‎Gebraucht, aber gut erhalten, kl. m-strich am Fußschnitt. - Ein prachtvolles Werk, hier Nr. 875 von 1111 gedruckten Exemplaren. - Gemeinsam mit einer seiner Schwestern leistete Abraham Örtel schon in der Kindheit in Antwerpen einen Beitrag zum Familienunterhalt, indem er Karten illuminierte, d.h. die Drucke kolorierte. Mit etwa 20 Jahren wurde er in der Gilde der Maler als Illuminator von Karten (afsetter van carten) zugelassen. Wie schon der Vater, begann auch der Sohn mit Drucken, Karten und Büchern zu handeln und sammelte sich zum persönlichen Gebrauch eine umfangreiche Bibliothek zusammen. Die Verlagshäuser, von denen sich einige - wie dann auch Ortelius - auf den Druck von Karten spezialisierten, besaßen im 16. Jahrhundert internationales Ansehen und versorgten weite Teile der christlichen Welt mit ihren Produkten. Seine erste Weltkarte produzierte Ortelius, der seit 1563 in der Korrespondenz als Kosmograph bezeichnet wird, im Jahr 1564. Es war eine jener Wandkarten, die sich in der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts großer Beliebtheit erfreuten und die Wände in den Häusern vermögender Kaufleute und Honoratioren und öffentlicher Gebäude - nicht nur in den Niederlanden - schmückten. Bereits zu dieser Zeit war er mit dem Sammeln von Karten beschäftigt, die er später unter dem Titel Thea-trum orbis terrarum als ersten Atlas publizierte. Für Ortelius war die Geographie "das Auge der Geschichte", wie er in seinem Vorwort zu diesem Atlas bekannte. Die Vergangenheit und ihre Verortung interessierten ihn in besonderem Maße, wie die Karte des Heiligen Landes bereits andeutet. Zahlreiche historische Hinweise nahm er in seine Karten und die begleitenden Texte auf. Das historische Interesse, das er mit vielen Humanisten teilte, führte zu einem Beiwerk, dem so genannten Parergon, das historische Karten enthielt. Ortelius produzierte somit nicht nur den ersten Atlas, sondern schuf einen weiteren Typus, den Geschichtsatlas, der bis heute die Vergangenheit räumlich veranschaulicht. Es ist insbesondere das Parergon, das in der Forschung als "kartographische Spitzenleistung" bezeichnet wird. Als Ortelius 1598 starb, waren beide Werke bereits in mehrfachen Auflagen und vielen Sprachen erschienen, und auch nach seinem Tod wurden sie erweitert und in neuen Ausgaben publiziert. Abraham Ortelius also Ortels Orthellius Wortels 1527-1598 was a Flemish cartographer and geographer conventionally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Theatre of the World. He is also believed to be the first person to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting to their present positions. Ortelius was born in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg ruled Seventeen Provinces. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius' father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later move to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He traveled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 1575�1576; France 1559�1560; England and Ireland 1576 and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560 however when travelling with Mercator to Trier Lorraine and Poitiers he seems to have been attracted largely by Mercator�s influence towards the career of a scientific geographer.
