PAIA, Moses
Single sheet. A trifle creased. A rare survival of a chart demonstrating a remarkably involved and somewhat overworked system for a universal language combining both pasigraphy writing and pasilogy sound. In Paić's system individual words are replaced by concepts each concept is assigned an Arabic numeral and in turn each digit is assigned a sound; for example 'Ich höre' 'I hear' is written 2074111 and pronounced dullomaba and 'Du hörst' i.e. 'you hear' would be 2074112 or dullomabe. Rhythm is also incorporated requiring the speaker to intone concepts in specific ways employing iambics pyrrhicians and dactyls. Needless to say the complexity of the system ensured its immediate decline into obscurity no doubt accounting for the paucity of surviving copies of this convoluted chart. OCLC records copies at just six locations BGE BL Huntington NUK SSB and Warsaw. . First edition. Dimensions 660 x 780 mm folded to 220 mm. In Commission bei Rudolf Lechner unknown

PAIC, Moses
PASIGRAPHIE mittels ARABISCHER ZAHLZEICHEN. Ein Versuch
Semlin Poland: I. C. Soppron 1859. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good-Fine/No Jacket. Blue unlettered cloth with gilt central motifs to each cover joints and bottom spine rubbed and some slight cloth fraying and trace of corner rubbing small spot of cloth loss lower back and 3 or so small dark spots to front hardly visible against dark blue cloth. 36 pp. gilt edges outer sides of end-papers and pastedown have a slightly glossy moire-patterned surface though inner sides of end-papers as rest of text; no obvious internal faults being clean bright and unmarked. Am a little puzzled by binding as it seems original gilt edging to end-papers and these contiguous with paste-downs but feels later than pub. date perhaps a later private high-end rebinding with gilt added. A curious exercise in using arabic numbers as basis for a universal non-phonetic language. Very scarce.

I. C. Soppron hardcover

PARSONS, Moses
Manuscript: A Catalogue of those that belonged to or attended upon the private School kept at Gloucester by Moses Parsons. Began August 24th 1741: Finished May 12 1744
Gloucester Massachusetts 1741. Softcover. Very Good. Manuscript. 24mo. Three quarter leaves pinned inside two outer full leaves measuring about 3 ½†x 6â€. One quarter leaf is loose laid-in. The full front cover leaf titled in manuscript is trimmed above the title and has one horizontal cut below the title very good. The three-quarter leaves list the names of students 75 boys and 13 girls in ink on the rectos and versos. Born in Gloucester Massachusetts in 1716 Moses Parsons graduated from Harvard in 1736 and while pursuing his theological studies he taught a private school in his native town as noted in the catalogue from 1741-44. In 1744 he accepted a call to Byfield Parish where he was distinguished as a preacher until his death in 1783 having seen the Church through the Great Awakening led by George Whitefield and through the Revolutionary War. At his school Parsons taught a veritable Who’s Who of early Gloucester residents – individual and family names such as Winthrop Sargent whose son was a prominent patriot and Governor of the Mississippi Territory William Ellery Nathaniel Haraden whose son served as the Sailing Master of the U.S.S. Constitution and many others. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities at Byfield Parsons was instrumental in founding Governor Dummer Academy now known as The Governor’s Academy. During his tenure at his private school Parson’s calculates that he taught 75 boys and 28 girls quite a few of whom would go on to be immortalized by Gloucester historians John Babson and James Pringle. An important early manuscript documenting an overlooked piece of Gloucester’s local history.

Reference: William Cutter. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts. unknown
