<p>The Works of Abraham Cowley Printed and Published by Jacob Tonson 1707-08 3 Volumes with 33 beautifully engraved plates including one folding linen-backed plate. Volume 2 has 2 pages of advertising at the rear. The text is trimmed by the book binder not affecting text with occaisonal light browning and spotting. Volume 3 M2 has a marginal repair and boards are loose on Volume 1 and Volume 3 has upper joint split. Cloth Slip-case a little rubbed at the extremities but the binding is superb and certainly worthy of repair. Gold leaf edges with gold leaf filigree and wonderful Red Moroccan leather. Binder is unknown but certainly is of the quality of a Riviere binding placing the rebinding of the book in the 1800's. The bookplate is the initials 'D D' entwined with one another and the words. Quis Separatbit and the date 1783 making this owner a standing member of the Order of Saint Patrick founded by George III in 1783 specifically for the Irish aristocracy who in many cases supported the Catholic Irish rights some of course did not. This work is very nice with many wonderful poems plays and writings as well as many notables living during Cowley's time. Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets of the 17th century with 14 printings of his Works published between 1668 and 1721. The Works were collected in 1668 when Thomas Sprat afterwards bishop of Rochester brought out a splendid edition in folio to which he prefixed a graceful and elegant life of the poet. There were many reprints of this collection which formed the standard edition until 1881 when it was superseded by AB Grosart�s privately printed edition in two volumes for the Chertsey Worthies library. Spratt and two odes on Cowley's death by Thomas Higgons and Sir John Denham. Once considered the epitome of his era's wit the author of "The Mistress" verses in honor of love and various women included in this volume suffered a notable decline in popularity in subsequent years prompting Pope's musing "Who now reads Cowley . . . but still I love the language of his heart." And indeed despite the vagaries of reputation he has always had his worthy appreciators.<br> Cowley's Pindaric odes are present here as are the "Davideis" and "Davideidos"; also set forth are the "delightful little prose Essays with verse interwoven" for which The Concise Cambridge History of English Literature believes Cowley will most ultimately be remembered. Octavo bound in three quarters vellum over gold paper-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine illustrated with four full-page tissue-guarded copperplate engravings of Cupid Bathyllus Europa & Venus headpieces and tailpieces by Stephen Gooden. One of only 725 copies produced this is number 680. In very good condition. Founded in 1922 in London by Francis Meynell his second wife Vera Mendel and their mutual friend David Garnett The Nonesuch Press was established in the basement of Garnett's bookshop in Soho. Nonesuch was unusual among private presses in that it used a small hand press to design books and then had them printed by commercial printers. Among the press's best-known editions were the collected works of William Congreve and William Wycherley and translations of Cervantes and Dante. Originally published in 1686 Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle's Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds is considered to be one of the first major works of the Age of Enlightenment offering an explanation for the heliocentric model of the Universe suggested by Nicolaus Copernicus in 1543. Spratt and two odes on Cowley's death by Thomas Higgons and Sir John Denham. Once considered the epitome of his era's wit the author of "The Mistress" verses in honor of love and various women included in this volume suffered a notable decline in popularity in subsequent years prompting Pope's musing "Who now reads Cowley . . . but still I love the language of his heart." And indeed despite the vagaries of reputation he has always had his worthy appreciators.<br>Â Â Â Â Cowley's Pindaric odes are present here as are the "Davideis" and "Davideidos"; also set forth are the "delightful little prose Essays with verse interwoven" for which The Concise Cambridge History of English Literature believes Cowley will most ultimately be remembered.
