Ohne den Schutzumschlag, sonst gutes Exemplar. - »Stehen wir etwa allein? Soweit ich hier im Lande sehen kann, sind alle redlichen Menschen . . . unserer Meinung zugetan.« Diese optimistischen Äußerungen Wilhelm Grimms aus dem Frühjahr 1838 nach seiner Entlassung in Göttingen sollten sich bald als trügerisch herausstellen. Ein Jahr später muß er erkennen, »daß man unseren kleinen Nachen, wo er landen wollte, zurückstieß«. Zwar gab es überall in Deutschland Sympathiebekundungen, aber die Regierenden konnten sich nirgends zu einer Einstellung der entlassenen Hochschullehrer entschließen. Besonders reserviert waren die Berliner Freunde der Brüder Grimm. Sie wußten, daß der preußische König seinen Schwager in Hannover nicht brüskieren wollte, und verhielten sich abwartend opportunistisch. Allein die romantische Schriftstellerin Bettine von Arnim kämpfte mit allen ihr zu Gebote stehenden Mitteln, um eine Rehabilitierung der Märchen-Herausgeber zu erreichen. Sie legte sich mit den bedeutendsten geistigen Köpfen in Berlin an und versuchte, Humboldt, Savigny, Ranke, Lachmann u. a. zu Stellungnahmen zu bewegen. Als sie erkannt hatte, daß selbst ihr Schwager, der einflußreiche Jurist Savigny, ihren phantasievoll geführten Kampf nicht unterstützte, wandte sie sich an den preußischen Kronprinzen. Er ließ sich sofort für die nationale Aufgabe gewinnen, und eine seiner ersten Amtshandlungen nach der Regierungsübernahme 1840 war die Berufung der Brüder Grimm nach Berlin (nach selbstgewählten Konditionen). Es versucht, aus der Vergegenwärtigung seiner Arbeit Möglichkeiten der Selbstverständigung für die Philologie heute zu gewinnen. Dabei wird nicht der politische Gehalt oder irgendein Praxisbezug von Grimms Wissenschaft gesucht, sondern deren Logik rekonstruiert. Der Zusammenhang von Literaturgeschichte, Grammatik, Sprachgeschichte, Mythologie, Rechtsgeschichte und Lexikographie läßt die beiden Themen hervortreten, die die Philologie Jacob Grimms regieren: Vorgeschichte und Heimat. -- Wyss trägt zunächst die Schichten der Tradition des Grimm-Bildes der Germanistik ab; er zeigt dann, daß Grimms Neuansatz sich nicht mit dem Rückgriff auf die Wissenschaft seines Lehrers Savigny erklären läßt. In einem dritten Kapitel wird Grimms Sprachauffassung in den Zusammenhang der beginnenden historischen Linguistik gerückt und gezeigt, wie die spezifischen Fragestellungen Grimms sich herausbilden. Il volume prende in visione le idee guida del Romanticismo per incontrare le personalità di Jacob e Wilhelm Grimm, Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Tieck e Wolfgang Goethe, uniti dal medesimo interesse per il fiabesco esemplarmente testimoniato nella raccolta dei racconti popolari, quale forma di poesia. Un'ampia sezione è dedicata alla "Forma Fiaba" europea e al pensiero poetante partendo, dall'ampia riflessione filologica di M. Heidegger e dagli studi di Max Lüthi, e si conclude con la psicanalisi, nell'intento di salvaguardare l'essenza del fiabico. br. A differenza delle numerose illustrazioni della morte apparente di Biancaneve nella bara di cristallo, del sonno centenario della bella addormentata, quali immagini ci vengono in mente per la scena di Cappuccetto Rosso nella pancia del lupo? Le tre fiabe grimmiane ci consegnano dapprima la presenza di due assenze - morte apparente, sonno - e poi il buio, l'assenza di un'assenza: ognuna di esse avviene come dall'interno di una immaginaria crisalide, un rifugio intimo e protetto, che consente un passaggio alla successiva fase di sviluppo. Preceduto dai luoghi preparatori della casa e del bosco, in cui liberarsi della vecchia identità e rinascere come donne nuove, è nello spazio aprospettico della fiaba, riflesso di antichi riti di passaggio, che le metamorfosi fisiche ed esistenziali si compiono nei pressi di luoghi liminali tra vita e morte, essere umano e mondo, habitus e habitat, cultura e ambiente, finitezza costitutiva dell'essere umano e il necessario ampliarsi verso spazi originari.

Viviamo nella civiltà delle immagini, e i nostri sensi vengono quotidianamente sottoposti a un bombardamento di figure la cui potenza di fuoco non ha mai avuto pari nella storia del genere umano. I tradizionali modelli interpretativi, incentrati sulla parola e sul discorso, sono insufficienti a renderne conto in modo adeguato. Oggi le ricerche che si raccolgono sotto il titolo di "cultura visuale" sono chiamate a rispondere a questa sfida: non per affermare un ingenuo primato dell'immagine sulla parola, ma per indagare parola e immagine nella loro azione reciproca, e nei loro condizionamenti storici. Jacob Burckhardt ha precocemente intuito questa costellazione di problemi: storico della cultura e storico dell'arte, ha insegnato a generazioni di europei che il vedere non si dà nella sua immediata naturalità, ma si forma nella storicità della percezione. With the first state of the engraved title page of Volume I without the umlaut in the word Marchen "later issues of the first edition of Volume I had the umlauts inserted"-- Quayle 38. Vol. II with the half-title and advertisements. Small octavo bound in full scarlet crushed morocco by Riviere & Sons with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands triple gilt ruling to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles all edges gilt illustrated with with two engraved title pages and 20 full-page etchings by George Cruikshank. German Popular Stories was Cruikshank's first illustrated book. Following the success of this work he illustrated the works of his friend Charles Dickens. Translated by Edgar Taylor. From the library of banker and rare book collector Frederick Stanhope Peck with his bookplate to the pastedown. Laid in is an original bill of sale from Parke-Bernet Galleries dated April 21-22nd 1947. In fine condition. An exceptional example with noted provenance as these have been in a private collection since the 1940s. As early as 1805 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm began collecting German popular tales. They published the first and second volumes of Kinder-und Hausmarchen in 1812 and 1814. Its publication brought immediate and worldwide fame to the brothers Grimm and provided the foundation for their influential and groundbreaking studies in German philology and grammar PMM 281. The 1823 edition in English of German Popular Stories was the "first anywhere to be fully illustrated" as well as the first to truly target children Darton 216. Moreover the English translation by Edgar Taylor and his relatives "revolutionized the conventional English attitude to fairy tales and rehabilitated fantasy as generally acceptable reading-matter for the young. The Cruikshank illustrations which the Grimms themselves admired remain inextricably associated with the tales" and are considered among his best works Carpenter & Prichard 230. They have been called "the first real kindly agreeable and infinitely amusing and charming illustrations for a child's book in England" Charles Welsh. Tibbets Jr. radio operator Richard H. Nelson and First Lieutenant Jacob Beser. In fine condition. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 14.25 inches by 12.5 inches. Named after Enola Gay Tibbets the mother of pilot and aircraft commander Colonel Paul Tibbets the Enola Gay became the first aircraft to drop an atomic weapon with the release of "Little Boy" on the city of Hiroshima on August 6th 1945. The bomb resulted in the near complete destruction of the city causing an estimated 160000 immediate civilian casualties and thousands of subsequent deaths associated with radiation starvation and dehydration. unknown books
