Simple but rather appealing collection of poems by this New York lawyer "inspired by the Negro's Fight for Democratic Rights" as well as by experiences during World War II where men of every color fought in the Armed Forces. Although the foreword by Hall Johnson refers to Goell as having been born "with a silver spoon" these poems show his sincerity and his close identification with those suffering discrimination - for example one long poem begins "I am a Negro - thirteen million strong." A preface by German orientalist Jacob Rhenferd 1654�1712 professor at Franeker the Netherlands' second oldest university until it was disbanded by Napoleon in 1811 outlines both the major tenets of his argument and the opposing arguments by Johannes Cocceius Thomas Gataker and others who identified Hebraisms.<br> This is in Latin Greek and Hebrew with sidenotes scattered woodcut initials and a few woodcut tailpieces; an engraved allegorical vignette signed J.G. graces the title-page. <br> <br> For the history of printed treatises on this subject at Franeker see: L. Early eighteenth century edition based on the imprint of the Dutch poet and politician's rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity first published in Dordrecht in 1637. 16mo: 44 673 3pp with an engraved title page in addition to the letterpress title to the first work two engraved full-page portraits one of Anna Maria Schurmans and one of Jacob Cats and a full-page allegorical engraving 'Het Derde Deel' in addition to 51 half-page engravings in the text. Contemporary vellum with 'J. Cats' in manuscript to the spine. The binding is soiled but sound the pages and plates clean but with occasional browning finger-soiling and mild staining. Marginal loss to S3 affecting neither the text nor the plate on p. 234. Contemporary ownership inscriptions to both fly leaves. Cats was one of the distinguished Dutch writers of Holland's golden age but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still for nearly two centuries he enjoyed enormous popularity. In this perhaps his most important work Cats treats human behavior and society in all its aspects through the lens of marriage both human and spiritual the marriage of Christ and His Church. Examples are taken from the Bible Adam and Eve David and Abigail and from classical and modern authors Cyrus and Aspasia Marc Anthony and Cleopatra. Also included are discussions of marriage after rape the breaking of marriage bonds adultery and the like. Also known as Caspari Jacobi Christiani Reuvens Gaspard Jacob Chrétien Reuvens Casparus Jacobus Christianus Reuvens and Kaspar Jakob Christian Reuvens. Studied law and classics in Amsterdam and Leiden but became interested in archaeology during a stay in Paris. He was appointed first director of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and first professor of archaeology in the Netherlands Leiden University 1818-1835. It was Reuvens who transformed the mediocre archaeological cabinet of Leiden University to the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Backed by King William I he acquired the successive collections of De Lescluze Cimba and Anastasi as well as numerous classical collections. Among his books are "Epimetrum de quibusdam monumentis cum Pollionis historia conjunctis" 1820; and "Periculum animadversionum archaeologicarum ad cippos Punicos Humbertianos Musei Antiquarii Lugduno-Batavi" 1822. Antoine-Jean Letronne 1787-1848 was a French archaeologist director of the Ecole des Chartes and inspector-general of the University of France. Plus 118 numbered copperplates 114 of which depict numerous impressions of coins the last four are pictorial allegorical schematic or technical. Engraved device to title. Woodcut initials head- and tail-pieces. A list of typographical errors and note to the binder. Hardcover handsomely bound in recent half shagreen and marbled boards new endpapers spine with false raised bands old crimson morocco label in gilt laid down a chipped lower blank corner to a leaf or two. Overall in fine condition. An excellent copy superb strikes of the plates. ~ First edition. Collated in accordance with the British Library copy. Jacob Oisel 1631-1686. ~ Provenance: Felix Béthune 1857-1901 with his heraldic bookplate bearing the Coat-of-Arms of the Béthune family. It incorporates a shield with 3 stars a knight's helmet and a Baron's crown decorated with 7 pearls. Held by two lions the shield is surrounded by a circular motto "nec auro nec armis" "not with gold not by weapons". Felix Béthune was a member of the National Congress of Belgium Mayor of the city of Courtrai Kortrijk and a Senator. In 1845 he received a knighthood from King Leopold and in 1855 he became a Baron. Hardcover bound in contemporary quarter goat skin dyed and glazed and marbled boards spine with 5 raised bands; paper on boards rubbed corner-tips bit worn. In a very good external condition and in fine internal condition. A wide-margined copy untrimmed. Exceptionally bright interior; crisp plates. ~ The first and only enlarged edition of this work. Beautifully illustrated this edition has an extended number of plates with a total of 912 coin impressions on 76 copperplates; 2 engraved frontispieces one engraved bust portrait and a remarkable suite of 13 exquisite equestrian emperor portraits engraved by C. de Passe after Johannes Stradanus Jan van der Straeten 1523-1605. The work went through several editions was first printed in Antwerp in 1615 and 1627 Beller; later in Berlin in 1705 Rüdiger. In 1738 publisher Martin Schagen got the publishing rights and issued the present copy. He could now reset the entire work and print it in elegant quarto format add the Johannes Stradanus suite of portraits extra suite of coin illustrations and allow the plates the freedom to remain bound separately from the text. The edition was printed on handsome laid paper with ample margins and the strikes of the plates are remarkably more beautiful than these of their predecessors. With the Appendix: Papyrus bilingue et livre magique postérieurement reçus. Caspar Jacob Christiaan Reuvens 1793-1835 Dutch Egyptologist. Also known as Caspari Jacobi Christiani Reuvens Gaspard Jacob Chrétien Reuvens Casparus Jacobus Christianus Reuvens and Kaspar Jakob Christian Reuvens. Studied law and classics in Amsterdam and Leiden but became interested in archaeology during a stay in Paris. He was appointed first director of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and first professor of archaeology in the Netherlands Leiden University 1818-1835. It was Reuvens who transformed the mediocre archaeological cabinet of Leiden University to the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Backed by King William I he acquired the successive collections of De Lescluze Cimba and Anastasi as well as numerous classical collections. Among his books are "Epimetrum de quibusdam monumentis cum Pollionis historia conjunctis" 1820; and "Periculum animadversionum archaeologicarum ad cippos Punicos Humbertianos Musei Antiquarii Lugduno-Batavi" 1822. Antoine-Jean Letronne 1787-1848 was a French archaeologist director of the Ecole des Chartes and inspector-general of the University of France. In 1831 he became professor of history in the College de France a chair he exchanged in 1838 for that of archaeology. In 1840 he became the keeper of the national archives. Scarce.
