Reliure à la bradel en demi cartonnage à coins façon vélin , dos lisse orné de motifs typographiques en tête et en queue, plats de papier marbré, gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve, tête dorée, couverture conservée. Notre manuscrit, dans sa majorité écrit de la main d'Ephraïm Mikhaël comporte des ratures, des ajouts de Mikhaël sur des placards encollés. Il présente également des ajouts à la plume et au crayon de la main du coauteur de la pièce, Bernard Lazare. On distingue la signature partielle «B Lazare» dans le coin supérieur gauche de la page de titre. Quelques petits manques de texte en raison de la fragilité du papier. A notre connaissance, aucun autre manuscrit de cette uvre n'a été conservé. Considéré par Victor Hugo comme «l'espoir de la poésie française»[1], ce Rimbaud méridional injustement oublié fut emporté par la tuberculose à l'âge de 23 ans. Ephraïm Mikhaël figura parmi les précurseurs du symbolisme et futunanimement acclamé et amèrement pleuré par le mouvement, qui perdit l'un de ses membres les plus prometteurs: «celui qui évoqua la nocturne dame déprise, l'hiérophante hautain et l'idéale vierge, n'est plus déjà.» (Préface de l'ouvrage posthume Poésies En Vers, Paris, Lemerre, 1890).» Comptant seulement trois ouvrages publiés du vivant de son auteur, l'uvre d'Ephraïm Mikhaël bénéficia d'une précoce notoriété en tant qu'émule du Parnasse, et fut exhumée il y a peu de temps après une longue période d'oubli. Cet ancien élève de l'école des Chartes épris de culture classique signa en effet un unique recueil de poèmes (L'automne), et composa les toutes premières pièces de théâtre symbolistes, notamment La fiancée de Corinthe, avec Bernard Lazare, qu'il adapta avec Catulle Mendès en opéra. Dans une France à l'aube de l'affaire Dreyfus, le jeune Mikhaël, originaire de la communauté juive toulousaine, fut également considéré par certains comme un ambassadeur du judaïsme, qu'il revendiqua en abandonnant définitivement son nom francisé «Georges Michel» pour sa forme hébraïque. Au sein du lycée Fontanes, futur lycée Condorcet, ce jeune poète en recherche d'absolu dirigea dans l'esprit joyeux d'Alfred Jarry le groupe de La Pléiade, avec, entre autres, Rodolphe Darzens, Pierre Quillard et Saint-Pol-Roux. Marqué par l'émulation intellectuelle des débuts du symbolisme et la liberté grisante des années 1880 dont il demeura l'éternelle incarnation, son talent fut très vite reconnu par ses pairs: on le compta parmi les habitués des fameux "mardis" du poète Stéphane Mallarmé qui enseignait aussi à Condorcet. Mikhael fréquenta également Heredia, se lia d'amitié avec Villiers de l'Isle-Adam dans les cafés de Montmartre et fut rapidement invité à contribuer aux revues symbolistes, notamment La Basoche, La Pléiade, ou La Jeune France dirigée par Paul Demeny, destinataire de la célèbre Lettre du voyant de Rimbaud(«JE est un autre [...]»). Durant ses huit années d'activités littéraire, Ephraïm Mikhael produisit une uvre conséquente, suggérant le mystère du monde, la magie et le prodige; on y rencontre des thèmes baudelairiens, des mythes antiques (Briséis, «La reine de Saba») et du moyen-âge chevaleresque sous l'influence de Wagner («Siegfried», «Florimond»). Mikhaël abandonna le mètre pour quelques uvres dramaturgiques, dont le Cor fleuri, sa «féerie en un acte» qu'il monta au Théâtre Libre en 1888. Souvent qualifié de Décadent au regard de son mélancolique recueil de poèmes L'automne, il suscita l'admiration de Mallarmé, Maeterlinck et surtout Catulle Mendès, qui signe une des plus belles élégies après sa tragique disparition : «Ses tristesses sont bien les siennes, et il pleure, le cher enfant, nostalgique de tant de ciels de jadis, l'automne, c'est le passé, des larmes que ses yeux seuls ont pleurées.» [1] Gilbert Lély, «Ephraïm Mikhaël», Nos Poètes, 15 fév. 1925, cité dans Ephraïm Mikhaël, Poèmes en vers et en prose, édités par Matthew Screech,Droz, 1994 Manuscrit autographe complet d'une des toutes premières pièces de théâtre symbolistes, écrite par Ephraïm Mikhael et Bernard Lazare, s'inspirant d'une légende antique auréolée de mystère, à la croisée du paganisme et du mysticisme chrétien. Composée en 1887 alors qu'Ephraïm Mikhaël était déjà rongé par la tuberculose, cette «légende dramatique» en trois actes ne sera pas créée au théâtre de son vivant. Ce manuscrit constitue un authentique témoin du travail coordonné des deux hommes, qui se considéraient comme cousins tant leurs affinités littéraires étaient grandes. Les pages du manuscrit retracent les nombreuses étapes d'écriture à travers les innombrables parties encollées dévoilant ou masquant les états antérieurs du texte abandonnés et réécrits par Mikhaël. On y rencontre çà et là les ajouts de Bernard Lazare, qui se charge en majorité des didascalies, et dont l'écriture serrée se distingue aisément de l'ample plume de son acolyte. S'inspirant d'un récit du Livre des Merveilles de Phlégon, auteur du IIe siècle de notre ère, la pièce conte le destin de deux amants païens, Apollonia et Manticlès, réunis dans la mort après avoir été séparés par Bénénikè, mère de la jeune fille récemment convertie au christianisme. Ephraïm Mikhaël corrigea systématiquement le nom de «Bérénice» en «Bérénikè», s'éloignant de la référence cornélienne pour donner une couleur plus antique au récit. En tous points fidèle à l'esthétique symboliste, telle qu'énoncée un an plus tôt dans le fameux manifeste du mouvement, la pièce est traversée par le motif de la revenante d'outre-tombe et de la tension religieuse : «Je voudrais que les Euménides nous reçoivent tous deux au seuil de l'Hadès, comme des amants fugitifs dans un bois sacré»(Acte I, scène IV); à la fin de la pièce, la fiancée morte de chagrin dans un couvent revient sous la forme de spectre entraîner son amant dans une union éternelle : « Le glorieux Erôs m'a prêté sa force divine pour lever les pierres de la tombe; la nuit funèbre n'a pu fermer mes yeux qui te cherchaient au loin» (Acte III, scène VI). La pièce marque également la filiation d'Ephraïm Mikhaël avec le romantisme, le mythe ayant déjà été traité par une ballade éponyme de Goethe puis dans un poème d'Anatole France, intitulé Noces corinthiennes paru en 1876. Le caractère énigmatique de la pièce a mené à de nombreuses interprétations: rejet du divin ou au contraire syncrétisme païen et chrétien imprégné de mysticisme? On peut considérer la pièce comme une tentative de réconciliation entre les intérêts respectifs de leurs auteurs: d'un côté Ephraïm Mikhaël, jeune chartiste épris de Grèce antique, et de l'autre son ami Bernard Lazare «fasciné par les périodes de transition culturelle, les moments dans l'histoire où les civilisations et les religions se rencontrent et se confrontent» (Nelly Wilson, Bernard-Lazare, Cambridge University Press, 1978). Cette uvre signale la présence d'un fait religieux universel, une aspiration vers l'au-delà et l'invisible que le Verbe dévoile par des symboles. D'aucuns ont vu dans la Fiancée de Corinthe un manifeste anti-chrétien, du fait de l'origine juive des deux auteurs, souffrant sans doute de l'antisémitisme de la société française à la veille de l'affaire Dreyfus. Ainsi Félix Fénéon accueille la publication de la pièce en ces termes: «on comprendra, sans doute, pourquoi deux Sémites, mécontents de Goethe et de M. France, sont venus nous dire leur sentiment de l'introduction du christianisme dans la société païenne» (La revue indépendante, tome IX, octobre-décembre 1888). Malgré les dissensions qui ont prévenu sa création au théâtre, La Fiancée de Corinthe fut bien reçue par la critique après sa publication l'année suivante; les deux écrivains furent notamment félicités par leur maître Mallarmé, et leurs amis du journal Pléiade. La pièce est par ailleurs dédiée à leur ami le poète Catulle Mendès, qui fera du premier acte un livret d'opéra avec Ephraïm Mikhaël. Unique témoignage autographe d'un drame aux accents prophétiques ; l'auteur partagea moins de deux ans plus le destin des jeunes amants de cette pièce, trouvant selon ses dires la délivrance dans la mort: «bientôt ils se perdent dans la nuit resplendissante de surnaturelles clartés» (Acte III, scène VII). - Photos sur www.Edition-originale.com -‎
