Le Maire's discoveries showed for the first time that Tierra del Fuego was an island and advanced our topographic knowledge on many other matters. The three works together include 19 maps and give the most detailed and up-to-date information then available about the topography of the Americas and parts of New Guinea the East Indies and the Pacific islands. It also contains the first two maps to show the Baja peninsula and southern California as an island an error that was copied for more than a century. These two new maps also show the non-existent northwest passage. Maps A-C Tierra del Fuego the South Pacific and the coast of New Guinea include the route of Le Maire's voyage. The map of the Americas with parts of the coasts of China and West Africa includes the meridians that divided the world between Spain and Portugal according to the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas .With the bookplate of the great Dutch book collector Isaac Meulman 1807-1868 and several owners' inscriptions. 175 pp.Scarce first Latin edition in the same year as the first edition in the original Dutch of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen the veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617 is added at the end with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire an alternative route to the Pacific. In 1614 the VOC commissioned Spilbergen to sail to the Moluccas with nearly 700 men. Despite the commercial nature of his expedition Spilbergen's six vessels were heavily armed anticipating encounters with silver-laden Spanish vessels. Spilbergen spent two years calling at various Spanish and Portuguese ports along both coasts of South America failing to capture any great amounts of silver or silk from Manila but burning several settlements and emerging triumphant from a naval skirmish just south of Lima.By contrast Le Maire's less mercenary expedition resulted in important discoveries; his exploration of Tierra del Fuego and the Tuamotou Archipelago called into doubt the existence of a massive southern continent until its existance was proved in the 19th century providing a catalyst for Tasman's discovery of New Zealand and Australia. The two expeditions crossed paths in the Dutch East Indies in 1616.Spilbergen's book is also remarkable as an early document of Dutch voyages to the Brazilian coast especially valuable for its detailed account of the stay in the Ilha Grande from October 1614 to January 1615 and in São Vicente in 1615. Slight browning throughout with the title-page and its conjugate cut down and the margins expertly restored along with the gutter margin of worm holes repaired in 7 plates and 4 leaves of text slightly affecting the printed image in 3 plates. Binding worn and rebacked with some minor stains.l Borba de Moraes pp. 826-827; Landwehr & V.d. 16 667 27 2 blank pp.17th-century edition of a so called "book of secrets" compiled by de Swiss physician Johannes Jacob Wecker 1528-1586. The book opens with a dedicatory letter followed by an extensive list of authors. The main work is as the title suggests divided into 17 "books" each devoted more or less to a different subject. Books of secrets were very popular among common people in the 16th and 17th century however this one by Wecker is said to have been owned by most of the professional physicians as well. The work is not simply a pharmacopoeia though it does include many medical recipes for specific ailments for example to cure tooth-ache coughing and bruises. It also includes more practical everyday "secrets" on how to prevent trees from breaking or how to get rid of aphids on the wall and cosmetic recipes. These recipes are complemented by more occult passages on how to light a candle underwater or how to change the white in children's eyes to black.l Krivatsy 12627; VD17 23:295006H; cf. The collection can be divided into 2 general parts: the first with engraved scenes of the siege of Vienna after Romeyn de Hooghe and the second with nearly a hundred views of the involved cities. Very large engraved plan showing the extraordinary cartographic mosaic floor of the Burgerzaal of the Amsterdam City Hall designed by Jacob van Campen with a celestial map in the centre and the magnificent map of the world in 2 hemispheres on either side. The engraving was first published in 1661 and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th-century. This engraved representation is all that is left of this cartographical work of art. Wear caused by people walking on the mosaic meant it had to be restored about a hundred years later. When in turn this restoration was damaged the two hemispheres were filled in with plain marble slabs without pictorial representation. The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also of course show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Slightly wrinkled in the right margin one fold reinforced and a few tiny spots otherwise in very good condition.l Cf.
