Marginal marks throughout with contemporary corrections to text. <BR><br> Jacob Bryant a British scholar and mythographer has been described as "the outstanding figure among the mythagogues who flourished in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries" Like many others in his time Bryant attempted to reconcile pagan mythology with the biblical account of history. He theorized that the original monotheism of the Old Testament had degenerated after the Flood into various forms of sun worship from which all the other pagan gods and heroes descended with Greek mythology arising via the Egyptians. Bryant argued that the descendants of Ham had been the most energetic but also the most rebellious peoples of the world and had given rise to the great ancient and classical civilisations. He called these people Amonians because he believed that the Egyptian god Amon was a deified form of Ham. He argued that Ham had been identified with the sun and that much of pagan European religion derived from Amonian sun worship. This work is believed to be by modern scholars one of the first works engraved by Willaim Blake through his apprenticeship to James Basire engraver though it is hard to tell which plates he engraved as all engravings were usually signed by the master. The first edition of this major work by Jacob Bryant the prominent eighteenth and nineteenth century mythographer and historian. This was Jacob Bryant's first written work in which he drew criticism on well known scholars such as Bochart Grotius Bentley and Beza. This historical and critical work comprises of three dissertations. The first deals with the tempestuous northeast wind the Euroclydon and the second the ancient city of Melite. The third dissertation to this work comprises of several chapters regarding ancient Egypt and the Shepherd Kings. Other works by Bryant include 'A New System or Analysis of Ancient Mythology' and 'Observations on the Plain of Troy'. With seven plates one folding and one in text illustration. The majority of the illustrations are maps supporting Bryant's discussions. ESTC no. T144883. The Estc notes that this edition is 'on first sight a reissue of the 1767 edition with the final errata leaf but in fact very few gatherings are reissues of that 1767 edition; distinguishing marks of this edition are: the titlepage gathering is a re impression with one leaf more the unsigned errata leaf following p. iii; the press figure on p. 7 is 2; p. 62 has no press figure and p. 63 has the press figure: 3. ' Collated complete. A fascinating and important eighteenth century text. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally very smart. Patches of light rubbing to the extremities and joints. Front hinge is strained but firm. Plate IV is untrimmed and therefore has overshot the fore edge. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots.
