An interesting work on wheel bearings for vehicles mill work blocks pendulums etc. Rowe states in his preface that his improvements stem from his understanding of the principles of bearing construction in particular that the weight carried by a bearing rather than the contact area is the limiting factor in trying to reduce the friction of a bearing. He describes the use of friction wheels supporting the main axle whose axles in turn rest on other friction wheels. This system though not widely adopted was used in Atwoods machine. - Roger Gaskill. Rowe obtained a patent on his improvements which are illustrated in five plates along with their application to a horse drawn farm cart a covered wagon and an aristocratic carriage. Enlarged edition of a famous and extensively illustrated work on the duchy of Brabant including Louvain Brussels Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch and their surroundings by the historiographer Jacob le Roy 1633-1719. This rare work contains maps plans and fine views of the castles and county seats of the nobility of Brabant including their parks and gardens as well as the main monasteries and abbeys.The engravings are excecuted by several artists such as Jacob Harrewijn 1660-1727 a student of Romeyn de Hooghe Lucas Vorsterman II 1595-1675 who worked with Peter Paul Rubens and Robert Whitehand. Amongst the castles and houses depicted are views of Bonlez Beersel Bois-Seigneur-Isaac Corroy-le-Château Vilvoorde Cleydael Berchem and many others as well as views of monasteries and cloisters such as St Michael's Abbey Corsendonck and the Groenendael Priory. Other than castles and monasteries the work also contains a large view of the city of Turnhout and a folding plate of the St. Rumbold's Tower at Mechelen.It is bound as usual with Le Roy's L'erection de toutes les terres giving extracts of letters of Charles V Phillippe II Charles II and other emperors and kings on conference about titles of barons viscounts and counts and the setting up of lands in baronies marquisates and principalities. Separately issued as a supplement of the collection of Van der Aa Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land reysen. - Jacob Janssen de Roy's book the largest single description of Borneo printed during the century which probably appeared in 1698 or 1699 for the first time is an extended apologia written to the governor-general and council at Batavia by a skipper who had lost his ship on the coast of Borneo in February 1692 as a result of the mutiny of his largely Chinese and Javanese crew. He and his shipmates barely survived hunger thirst exposure hostile natives and treachery before receiving good treatment and protection from the king of Banjarmasin in return for military assistance. Despite obtaining trading rights for the VOC Roy was outlawed for absconding with the ship's money and subsequently sailed as a free trader in the Indies visiting Borneo Sumatra and Siam. Having acquired a considerable fortune from his enterprises he was employed by the king of Siam to dispose of a certain English pirate who was visiting Siamese waters. The Roy's account includes brief descriptions of both Brunei and Sukadana although most of his description concern Banjarmasin. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Hinweisen zur Formulierung von Fragen und zur Konstruktion von Fragebögen daneben werden aber auch viele andere Probleme behandelt wie z.B. Fragen des Forschungsdesigns oder der Planung und Durchführung der Feldarbeit. Neben postalischen persönlichen und telefonischen Befragungen werden in der zweiten Auflage auch Online-Befragungen behandelt. Das Buch soll damit die Lücke zwischen allgemeinen Lehrbüchern zur empirischen Sozialforschung einerseits und speziellen Lehr- und Handbüchern zur Datenanalyse andererseits schließen. Über den Autor PD Dr. Rüdiger Jacob hat Soziologie Volkswirtschaftslehre und Politologie studiert. Er wurde 1993 mit einer medizinsoziologischen Arbeit zum Thema Laienätiologischer Krankheitsvorstellungen promoviert. 2006 hat er eine Habilitationsschrift zu theoretischen und empirischen Problemen in der Sozial- und Gesundheitsberichterstattung vorgelegt und die venia legendi für Soziologie erworben. Aktuell ist er Akademischer Direktor im Fach Soziologie an der Universität Trier im Schwerpunkt Empirische Sozialforschung und Methodenlehre. Er lehrt Methoden und Techniken der empirischen Sozialforschung Wissenschaftstheorie Medizinsoziologie und Sozialepidemiologie. Seine Forschungsgebiete sind Medizinsoziologie und Sozialepidemiologie Gesundheitsberichterstattung Gesundheitssurveys und Patientenbefragungen sowie die Versorgungsforschung. Prof. Dr. Willy H. "Born in the Rheintal in 1500 he is noted as living in Zurich in 1525 where he acquired a reputation as a "Steinschnyder." He was a physician surgeon author and preacher all combined and was well thought of by his contemporaries. Conrad Gesner refers to him as "Vir in arte sua peritissimus" most skilled in his art. Apart from his medical writings he wrote verse and several plays including a couple of comedies and a play based on the story of Wilhelm Tell.
