Original red crushed half morocco "bound at the Riverside Press" ink-stamp to front free endpapers flat bands to spines forming compartments titles direct to second and third within one-line frames gilt two-line frames to remaining compartments gilt red cloth sides top edges gilt others untrimmed brown endpapers bound red silk page-markers. 4 tissue-guarded hand-coloured photographic views of the Lincoln Memorial 4 photogravure portrait frontispieces with captioned tissue-guards 32 further plates and maps. A few mild spots to cloth light toning partly unopened. An excellent set. The "Manuscript Edition" number 75 of 1000 sets each containing a leaf of Beveridge's original working manuscript. Beveridge retired from politics in 1922 and dedicated his last few years to writing what has come to be regarded as "the first Lincoln biography to meet modern scholarly standards" ANB. He had a horror of mistakes and would "work over his material again and again rewriting the entire chapter many times - a single chapter in the second volume was rewritten fifteen times - until it had taken a shape which appeared to him fairly complete Â… in that form he submitted it to recognized experts in the different phases of the history asking or rather urging them to correct misstatements of fact or wrong inferences or an unconscious bias of treatment" Preface. This scrupulous treatment of the facts of Lincoln's life almost certainly prevented Beveridge from completing the biography before his death in 1927. In order to ensure that the project was finish his wife handed his research over to Carl Sandburg whose hagiographical account of Lincoln's later career contrasted strongly with Beveridge's: "so thorough and professionalized a biography that he might have incorporated more of Lincoln's Whiggish political roots into his work; but Beveridge a Republican progressive and former senator from Indiana had become so disillusioned with his own party that he actually found very little to admire in Lincoln as a politician" Guelzo Abraham Lincoln p. 456. Carl Sandburg was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his Complete Poems 1950 and then again for his Abraham Lincoln: The War Years 1939. The Prairie Years’ covers Lincoln’s life from his birth to his first inauguration. Originally printed in two volumes the author himself has this to say about this edition “I first planned this book for one large volume. When completed however it was necessary for initial publication to issue it in two. It is here made available to a large part of the public I had in mind all the time.†The War Years covers the Civil War period until Lincoln’s death by assassination shortly after war’s end.<br> In a real sense this is the definitive biography of Lincoln illustrated with photographs and reproductions of paintings drawings and sketches.
