Jacob August Riis was a Danish-American social reformer "muck-raking" journalist and social documentary photographer. He contributed significantly to the cause of urban reform in the United States of America at the turn of the twentieth century by revealing the poor living conditions of the impoverished to the middle and upper classes. While living in New York Riis himself experienced poverty and became a police reporter to write about the quality of life in the slums. Illustrated throughout with 2 letters 4 pp. of manuscript on 2 leaves 9" x 6"; portrait of Riis clipped from a magazine affixed to half-title. <p>The autobiography of social reformer Jacob Riis along with two letters from Riis to influential Ellis Island immigration doctor Victor Safford. First published in 1901 this is a 1902 printing.</p> <br/> <br/> <p>Riis's autobiography begins with his youth in Denmark including his initially one-sided bond with his beloved wife Elizabeth and his many struggles and ventures after emigrating to New York as a young man. A fiercely successful immigrant Riis came to prominence in 1890 with the publication of How the Other Half Lives his exposé of life in the immigrant slums of New York illustrated with reproductions of his own photographs. His motivation to document these people and their living conditions prompted him to become a pioneer of flash photography. His numerous books and articles published on the subject of urban poverty brought him into contact and friendship with Theodore Roosevelt who also espoused his cause.</p> <br/> <br/> <p>The letters are addressed to "My Dear Doctor" identified in a pencil inscription on one letter as Dr. M. Victor Safford an Ellis Island medical doctor and officer who was a staunch practitioner of what Emmanuelle Birn calls "snapshot diagnoses" Dolmage: the routine practice of assessing the medical status of hopeful immigrants based on the smallest cues from their unwitting movements upon arrival-usually in combination with other standards associated with the officer's perception of their culture race or ethnicity. In both letters Riis is evidently responding to a series of articles written by Safford which the latter is attempting to publish. In the first letter dated April 28 1903 Riis writes: "I have read your articles with great interest and can suggest nothing to change." He continues: "Why do you not offer it to the Atlantic." and muses over the possibilities of submission and relative advantages of that paper to the Boston Herald. The second letter dated May 3 of the same year responds to Safford's apparently ongoing attempts to get the series published as such rather than allowing the articles to be separated by a paper whose audience is "engaged." Riis writes:<br/> <p style="padding-left: 2em;">Your article on the Italian in all its brevity is such a clear headed conclusion to the understanding of that kind of immigration that I hope more than ever you can persuade the Atlantic to take the whole series. They would certainly take that article but it ought all to be published.<br/> <p>Safford was deeply involved in immigration policy from the late 1800s into the 1920s when he wrote a memoir on the topic. He spearheaded the creation of the "List of Races or Peoples" in order to keep track of "people who maintain recognized communities" Smith but as a member of the Immigration Restriction League was criticized by those who wanted to track racial status only in order to foster and maintain multiculturalism.</p> <br/> <br/> <p>This volume belonged to the Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives Stephen S. A singificant association copy SIGNED by Riis on the front free endpaper and INSCRIBED to Danish-American pianist and interpreter of Scandinavian music Inga Hoegsbro Christensen before she took her married name: "Inga Hoegsbro from her friend Jacob A Riis." Laid-in are two postcards from Riis to Hoegsbro one dated in December 1913 and another whose date is unclear. The first postcard with a new year's theme reads: "A Happy New Year to you and may we both steer clear of illness in 1914. was sick nearly all summer. Let us hope it was the darkness before the dawn and that all will be O. K. with the lengthening days. Sincerely yours Jacob A. Riis." A bittersweet and foreboding note as Riis would die that following May just six months after this letter was mailed. Hoegsbro has added a note in ink on the postcard which reads "Always keep from my dear old Papa Jacob Riis. A friend in need for years." The other postcard's front depicts the St. Joseph Sanitarium & Bath House in Mt. Clemens Michigan where Riis was staying during the end of December 1913 after feeling ill for most of the autumn. The small blank area on the front of the card is entirely covered in Riis's writing and as it is in Danish and a rather difficult hand we are unable to reproduce or translate it here. On the verso next to where Riis had inked Hoegsbro's address Hoegsbro has written: "Last card from dear Papa Jacob Riis." The book's endleaves are covered in news clippings related to Riis and a few Danish poems. On the rear endpaper is a typed document written by Christensen entitled "A Tribute to Jacob Riis. Paid by Inga Hoegsbro-Christensen on the Occasion of the Golden Anniversary of the Founding of the Jacob Riis Settlement on Henry Street." Praising Riis for his help in her early career she concludes her remarks by noting: "When I begged from time to time to be allowed to repay Riis for his goodness to me his answer was always the same: Would I help some of his friends among the poor with my music I do not need to add how happy I was to be always at his service as pianist and inscructor in his settlement work." Accompanying the book and these postcards is an inscribed copy to one Frank Burton of Inga Hoegsbro Christensen's autobiography "Inga.Play." In it she mentions Riis several dozen times describing him as "Papa Jacob" the figure who helped her get settled in the United States and who introduced her to the influential New Yorkers who would help her achieve fame and success as a musician and interpreter of Scandinavian music. Altogether despite the book's regrettable condition a fantastic association copy of Riis's memoir which sheds great light on his identity as a Danish-American and a friend to struggling artists of all backgrounds. Mounted on the adjacent front flyleaf is the calling card of the recipient Mr. William W. J. Warren inscribed as follows: "Christmas 1909. -- / Mr. Riss sic called today -- / he gave me his autograph / for front cover of book." Also signed by a later owner William Duncan along top edge of front flyleaf. Warren is mentioned on p. 435 of Riis's text as W. W. J. Warren "faithful in good and in evil report" among the author's concluding acknowledgments where a second calling card stained by rust from a paper clip no long present is laid in pp. 435-440 are slightly indented from the clip and pp. 434 440 and 441 show a light rust impression. According to his obituary in American Stationer & Office Manager Vol. 88 Warren 1844-1921 was president of Stewart Warren & Co. a stationery manufacturing firm located at 129 Lafayette St. in New York a personal friend of Henry Ward Beecher and lived in the Richmond Hill section of Brooklyn as the next-door neighbor of Riis until the latter moved to Barre MA where he died in 1914. Original illustrated edition of an influential autobiography by the pioneering documentarian photographer and social reformer whose "How the Other Half Lives" was a landmark expose of living conditions in the Lower East Side tenements that led to reforms and provided Riis with an international reputation.
