Jacob Laurensz van der Vinne (1688-1737), after Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) and Richard Brakenburg (1650-1702)
Antique prints etching Complete set of seven plates after Adriaen van Ostade and Richard Brakenburg published 1699 7 pp.
Complete set of seven etchings van der Vinne realized when he was just eleven years old. All the plates are copied after Adriaen van Ostade's works and are in reverse. The set is stitched on the left as a small album. The set is signed on the first etching: 'Jacob Vander Vinne fecit et excudit / ANNNsic! 1699'.The frontispiece features three heads of old men the one in the middle in a square frame the ones on the sides in rounded frames. The second plate 'The seller of Spectacles' has been retouched with pen and brown ink on the fence of the window on the top left. The third plate 'The empty jug' shows three peasants in an inn conversing around a table looking at an empty jug. The fourth plate depicts a knife grinder working in the middle of the street. On the bottom of the fifth plate the 'Pater Familias' is an inscription in Dutch: 'Eet soete kintjes eet je livertjes sijne Reet'. The sixth plate shows a small concert as in an interior a man plays the violin while a woman sings and another man sitting opposite to the woman sings along with a glass of beer in his hand. The last plate from the set is a copy after a painting by Richard Brakenburg 1650-1702. Possibly this last impression is the same etching inv. RP-P-1934-600 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam reported as 'Anonymous copy after Brakenburg'.NL-Ab Van der Steur: 'Serie van zeven etsen inclusief een titelblad gedateerd 1699. Op 11-jarige leeftijd geëtst! Zeer zeldzaam. Etching on paper with Amsterdam watermark; plate mark: 1 59 x 135 mm 2 109 x 91 mm 3 105 x 81 mm 4 88 x 78 mm 5 130 x 92 mm bound horizontally 6 127 x 91 mm bound horizontally 7 241 x 125 mm bound horizontally; total: 166 x 209 mm; despite some smudges due to handling all the plates are in great condition with the original thread binding. Jacob Lederman
Chasing World-Class Urbanism: Global Policy versus Everyday Survival in Buenos Aires
Hardback. New.
Questions increasingly dominant urban planning orthodoxies and whether they truly serve everyday city dwellers

What makes some cities world class Increasingly that designation reflects the use of a toolkit of urban planning practices and policies that circulates around the globe. These strategies—establishing creative districts dedicated to technology and design “greening†the streets reinventing historic districts as tourist draws—were deployed to build a globally competitive Buenos Aires after its devastating 2001 economic crisis. In this richly drawn account Jacob Lederman explores what those efforts teach us about fast-evolving changes in city planning practices and why so many local officials chase a nearly identical vision of world-class urbanism.

Lederman explores the influence of Northern nongovernmental organizations and multilateral agencies on a prominent city of the global South. Using empirical data keen observations and interviews with people ranging from urban planners to street vendors he explores how transnational best practices actually affect the lives of city dwellers. His research also documents the forms of resistance enacted by everyday residents and the tendency of local institutions and social relations to undermine the top-down plans of officials. Most important Lederman highlights the paradoxes of world-class urbanism: for instance while the priorities identified by international agencies are expressed through nonmarket values such as sustainability inclusion and livability local officials often use market-centric solutions to pursue them. Further despite the progressive rhetoric used to describe urban planning goals in most cases their result has been greater social economic and geographic stratification.

Chasing World-Class Urbanism is a much-needed guide to the intersections of culture ideology and the realities of twenty-first-century life in a major Latin American city one that illuminates the tension between technocratic aspirations and lived experience.
hardcover
