Inscribed by Schleiden to William Francis on the front wrapper.</p> <p>A collection of four extremely rare offprints on botanical science by Schleiden whose landmark 1838 paper "Beiträge zur Phytogenesis" marks the beginning of cell theory and plant cytology. The first offprint is on the development of organs in phanerogams plants with seeds; "his theory of the flower and fruit is an admirable performance for the time even though we abandon his view of the stalk nature of placentas and some other notions as we obviously must. As Robert Brown founded the history of the development of the ovule so Schleiden founded that of the flower and his example influenced other botanists" Von Sachs History of Botany 1530-1860. Schleiden presented these offprints to British chemist Dr. William Francis who in 1852 joined with publisher Richard Taylor to found the firm of Taylor and Francis. unknown‎

No centro duas crianças seguram o manto da mulher e um outro casal está sentado no chão do lado direito. Aos pés dos personagens corre um riacho e em fundo é visível uma luxuriante floresta com diversos tipos de árvores no lado direito e uma cadeia de montanhas no lado esquerdo.  </p>_x000d_<p>A gravura foi delineada para ilustrar a obra Histoire Générale des Voyages de Prévost provávelmente para a edição de Haia de 1755 ou Paris 1747-1748: Vol. 5: Suite du Livre Treizième et dela description des Royaumes de Congo d"Angola de Benguela et des Pays voisins. - 1748. - viii 564 p.   </p>_x000d_<p>Os Hotentotes e os Namaquas são povos que habitam a região da actual Namíbia o sul de Angola e partes do Botswana na costa ocidental de Ãfrica. São dos mais antigos povos a habitar o continente Africano e não pertencem aos povos Banto que chegaram à parte sul da Ãfrica apenas há cerca de 1000 a 500 anos. A designação própia destes povos é Cóis dedicam-se à pastorícia e as investigações genéticas mais recentes mostraram que são uma das mais antigas comunidades humanas. </p>_x000d_<p>Durante o domínio alemão da Namíbia então designada por Sudoeste Africano estes povos foram vítimas de um genocídio por parte das forças alemãs de ocupação que foi considerado o primeiro genocídio do século XX.              </p>_x000d_<p>Jacobus van der Schley Amsterdão 1715 - 1779 Desenhista e gravador holandês. Estudou com Berard Picart 1673-1733 cujo estilo o influenciou. A maioria dos seus trabalhos foram gravuras de retratos e ilustrações para livros. Entre as mais notáveis gravuras realizadas para ilustrar livros encontram-se: La Vie de Marianne por Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux 1688-1763 publicado em The Hague entre 1735 e 1747 gravou os frontispícios para a edição em 15 volumes das obras completas de Pierre de Brantôme 1540-1614: Oeuvres du seigneur de Brantôme publicadas em Haia em 1740 e em especial as notáveis gravuras para as edições de Haia de 1746 e 1755 da Histoire Générale des Voyages de Prévost.  </p>_x000d_<p>EN 225x165 cm colour engraving. They are among the oldest peoples to inhabit the African continent and do not belong to the Bantu people who arrived in the southern part of Africa only about 1000 to 500 years ago. They are called Khoekhoe they are pastoralists and the most recent genetic research has shown that they are one of the oldest human communities.</p>_x000d_<p>During the German rule of Namibia then called South West Africa these peoples were victims of genocide by the German occupying forces which was considered the first genocide of the 20th century.</p>_x000d_<p>Jacobus van der Schley Amsterdam 1715 - 1779 Dutch designer and engraver. He studied with Berard Picart 1673-1733 whose style influenced him. Most of his works were portrait prints and book illustrations.
