Original green fine pebble-grained cloth title gilt to the spine and front board within panelling in black brown surface-paper endpapers A little rubbed corners bumped crumpled head and tail of spine but overall very good. Second edition one year after the first fairly uncommon just 9 locations for this and two for the first on Copac. This copy inscribed on the half-title: "To Sir Henry Rodes Green KL.C.S.I and C.B. from his old friend The Author" initialled and dated in 1874. "I have met with no work giving full insight into the duties and responsibilities of Indian Political officers a body of men who uphold British supremacy or British interests over some fifty millions of human beings and whether Residents at native Courts or under titles of Commissioner Agent or Superintendent with their respective Deputies and Assistants control with more or less of diplomacy or of direct power both kings and people" Introductory Observations. A lack that Jacob tried to make up with the present autobiographical work which represents "thinking outside the mainstream of political thought of mid-nineteenth century British India objecting to the high level of British insensitivity to native needs and interests" Riddick. The recipient of this copy Major-General Henry Green 1823-1912 was educated at Addiscombe before being commissioned in the Scinde Irregular Horse commanded by Jacob in 1846. Served throughout the Second Anglo-Sikh War present at the siege of Multan and the battle of Gujarat. During the Crimean War he was seconded to the Turkish Irregular Cavalry Balaclava Inkerman and Sebastopol severely wounded and was awarded the Order of the Medjidie for his services. Assistant Adjutant General in the Persian War 1856-7; political agent Beluchistan 1859. In 1866 he was invested as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India in recognition of his service as Political Superintendent in Upper Scinde in 1868 promoted lieutenant-colonel and subsequently in 1875 to the rank of Major-General in the Staff Corps. He saw service in the Second Anglo-Afghan War publishing an account of the battle for Kandahar The Retention of Kandahar which was published by Stanford in 1881. Neither Sweet & Maxwell nor ESTC record a folio edition of the Law Grammar before 1767. Evidently Aaron Ward the publisher of the 12mo edition of the Law Grammar also commissioned a folio version to be bound with copies of the Law-Dictionary of which he was one of eight publishers. Such a copy is held by the Yale University Library. Cowley also records a copy of the Law Grammar and Law Dictionary at Harvard which has a collective title-page and the Grammar bound before the Dictionary. Although Jacob was the author of over two dozen legal publications his law dictionary was by far the most successful. First published in 1729 it reached a tenth edition by 1782; revised editions continued to be published well into the nineteenth century. Its success according to Holdsworth was due to the fact that it combined a law dictionary with an abridgment. This fifth edition was the last to be published during Jacob's lifetime. In his preface to the Law Grammar Jacob explains that the title was inspired by Fortescue's likening the study of Latin through its grammatical elements to the study of law through its grounds and principles. The work itself is in six parts: an introduction summarizing the scope analysis and sources of law; a summary of criminal law; a selection of maxims with a summary of property law; an outline of the adjectival law describing the courts and the course of their proceedings; definitions of certain key terms or legal concepts; a short discussion of fiction intendment and presumption. . This title is unique in Jacob's prolific output because it discusses civil and canon law at length. The mention of "civilians proctors clergy and gentlemen" in the subtitle is significant. Jacob though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. Leather is mostly clean and smooth with a few light scratches on the front rubbing on the rear. Gilt trim spine decorations and spine lettering are bright. Endpapers are marbled. Inner pages are browned. Front and rear hinges show a previous repair - binders tape is present still slightly weak. This book was likely rebound in the 1800s. Jacob known more for his legal writing than his literary criticism also made an enemy of Alexander Pope and was written into Pope's "Dunciad" as one of the dunces.
