The very good Rothamsted copy> with small ink stamp on pastedown. First collected edition and the first appearance in print of two of the three items. William Jacob 1762-1851 a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1807 was appointed comptroller of corn returns in 1822. 'He was commissioned by the Government in 1825 and 1827 to report on the condition of agriculture in some of the states of northern Europe; the results of his observations are contained in two Reports> which contain valuable information and very full statistics of the state of land and the agricultural produce of those countries at that period' Palgrave II 471. The present work prefaced with a call for freer trade in grain contains three items: Jacob's second report to the Board of Trade with the original statistical appendix and notes written specially for this edition; 'Notices respecting the commerce of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azoff; more especially as regards the Trade in Wheat'> with an appendix 'written a year ago and read in manuscript within a small circle' which he was prompted to publish by the new edition of Sismondi's Nouveaux Principes d'Economie politique> which Jacob felt needed correction on certain points preface; and finally 'Observations on the Benefits arising from the Cultivation of Poor Soils by the application of Pauper Labour; as exemplified in the colonies for the Indigent and Orphans in Holland'> intended to inspire similar experiments in England.
