Statement on title page that this is the First American Edition from the Second London Edition. Spine repaired at ends reinforced hinges. Some age toning with foxing on endpapers. This is Volume V from a complete set of 6 volumes. Signed by President James Buchanan on the title page. This law book is from the personal library of President James Buchanan. His library was primarily held at his home in Lancaster PA called Wheatland. The majority of his presidential papers correspondence and books went to Dickinson college his alma mater. After graduating with honors in 1809 James Buchanan moved to Lancaster and became a legal apprentice to James Hopkins. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1812. Buchanan would go on to serve in the House of Representatives from 1821-1831 United States Senator 1834-1845 then as the 17th Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. He was elected President of the United States in 1856 serving one term. He predicted in retirement that "history would vindicate my memory" but his inability to stop the succession of the southern states has sealed his legacy as one of the least successful presidents in history. A scarce reference text defining and interpreting all wordsphrases manners and customs used within law at the time of publication. Second edition. Together with such informations relating thereto as explained the history and antiquity of the law and our manners customs and original government. To which is annexed A Table of References to all the Arguments and Resolutions of the Lord Chief Justice Holt; in the Several Volumes of the Reports. Although Giles Jacob was the author of over two dozen legal publications his law dictionary was by far the most successful. First published in 1729 it reached a tenth edition by 1782; revised editions continued to be published well into the nineteenth century. Its success according to was due to the fact that it combined a law dictionary with an abridgement. This fifth edition was the last to be published during Jacob's lifetime. Jacob collected and abstracted from many references including dictionaries institutes reports chronicles and year-books. Condition: Disbound although with original calf boards. Boards are a trifle rubbed with wear and slight loss. Binding is tender in places with many leaves working loose although the work is complete with both the text and table listing up to Z. Bright throughout with the occasional spot and handling mark. Small ink inscription to the title page. Overall: FAIR due to being disbound although a nice bright copy once rebound. With the errata leaf to the rear. This work discusses a large selection ofpoets such as Sir Philip Sidney Sir Richard Steele William Shakespeare Abraham Cowley and more. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller Humphrey Moseley and began his unfortunately unfinished PhD dissertation on him. No author to title page althoughthis work has been attributed to Giles Jacob. GilesJacob's main literary reputation was for his legal writings. However he also dabbled in satire withhis The Rape of the Smock a satire on Pope's Rape of the Lock. Condition: In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the boards and spine. Externally worn particularly to the joints and extremities. Loss to the head and tail of spine and cracks to the head of joints. Front board is detached but present with endpapers and frontispiece bound to pastedown. Internally binding is strained in places. Evidence of repair to the binding between pastedown and frontispiece. Blackburn Public Library Reference Department stamp to the verso of front endpaper. Shelf number stamp to the title page as well as library stamp .
