This charming and rare edition was the last edition of the original one-volume printing. Following this edition the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems such as '<em>The Motto</em>' '<em>The Mistress</em>' '<em>Ode to Pindar</em>' and '<em>Davideis'</em> are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works but in doing so he misinterpreted the metrical patterns and in doing so did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. Lower board nearly detached. Occasional spots/foxing the occasional tear. Two PO bookplates of Arthur Salwey and Isaac George Manley. Arthur Salwey was a prominent puritan and member of the Westminster Assembly of Divines. He was Pastor of Severne-Stoake in the County of Worcester. Isaac George Manley sailed with Captain Cook in Endeavour as servant to Robert Molineaux the Master. He rose through the ranks to become Admiral of the Red in January 1837 nine months before he died. Next to his name on his bookplate he has inscribed "to his daughter Anne" on July 17th 1830. Contemporary blind-ruled calf. Heavily rubbed. Pastedowns sprung several gatherings protruding from text-block scattered spotting. Abraham Cowley 1618-1667 English poet and royalist agent. Achieving remarkable poetic success in his youth Cowley's life was somewhat interrupted by the tumultuous 1640s. An avowed royalist after his eviction from Trinity College Cambridge he pinned his fortunes to the King's cause. Following the court to Paris after defeat at Marston Moor Cowley served as a secretary and agent to Queen Henrietta Maria's court-in-exile from 1644-54 a position terminated only by his arrest during a mission to England. The first collected edition of Cowley's poetry arranged following his release from Cromwell's custody appeared in 1656 and contained his Mistress Pindarique Odes and epic life of King David Davideis in addition to an extensive selection of miscellaneous early verse. Subsequent printings as here appearing after the Restoration would include his 'A Discourse by way of Vision Concerning the Government of Oliver Cromwell' a meditation spurred by the death of the reviled Protector. . This charming and rare sixth edition was the last edition of the original one volume printing. Following this edition the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems such as '<em>The Motto</em>' '<em>The Mistress</em>' '<em>Ode to Pindar</em>' and '<em>Davideis'</em> are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works but in doing so he misinterpreted the metrical patterns and in doing so did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. Cowley 1616-67 was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15; and he went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. Cowley was a staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen Henrietta Maria where he helped to encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England" but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument refers to him as "the English Virgil" and Perkin asserts that his "fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. The first part here contains the poet's best-known mature works while the second is composed of his early efforts and the third his writings on plants. Our volume is from the collection of Robert S. Pirie 1934-2015 an extremely successful lawyer and investment banker who amassed the finest library of 16th and 17th century English literature in private hands during his lifetime. In 1984 he was elected one of the 40 members of the Roxburghe Club the world's oldest society of bibliophiles. Our volume has a thrice-distinguished provenance. The first recorded owner is Archibald Philip Primrose 5th Earl of Rosebery 1847-1929 Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during 1894-95. Earlier he had been Foreign Secretary twice as well as Leader of the Opposition. As stated in the British Armorial Bindings database Rosebery was an "ardent and discriminating book collector." Afterwards the present volume became the property of Bombay-born and Cambridge-educated Lawrence Strangman 1907-80 son of Sir Thomas Strangman Q.C. and Lady Winifred Strangman. Much of his celebrated collection went to his alma mater Trinity Hall in the University of Cambridge where it is maintained as the Strangman Collection in Jerwood Library while other portions were handled by Sotheby’s. A captain in WWII Strangman served as a distinguished Intelligence Officer. Our third recorded owner is Robert S. Abraham Cowley 1618-1667 English poet and royalist agent. Achieving remarkable poetic success in his youth Cowley's life was somewhat interrupted by the tumultuous 1640s. An avowed royalist after his eviction from Trinity College Cambridge he pinned his fortunes to the King's cause. Following the court to Paris after defeat at Marston Moor Cowley served as a secretary and agent to Queen Henrietta Maria's court-in-exile from 1644-54 a position terminated only by his arrest during a mission to England. The first collected edition of Cowley's poetry arranged following his release from Cromwell's custody appeared in 1656 and contained his Mistress Pindarique Odes and epic life of King David Davideis in addition to an extensive selection of miscellaneous early verse. Subsequent printings as here appearing after the Restoration would include his 'A Discourse by way of Vision Concerning the Government of Oliver Cromwell' a meditation spurred by the death of the reviled Protector. <p>The Works of Abraham Cowley Printed and Published by Jacob Tonson 1707-08 3 Volumes with 33 beautifully engraved plates including one folding linen-backed plate. Volume 2 has 2 pages of advertising at the rear. The text is trimmed by the book binder not affecting text with occaisonal light browning and spotting. Volume 3 M2 has a marginal repair and boards are loose on Volume 1 and Volume 3 has upper joint split. Cloth Slip-case a little rubbed at the extremities but the binding is superb and certainly worthy of repair. Gold leaf edges with gold leaf filigree and wonderful Red Moroccan leather. Binder is unknown but certainly is of the quality of a Riviere binding placing the rebinding of the book in the 1800's. The bookplate is the initials 'D D' entwined with one another and the words. Quis Separatbit and the date 1783 making this owner a standing member of the Order of Saint Patrick founded by George III in 1783 specifically for the Irish aristocracy who in many cases supported the Catholic Irish rights some of course did not. This work is very nice with many wonderful poems plays and writings as well as many notables living during Cowley's time. There were many reprints of this collection which formed the standard edition until 1881 when it was superseded by AB Grosartís privately printed edition in two volumes for the Chertsey Worthies library. Born in Lismore County Waterford Crawford 1785-1869 entered the navy in 1800 as a first class volunteer on board HMS Diamond "in which he assisted in the capture of many of the enemy's ships armed and otherwise" O'Byrne. He transferred to the Immortalité and Clyde frigates under Admiral Owen as a midshipman "and appears to have been almost daily in action from June 1802 until Aug. 1806 with detachments of the Boulogne flotilla". With Duckworth on the Royal George at the forcing of the Dardanelles in 1807 Crawford was present at the destruction of a Turkish squadron off Point Pesquies. Promoted lieutenant in the Sultan he was involved in frequent cutting out operations in the Gulf of Genoa taking part in the pursuit of the French ships of the line Robuste and Lion in 1809. In 1810-11 he served under Admiral Carew in the blockade of Toulon and support of the Catalonian insurgents on the coast being present at the siege of Tarragona. Promoted commander in 1815 he was given command of the Grasshopper on the West India Station where he served until invalided home in 1829. Tom Pocock praises the quality of Crawford's descriptions of naval actions the sea and his portraits of fellow officers as in the postprandial face of one lieutenant assuming "the hue of an unripe mulberry". Crawford also talks of Congreve rockets Fulton's torpedoes and the transformation of the quarterdeck of a frigate into a dancefloor for an onboard ball. 2 vols octavo.
