<p>PARISIAN APOTHECARIES' GUIDE FOR PHYSICIANS AND PERFUMERS ALIKE ¶ 192 leaves 8vo A-2A8 172 x 109 mm ¶ First and only edition of this Parisian apothecaries' guide to preparing all manner of therapeutic substances. It ranks among the earliest books—the first according to one scholar—that might conceivably have replaced the <i>Dynameron</i> a pharmaceutical treatise by the 13th-century Byzantine physician Nicholas Myrepsos which remained a staple of Parisian medical literature well into the 17th century. ¶ The work is divided into nine sections corresponding to the different types of medicine an apothecary should carry syrups opiates oils etc. Each section includes a separate dedication that on conserves dedicated to Marie de Medici that on tablets to the Abbess Saint-Pierre-les-Dames in Reims. Recipes include both lists of ingredients and preparation instructions. ¶ Son of an esteemed surgeon La Framboisière 1560-1636 carved out his own distinguished career in medicine serving as an army doctor physician in service to Louis XIII and professor at the Collège de France. His professional life began in Reims where he returned in 1617 for the remainder of it. He published widely in both French and Latin his complete works seeing at least six editions between 1613 and 1669. ¶ The present work blends French with some Latin a thoughtful decision explained in his Latin preface for the French Senate. When speaking of things only a doctor would know he uses Latin perhaps a little Greek "quia solius Medici est cognoscere Latino ac nonnunquam Graeco explicavi". On the other hand "Particularly for perfumers Seplasiarios I reasonably explain the method of preparation in French as the majority proves ignorant of Latin" "Praeparandi verò rationem…"; fol. 3v translated. In his French preface for the apothecaries after further discussing his use of the vernacular he plainly states his fundamental reason for preparing the book: "If you are also curious to know why I have declared these Ordonnances for you we shall see from now on all useful medicines arranged in order in your shops and the confusion banished forever" fol. 5v translated. To be sure if any text could have imposed order on what must have been a broad spectrum of dispensaries ranging from formally trained physicians to dangerous quacks the author's polyglot approach may have stood a chance. ¶ We locate two copies in North America New York Academy of Medicine; Lloyd Library & Museum Cincinnati. --- PROVENANCE: Early handwritten folio numbers added to the list of substance categories fol. 8r suggesting the book might well have been used by a member of its intended audience. Early inscription by one Cabanié on fol. 9v. Early pen trials at front and back. --- CONDITION: Contemporary limp parchment lined with printed waste. Title vignette; head-pieces; initials. ¶ Mostly marginal worming occasionally affecting some text; scattered mild soiling; leaf A2 trimmed close in the outer margin shaving most of a printed marginal note; corners of text block bumped.
