and unmarked. Cats a Dutch �Golden Age� poet and politician wrote these rhymed dissertations on marriage and fidelity using very different marriage cases from literature in which conjugal ethics emerged. Cats� method was to treat human behavior and society in all its aspects through the lens of marriage both human and spiritual ie. the marriage of Christ and His Church. He takes examples from the Bible Adam and Eve David and Abigail etc. and from classical and modern authors Cyrus and Aspasia Marc Anthony and Cleopatra etc. Cats tells of marriages to patriarchs ancient and modern; cases from Israel Persia Egypt from the life of Charles the Great and of the Great Mogul and Spanish gypsies. Also included are discussions of marriage after rape the breaking of marriage bonds adultery and the like. Because marriage dominated all periods and regions of the world all classes all ages with a variety of feelings and soul states this work resonated with the reader although Cats� unusual storytelling intended moral and religious teachings. He propagated that marriage with its many possibilities and moral demands which it always must fulfill totally belong together: as do the ring and the stone. Cats was a distinguished Dutch writer but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still for nearly two centuries he enjoyed enormous popularity. Wonderfully preserved important work on 17th century societal structures the many engravings are delightful and captivating. This collected edition contains all his most famous works including Sinne- en minnebeelden Self-stryt all six parts of Houwelick all three parts of Trou-ringh and many others. Cats's poetry lent itself to illustration and the illustrations form an integral part of his emblematic works. He must have worked closely with Adriaan van de Venne one of the best artists of his day who executed the drawings for most of the hundreds of engravings in this edition and they were produced by the best engravers of his day. One of the double-page plates shows the famous representation of marriage in the form of a fisherman's trap. The posthumous Slaapeloose nachten and Twee-en-tachtig jarig leven first appeared without illustrations in the sixth edition of 1700 and are here illustrated with 12 engravings after Jan Goeree first made for the seventh edition of 1712.Internally in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities and parts of the spine cracked but with the tooling on the spine still very clear. Although he published nothing until he was forty years old he was very prolific for the rest of his long life. He wrote for a broad public and many of his works were illustrated with emblematic copperplates by the greatest Dutch artists especially Adriaen van de Venne responsible for many plates in the present edition. The book includes Cats's Proteus of Sinne- en minnebeelden 1618 Houwelyck 1625 Spiegel 1631 and many more. Works like these delivered him the name "father Cats" due to the educational and pedagogical character of his texts.The binding can be ascribed to the so-called "star bindery". The sources upon which Cats draws for this combination of emblem literature and love poetry are chiefly the Bible and the classics and occasionally Boccaccio and Cervantes. His first book Sinne-en minnebeelden "Portraits of Morality and Love" contained 96 emblematic engravings with text in Dutch Latin and French each emblem with a threefold interpretation expressing what were for Cats the three elements of human life: love society and religion. Perhaps his most famous emblem book written in a more homely style than his earlier works is Spiegel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt "Mirror of Old and New Times" with 128 emblematical engravings accompanied by quotations many of which have become household sayings. Two other works-Houwelyk 'Marriage' and Trou-ringh 'Wedding Ring' with 59 plates-are rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity. Finally in one of his last books Ouderdom buyten-leven en hof-gedachten "Old Age Country Life and Garden Thoughts" with 27 plates Cats writes movingly about his declining years. Contemporary vellum with 'J. Cats' in manuscript to the spine. The binding is soiled but sound the pages and plates clean but with occasional browning finger-soiling and mild staining. Marginal loss to S3 affecting neither the text nor the plate on p. 234. Contemporary ownership inscriptions to both fly leaves. Cats was one of the distinguished Dutch writers of Holland's golden age but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still for nearly two centuries he enjoyed enormous popularity. In this perhaps his most important work Cats treats human behavior and society in all its aspects through the lens of marriage both human and spiritual the marriage of Christ and His Church. Examples are taken from the Bible Adam and Eve David and Abigail and from classical and modern authors Cyrus and Aspasia Marc Anthony and Cleopatra. Also included are discussions of marriage after rape the breaking of marriage bonds adultery and the like.
