It was perhaps the most important work then produced on dikes, sluices, dams, weirs, canals and swing-bridges, the very elements of existence in Holland. Jan Schenck was the engraver of this work, which may also be the most accurate and the most sumptuously illustrated book of its type in Holland in the 18th century - the technical aspects of the rendering was just superb."" - Brunet V,1082 - Graesse VII, 258.‎

‎Berlin, Fred. Dümmler's, 1850. 4to. In contemporary marbled paper covered boards. Spine loose and light wear to extremties, internally fine and clean. 86 pp.‎

‎First edition of Grimm's important work which he considered one of the very earliest to introduce cremation to the modern western world. Here Grimm traces cremation through the history of Western civilization and illustrated its aesthetic and ennobling benefits with a host of examples from various cultures, which to him, represented ""stages in the refinement of humankind"". ""While he described cremation as ""progress in the mental education of the people"". He dedicated the bulk of his speech to funerary rituals among ancient Greeks and Romans, whom he revered. Grimm focused on ethnological descriptions of cremation practices, but he also mentioned practical advantages, like improvising hygiene, saving space, and making the transport of remains easier. To preempt potential objections about the Christian belief in resurrection, he assured his audience that the physical product of incineration and decomposition were identical."" (Ameskamp, On Fire - Cremation in Germany).Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (1785 - 1863), German philologist, jurist and mythologist. He is best known as the discoverer of Grimm's Law, the author of the monumental Deutsches Wörterbuch, his Deutsche Mythologie and more popularly, as one of the Brothers Grimm, as the editor of Grimm's Fairy Tales‎

‎FRIES, JACOB FRIEDRICH.‎

‎Neue Kritik der Vernunft. 3 vols. - [SEMINAL EARLY WORK ON “EMPIRICAL PSYCHOLOGY”]‎

‎Heidelberg, Muhr und Zimmer, 1807. 8vo. Uniformly bound in three recent card-board bindings with gilt lettering to spine. Spines with sunning. Ex-libris (Philosopher Carl Henrik Koch) pasted on to pasted down front front end-paper. Verso and recto of front and back free end-paper in vol. 1 closely annotated in contemporary hand. With light occassional brownspotting throughout, a nice set.(2), L, 347 pp. 327 pp." 392 pp.‎

‎The very rare first edition of Fries seminal work on psychology. “In his earliest writings, Fries generally referred to the science of psychology as “empirical psychology”. However, by 1807, in Neue Kritik der Vernunft, he preferred to call his own psychology “philosophical anthropology” and in 1820, under the influence of G. E. Schulze, he changed the title of his psychology to “psychic anthropology”. In the second edition of Neue Kritik der Vernunft (1828-31), in which he again used the title of “psychic anthropology”, Fries explained why he had avoided the use of the term “psychology”: “Although this science is usually called psychology we will deviate from this terminology for several reasons. The word «psyche» (or soul) has been used in philosophy to designat the metaphysical, persisting, simple, and immortal essence of the spirit, and its use therefore''implies certain assumptions which we cannot now entertain. We are only concerned with developing a doctrine of the nature of the human soul based upon ""inner experience”. Thus we will deal only with inner anthropology. In thus narrowing our scope to the human spirit, we arrive at the topic of empirical psychology, or psychic anthropology. But our present task differs from empirical psychology, which is an experimental physics of inner life (eine innere Experimentalphysik) which remains forever fragmentary. We will not be satisfied with such a science. We want to achieve a [unified theory of inner life, a doctrine of inner nature, which will provide for [the study of] our inner psychic nature what 'the philosophy of nature now provides for physics. This part of psychic anthropology we want to call philosophical anthropology (From the introduction to Vol. 1, p. 36). “Thus, Fries called his psychology “psychic anthropology” both to avoid the metaphysical assumptions of the old rational psychology and to indicate his dissatisfaction with the current « fragmentary » and mechanical empirical psychology. On the first account, in rejecting the old metaphysics of the soul, Fries accepted Kant's critique of rational psychology" on the second, in rejecting the merely empirical status of psychology, he disagreed with Kant's evaluation of the limited epistemological possibilities of psychology. Instead he maintained that psychology need not be “merely empirical”, that it can attain the true status of a science, and, in other words, that its phenomena can be rationally organized according to metaphysical criteria. Kant (1786 trans., 1970) had denied this possibility, claiming that the metaphysical principles of natural science were not applicable to psychology. Fries agreed that the principles which Kant referred to as “the metaphysical principles of natural science” could not be used in psychology, but he pointed out that these principles were really « metaphysical principles of outer nature », not natural science per se, and that another set of metaphysical criteria was possible.” (Leary, T he Psychology of Jakob Friedrich Fries (1773-1843): Its Context, Nature, and Historical Significance, p. 231)‎

‎Conspectus et aestimatio ethicae Corani. Adjecto animadversionum philologicarum in Arabicos scriptores specimine. - [DAMPE'S DISSERTATION]‎

‎Hafnia, Schultz, 1812. 4to. In contemporary blank green boards. Light wear to extremities. Internally nice and clean, printed on heavy blue paper. (4), 62, (2) pp.‎

‎Exceedingly rare first edition, possibly gift-copy, of Dampe's doctoral dissertation on ethics in the Koran. Dampe was subject to arguable the most profound miscarriage of justice in Danish history. In 1820, Dampe was sentenced to death for advocating the abolition of absolute monarchy and the establishment of a free constitution. However, his sentence was commuted to exile and he was imprisoned in ""the Balloon"" on the tiny island of Fredriksø. Following the abolition of exile as a form of punishment in 1840 he was placed under house arrest on Bornholm. In 1848, he was granted amnesty by Denmark's new king, Frederick VII. The following year, in 1849, the Danish Constitution was introduced pretty much the way Dampe had proposed. His dissertation provides an overview of the main principles of the Quran’s ethical teachings, the arguments for following them, pre-Islamic Arab ethics before Muhammad, and what Muhammad thought about himself. Then follows an excursus on Muhammad’s clever ways of granting himself authority and finally, an appendix with ten pages of philological commentary. Biblioteca Danica I, 596.‎

‎"RIETER, JACOB og JOHANNES SENN.‎

‎Danske Nationale Klædedragter - Dänische National Kleidertrachten. - [THE FIRST DANISH WORK ON NATIONAL COSTUMES]‎

‎(København, ca. 1805-08). 4to. Near contemporary (ca. 1850) full brown calf with richly gilt spine and blindstamped border to boards. Spine worn and capitals lacking a bit of leather. Front hinge cracked, strengthened from verso. Internally very nice and fresh with only occasional brownspotting. With the book-plate of John Arden to inside of front board. Bound with the original wrappers for the fourth and ninth series. The front wrapper for the ninth has the title written in English in contemporary hand to the top right (slightly cropped), in ink that seems identical to the ""9"" denoting the series number. 57 (out of in all 72 published) engraved an excellently hand-coloured plates of costumes, one present in two copies (plate nr. 67). All plates with Danish and German text in the plate. Apart from two leaves that are slightly smaller, the leaves measure 25,5x19 cm. The print surface on all measures 20,5 x 14 cm.‎

‎An unusually large collection of 57 of the rare plates that constitute the first Danish work on national costumes. The work is of the utmost scarcity, with only one known complete copy in public institutions (Danish University Library - the copy in the Royal Library is also incomplete). The title is known solely from the wrappers that each series of six plates was issued with. These wrappers are also exceedingly scarce and almost never present. Our copy contains two of them. As always, the issue number has been added in hand. Rieter and Senn were both born and educated in Switzerland and both arrived in Copenhagen in 1804. They studied costumes on Sealand, the West Sea Islands, and Holsten. The series of costumes is divided into two sections, the first depicting those of Copenhagen (along with Amager) and Sealand, the other that of Southern Jutland, including Holsten and the North Friesian Islands. Rieter left Copenhagen already in 1805, and Senn was left to complete the publication. It is assumed that Senn did most of the drawings. Only very few complete copies of the work are known to exist, only one in public collections. Colas states that “I do not know the exact number of plates to have been published in this collection, which is very rare. The copy of Lipperheide contains 56 plates, and that of the University of Copenhagen has 72.” (Own translation from French). Lipperheide 1045 (56 plates)" Bibl. Danica II: 1080 (incomplete) Colas: 2557 Krohn: 873-944.‎
