‎BEHRENS Karl Friedrich b. 1701 Jacob ROGGEVEEN 1659 1729‎

‎Histoire de l'Expedition de Trois Vaisseaux aux Terres Australes en MCCCXXI‎

‎The Hague: Depens de la Compagne 1739. 2 volumes 12mo. Titles printed in red and black. 12 224; 4 254pp. Half titles. Later full polished calf spine gilt with raised bands marbled endpapers. In a modern slipcase.

First French edition of Behren's account of Jacob Roggeveen's 1721-22 Pacific voyage.

The first French edition of Behren's German account of Jacob Roggeveen's 1721-22 Pacific voyage which provided important impetus for further exploration for the great Southern Continent. The author was a sergeant and commander of marines on the voyage. Contemporary accounts of Roggeveen's explorations were first published in Dutch in 1728 and in German beginning in 1735. This French translation was based on the Frankfurt and Leipzig editions of 1737. Behrens' scarce narrative tells the story of one of the most significant of the Dutch voyages ranking with those of Le Maire Schouten and Tasman. Roggeveen set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time. "Roggewein's is the first certified account of contact with Easter Island and its great stone images as well as the last of the great Dutch circumnavigations" Cox. "Though some attribute the translation to Charles de Brosses Chareles Pierre Claret Fleurieu believed that the style of language revealed the efforts of a non-native speaker. With the text often more a paraphrasing of the German version than a direct translation Fleurieu and others credit Behrens himself with the translation" Hill.

European Americana 739/21; Sabin 4379; Hill 99; Cox I p.51; Borba de Moraes p.95; Howgego R63. ‎BAEGERT Jacob 1717 1772‎

‎Nachrichten von der Americanischen Halbinsel Californien‎

‎Mannheim: Churfurstl. Hof-und Academie-Buchdruckerey 1773. 12mo. 16 358pp. Two engraved plates folding map. Contemporary patterned paper boards expertly rebacked and recornered to style preserving original leather label.

Rare early account of Lower California by a German Jesuit.

Second issue with some corrections after the first printing of the previous year. Baegert lived in Baja California for a period of seventeen years 1751-68 and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California including the Pericues Guiacuras and Cochiemes. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: ".it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians the soil was poor the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by the fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768 after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The top right corner of the territory present day Arizona is labeled rather ominously "Los Apaches Barbari." The excellent plates which were apparently not issued with all copies depict male and female California Indians. The NUC locates only three copies of this second issue. A prime early account of Baja California with an important map and plates of the region.

Howes B29; Hill p.12; Cowan p.27; Sabin 4363; Bell B5; Streeter Sale 2442; Barrett 129; Wagner Spanish Southwest 157; Meadows Baja California 1; Graff 137; Pilling Proof Sheets 203. ‎SPEECHES OF MESSRS. S.S. COX AND JACOB REINHARD ON THE FLAG PRESENTATION TO THE DEMOCRACY OF THE FIFTH WARD OF COLUMBUS MADE NOVEMBER 26 1859‎

‎Columbus Ohio 1859. Caption title as issued. 16pp untrimmed. Margin-foxing Good.

The occasion was a celebration of German Democrats "whose thrifty and pleasant homes are mostly in the Fifth Ward." In this scarce pamphlet Cox lauds the German opposition to tyranny their love of "Constitutional government and law;" and their distrust of anarchy and disorder expressed in those annoying "Woman Rights Free Love and Abolition Conventions." Most recently such destructive "egotistical faith" has shown itself in the John Brown Invasion and in the doctrines of the Republican Party. "When Brown shoots down the citizens at the Armory he appeals to the God of the oppressed as his judge and all the Ismatics of New England and Ohio applaud the murderer as a martyr." And when Republicans deny the right of territories to decide whether to permit slavery "they deny to majorities the right to rule."
OCLC 34559434 3- OH Hist. Soc. U TX Hist. Soc. W. This popular layman's guide by one of the most prolific legal writers of eighteenth-century England went through ten English editions between 1736 and 1788. The mention of "All Manner of Persons" in the subtitle is significant. Jacob though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. This is also evident in his other publications such as The Common Law Common-Placed 1726 and Treatise of Law. unknown books‎

Text foxed pages 375-382 bound out of order but present. Good.

Joe Felcone's long note on this title explains how "Barclay's 'little troubles' as he called them began to develop into a major crisis." Barclay had a weakness for the ladies and was charged with having attempted to seduce several of them; as well as lying horse stealing baptizing a horse and "of inhumanely beating his 'negro wench' Chloe." Though exonerated he was nevertheless "admonished and his pastoral connection was dissolved." Kerr who was a member of Barclay's congregation appealed and though rebuffed continued to press his case so persistently "that he was barred from attending church." In contrast to earlier works each entry summarizes all of the laws relating to the subject and offers extensive interpretive commentary. Jacob 1686-1744 was also careful to omit obsolete terms. It was recognized almost immediately that Jacob had created a highly useful legal encyclopedia that was both more detailed and concise than any other abridgment of the period. ‎The Housekeeper's Instructor or Universal family cook :being a full and clear display of the art of cookery in all its branches . to which is added the complete art of carving . The Seventeenth Edition. Corrected revised and considerably improved by every modern addition and variation in the Art by Jacob Christopher Schnebbelie‎

‎London: Printed for Thomas Kelly 17 Paternoster-Row 1823. Octavo 21.5 x 14 cm. 464 pages. Index. Lacking the frontispiece portrait of Schnebbelie. Engraved title featuring a cornucopic table. Illustrated with eleven plates mostly carving instructions and menus. Stated seventeenth edition. While Andre Simon claimed this was "probably the most popular cookery book in England during the last decade of the eighteenth century" BG page 81 Maclean pushes back on this concept ". this is a bold assertion and the present compiler has no evidence to justify it." Maclean page 69. Jacob Schnebbelie first revised and expanded The Houekeeper's Instructor in 1804. A number of institutions date this printing as 1923 and we've found no supporting evidence of this nor reason to think this dating is far off the mark. The estimate of the date was not shared by experienced culinary bookseller Marian L. Gore whose bookseller ticket and pricing code are present in this volume along with a copy of her invoice for this and other works to cookery collector Walter Fillin. Her description estimates 1811. Some light soiling throughout; but generally clean and sound. A very good and attractive set in clean condition bound in original calf with gilt decorated rules to covers and gilt decoration to spine panels with six compartments and red and black labels. § Vols I and II second edition 1775 and Vol III only edition 1796. The three maps are lacking. All other illustrations are present in good condition but including usual offsetting and a few showing minor mottling and browning. Plate XI stated in the List of Plates to be a Bartolozzi engraved plate designed by Cypriani from an original onyx Camaio by the Greek artist Tryphon is the correct plate although in fact it bears no plate No. and the imprint " G. B. Cipriani Del I.K. Sherwin Sculp.". Although Bartolozzi normally signs his studio's plates J. K. Sherwin was an apprentice of Bartolozzi's and presumably was allowed to sign his engraving in this instance. The plate's design matches "The Marriage of Eros and Psyche" from Tryphon's Camaio in the Duke of Marlborough's Collection see e.g Wikipaedia: "The Marlborough Gem". Bentley BB 439. Inscribed by Schleiden to William Francis on the front wrapper.

A collection of four extremely rare offprints on botanical science by Schleiden whose landmark 1838 paper "Beiträge zur Phytogenesis" marks the beginning of cell theory and plant cytology. The first offprint is on the development of organs in phanerogams plants with seeds; "his theory of the flower and fruit is an admirable performance for the time even though we abandon his view of the stalk nature of placentas and some other notions as we obviously must. As Robert Brown founded the history of the development of the ovule so Schleiden founded that of the flower and his example influenced other botanists" Von Sachs History of Botany 1530-1860. Schleiden presented these offprints to British chemist Dr. William Francis who in 1852 joined with publisher Richard Taylor to found the firm of Taylor and Francis. unknown books‎
