Very Good.<br/><br/> Congressman Pomeroy of Auburn who represented New York in Congress during the Civil War years and early Reconstruction has high praise for Colonel Clark serving on the staff of General Banks and recently wounded in the advance on Port Hudson. In the earliest days of the War during the Baltimore disorders he "mingled during the day and following night with the populace and rioters gathered all possible information and on the following morning returned to Washington and laid the information before the military authorities. Communications with Annapolis being cut off he accepted the hazardous position of bearer of dispatches from the War Department to Gen'l Butler and of the seventeen messengers sent on that mission was the only one who succeeded in reaching his destination without arrest and that was accomplished only by a night march on foot of twenty-five miles in a country with which he was unfamiliar and by swimming the Patuxent within sound of the voices of the enemies sentinels." <br/>OCLC 768761257 1- Allen Cy Pub. Dated April 26 1865 this paper provides considerable detail on Lincoln's funeral. The coverage includes an OBIT on Lincoln and a small engraving of the slain president. Most of the coverage is on the second page of the newspaper. The articles include stories on events at the capital to honor Lincoln and the impact of the event on a grieving nation.</p> books

Chromolithograph broadside 16" x 20".Creases where folded slight abrasion at the conjunction of one of the folds some slight chipping to the lower right corner and the left margin which extend a little into image; still a colorful and unusual piece. A scarce early 20th century broadside version of the Emancipation Proclamation in the form of a WWI "uplift" poster. At the center is Abraham Lincoln holding a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. He is flanked with smaller images of Paul L. Dunbar Frederick Douglas Lt. Col. Franklin A. Dennison and Lt. Col. Otis B. Duncan. Other images include soldiers farmers children at school and a bald eagle perched on top of American Flags. 8vo one sheet printed on both sides. Even toning and aging small closed tear to the upper margin; otherwise very good. This is a rather scarce government document that informs the military that the "Thirteenth Amendment" has passed and slavery is officially abolished. Article XIII states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as a punishment for a crime whereby the party shall have been duly convicted shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This document is signed in type by William H. Seward 1801-1872 as the Secretary of State. Congress would follow with a Civil Rights Act of 1866 to give African Americans the same rights as all citizens but this small printed document presenting the essence of the "Thirteenth Amendment" is an important piece of history. The Herald discusses the eminent capture of John Wilkes Booth and gives an updat on Secretary Seward"s condition. The paper also carries a story on the conspiracy to kill Lincoln and an arrest made in Baltimore. The Herald gives a clear picture of a nation in mourning and the large crowds that turned out for a final viewing of the late president. An important piece of American History. </p> books

Denver: Halsey M. Rhoads 1900. Later printing. A very good copy small repaired tear at top small tear at bottom both in blank areas vertical and horizontal folds some minor edge wear. 1 sheet. Sheet size 17 3/4 x 14 inches. Calligraphic portrait of Lincoln in which the script of the Emancipation Proclamation forms Lincoln's image within a 9 x 11 inch decorated frame surrounded by the names of those members of Congress who voted for the resolution as an amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The original design by W.H. Pratt Davenport 1865 contained just the portrait and border Eberstadt 40 followed by this variation with the additional names 42. Only one at auction in the last forty years and that one dampstained. Quite scarce in all forms: OCLC locates five libraries with the original 1865 print 40 two with the 1865 variant 42 in the Lib. of Congress and Lincoln Memorial Library and two of this later edition: Lincoln Memorial Library and Lilly Library. The earliest publication of the Gettysburg Address in book form. This edition was preceded only by the exceptionally rare sixteen-page pamphlet THE GETTYSBURG SOLEMNITIES known in only three copies. <br> <br> Lincoln made his speech at the dedication of a cemetery on the Gettysburg battlefield some four months after the bloody and pivotal battle that turned the tide of the Civil War in favor of the Union. Lincoln's speech was preceded by an address from Edward Everett the most famous orator of his day. Everett's speech took some ninety minutes to deliver and is largely forgotten. Lincoln's speech delivered in only a few minutes is immortal. It is a supreme distillation of American values and of the sacrifices necessary for the survival of liberty and freedom. "The WASHINGTON CHRONICLE of 18-21 November reported extensively on this ceremony and included a verbatim text of 'Edward Everett's Great Oration.' On the fourth day it noted in passing that the President had also made a speech but gave no details. When it came to the separate publication on 22 November Everett's 'Oration' was reprinted from the standing type but Lincoln's speech had to be set up. It was tucked away as a final paragraph on page 16 of the pamphlet THE GETTYSBURG SOLEMNITIES. It was similarly treated when the meanly produced leaflet was replaced by a 48-page booklet published by Baker and Godwin of New York in the same year" - PMM. <br> <br> Lincoln's address appears on page 40 and parenthetical notes are added indicating "applause" and "long-continued applause." Boston 1864. 88110pp. plus folding map. Antique-style three-quarter calf and marbled boards. 19th-century ink stamp on titlepage contemporary inscription on second leaf. Internally clean. Very good. Devoted almost entirely to the Massachusetts war effort published early in January 1864. The folding map shows the Soldier's National Cemetery at Gettysburg dedicated Nov. 19 1863 with the long speech of Edward Everett of Massachusetts and the short "Dedicatory Speech by President Lincoln" better known as the Gettysburg Address. Also printed is the "Programme of Arrangements" of that day a list of Massachusetts soldiers killed at Gettysburg and buried there and details of the cemetery. Washington state newspaper issue reporting on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The interior two pages are both column-edged in black the lead headline reading: "President Lincoln Murdered!! Mr. Seward Stabbed." The newspaper likewise reports on the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomattox and the end of the Civil War. The issue for April 1st reports a small column on the unconstitutionality of the Emancipation Proclamation. The WASHINGTON DEMOCRAT was published from Oct. 17 1864 to July 15 1865. Scarce. unknown books
