Fächern studierte A. die Rechte bei Ulrich Zasius in Freiburg i.Br. und bei Andreas Alciatus in Avignon wo er 1525 promovierte. 1524 an die Univ. Basel berufen unterrichtete A. 1525-30 die Institutionen danach bis 1536 das gesamte röm. Recht. Von 1536 bis zu seinem Rücktritt 1548 teilte er den Unterricht wieder mit anderen Kollegen. A. war die treibende Kraft bei der Wiedereröffnung der Univ. Basel nach der Krise der Reformation fünfmal Rektor und Stifter eines Lehrstuhls für Aristotel. Ethik. Dem Basler Druckergewerbe besorgte er viele Aufträge von auswärts. Erasmus von Rotterdam war er v.a. in der gemeinsamen krit.-konziliaren Haltung gegenüber den radikaleren luth. und zwinglian. Positionen verbunden. Er genoss auch nach Erasmus' Übersiedlung nach Freiburg i.Br. dessen volles Vertrauen und konnte ihn 1535 zur Rückkehr nach Basel bewegen. A. gehörte nicht zu den Förderern der 1529 in Basel eingeführten Reformation er hat diese vielmehr passiv erlitten hielt an der alten Transsubstantiationslehre fest und nahm nicht am Abendmahl teil. Deshalb kam er mit weiteren Gleichgesinnten mit dem Basler Rat in Konflikt musste aber dank seiner Stellung nicht emigrieren. Wie Erasmus brachte A. aus Ablehnung jeglicher utop. Vorwegnahmen auf Erden wenig Verständnis auf für die sozialen Kämpfe im Umfeld der Reformation lehnte aber die harte Haltung gegenüber den Täufern und den rebellierenden Bauern ab. In der Frage der Bekenntnisse neigte er der zwischen Lutherischen und Zwinglianern vermittelnden Linie Martin Bucers zu. Dieser gewann ihn schliessl. ganz für die Reformation und 1534 für die Teilnahme am Abendmahl. A. war Gutachter und Delegierter bei der Synode von 1533 in Strassburg und beim Kolloquium von 1540-41 in Worms D 1535 Stadtsyndikus daneben Rechtsberater von Städten und dt. Fürsten. Als Verwalter der Erasmus-Stiftung wurde A. nach 1536 zum Protektor vieler Studenten und auswärtiger Gelehrter. Den Künsten zugetan liess er sich 1519 von Hans Holbein d.J. porträtieren. Obwohl er nicht durch Publikationen hervortrat ist er durch den A.-Nachlass eine der bestdokumentierten Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit. Die Bücher und Kunstgegenstände in seinem Haus Zum Kaiserstuhl an der Kleinbasler Rheingasse bilden zusammen mit dem Nachlass des Erasmus dessen persönl. Erbe A. war den Grundstock des sog. A.-Kabinetts das sein Sohn Basilius als eigentl. Sammlung begründet hat und das nach dem Aussterben der Fam. und längerem Nachspiel 1662 von der Stadt und Univ.
