It was very popular partly through the inserted poems by Jacob Cats and its illustrations. The three main parts contain a general survey of the several elements of medicine varying from medical folklore and herbal knowledge to anatomy and chirurgy. At the end of the third part "Heel-konste" letters from and to Van Beverwijck as well as some other important letters are issued. Among these are letters of Descartes on the motion of the hart written ca. 1637-1643 to and from Anna Maria van Schurman ca. 1640 and William Harvey. Van Beverwijck was a very well-read man and all his writings include many references to ancient and contemporary authors on the subject. With owners' inscriptions on flyleaf and some modern underscoring and annotations in pencil. Rare large engraved map by Hendrik de Leth after Jacob de Hoorn of the new dike east of Muiden in the Netherlands. It was most likely commissioned by the Hoogheemraadschap van de Zeedijk beoosten Muiden. In 1732 it turned out the wood used for the dike was damaged by sea worms which led to a renovation of the dike during the years 1735-1737.Slightly creased and margins somewhat frayed second sheet with a few stains and some marginal tears restored at the back. This collected edition contains all his most famous works including Sinne- en minnebeelden Self-stryt all six parts of Houwelick all three parts of Trou-ringh and many others. Cats's poetry lent itself to illustration and the illustrations form an integral part of his emblematic works. He must have worked closely with Adriaan van de Venne one of the best artists of his day who executed the drawings for most of the hundreds of engravings in this edition and they were produced by the best engravers of his day. One of the double-page plates shows the famous representation of marriage in the form of a fisherman's trap. The posthumous Slaapeloose nachten and Twee-en-tachtig jarig leven first appeared without illustrations in the sixth edition of 1700 and are here illustrated with 12 engravings after Jan Goeree first made for the seventh edition of 1712.Internally in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities and parts of the spine cracked but with the tooling on the spine still very clear. Rüff's work is an improved version of Rosslin's Der Swangern frawen and contained the first true anatomical pictures in an obstetrics book.It was originally published in 1554 as Ein schön lustig Trostbüchli von den empfengknussen und geburten der Menschen translated into Latin in the same year as De conceptu et generatione hominis . insuper. The first of the many Dutch editions appeared in 1591 all early editions are very rare. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617 is added at the end pp. 117-172 with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire an alternative route to the Pacific. Rich in ethnographic detail the numerous illustrations in the Miroir include oversized penguins llamas and an Andean condor with a nine-foot wing span. Alpini 1553-1617 was an Italian physician and botanist who spent three years in Egypt studying botany and hygiene as a companion to the Venetian Consul Giorgio Emo. This work is considered "one of the earliest European studies of non-western medicine. Alpini's work dealt primarily with contemporary i.e. Arabic practices observed during his sojourn in Egypt. These included moxibustion - the production of counter-irritation by placing burning or heated material on the skin - which Alpini introduced into European medicine . Alpini also mentioned coffee for the first time in this work" Norman. Jacobus Bontius Jacques de Bondt 1592-1631 whose work on Indian medicine is included was a Dutch physician and botanist. He travelled to Persia and Indonesia to study the botany of the area. He was the first to study cholera on the island of Batavia in 1689 before it was known in Europe and died on Java. His botanic and medical works were published after his death by Pisonius. He "was probably the first to regard tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science. He spent the last four years of his life in the Dutch East Indies and his book incorporates the experience he gained there. It includes locks sluices bridges pumps pile drivers an ice-breaker an elaborate water-bailing mill and more. Most of the plates measure about 45 x 54 cm with the folding ones about 52 x 76 cm. At least most of the plates depict existing works and the text occasionally gives some historical information. The drawings are so detailed and give such a clear picture of how the mechanisms functioned that one could use them to reconstruct the works shown.A fine copy nearly untrimmed with only some false folds in the half-title and an occasional minor defect in the paper. Plate 23 in volume 1 has no number but it may have been trimmed off at the head. The inside front hinge has partly separated from the book-block but the binding is otherwise good.
