Lincoln Abraham
Abraham Lincoln Signed Carte-de-Visite.
Rare original Anthony Berger carte-de-visite signed by Abraham Lincoln as President; the most recognizable portrait of Lincoln which was later used as the model for the Lincoln cent. Original mounted albumen photograph double ruled in gilt with "Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries" stamp to the verso. Boldly signed by Abraham Lincoln "A Lincoln." With an additional inscription on the verso which reads "Contributed for the benefit of the S.A.S. of Westford Mass. at their Levee Dec. 14th 1864 by Mr. Lincoln." Through the use of many paid assistants renowned 19th century portraitist Mathew B. Brady produced thousands of photographs documenting the American Civil War including portraits of Lincoln Grant and both Union and Confederate soldiers in camps and battlefields. The body of work created by Brady's photographers including Anthony Berger Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan has become the most important visual documentation of the Civil War. Taken on February 9 1864 by the manager of Brady's Washington studio Anthony Berger this the most recognizable portrait of the 16th president of the United States was later used by Victor David Brenner to create the Lincoln cent. During this same sitting Berger also took the photograph of Lincoln that would later appear on the five dollar bill. The present example was signed by Lincoln to help the Sanitary Association of Westford Massachusetts raise funds for Unions soldiers toward the end Civil War. An example at Heritage Auction brought 175000 in 2006. In near fine condition. An exceptional piece. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through the American Civil War the country's greatest moral cultural constitutional and political crisis and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America abolished slavery and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln ran for President in 1860 sweeping the North in victory. The South was outraged by Lincoln's election and in response secessionists implemented plans to leave the Union before he took office in March 1861. War began in April 1861 when secessionist forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina just over a month after Lincoln's inauguration and after years of deadly military conflict officially ended on April 9 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Appomattox Court House. On April 14 1865 just days after the war's end at Appomattox Lincoln was attending a play at Ford's Theatre with his wife Mary when he was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln is remembered as the martyr hero of the United States and is consistently ranked as one of the greatest presidents in American history. unknown books

Honolulu: Bishop Museum Press 1916-1917. Rare complete first edition set of Fornander's foundational work on Hawaiian history and legend. Quarto 9 parts in 3 volumes bound in three quarters 20th century calf with red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt gilt ruling and stamping to the spine in six compartments within raised bands original wrappers bound in. In fine condition. A rare and desirable complete first edition set. In 1831 Swedish-born ethnologist Abraham Fornander emigrated to America where he soon joined the whaleship Ann Alexander which departed from New Bedford Massachusetts in 1841 a five-year campaign in the Pacific Ocean. In 1844 he deserted the ship in Honolulu and soon became a citizen of the Kingdom of Hawaii marrying a Hawaiian chiefess from Molokai named Pinao Alanakapu in 1847. After founding several publications in Hawaii Fornander was appointed to the circuit court a position that allowed him to do extensive travel within the islands and learn a great deal about Hawaiian mythology and language. Fornander paid special attention to legends and genealogies that he thought preserved the history of the Hawaiian islands after their settlement--their external and internal wars dynastic quarrels and eventually their contact by Captain James Cook and George Vancouver. On his death in 1887 his voluminous research passed to the Bishop Museum who eventually ensured their publication. Bishop Museum Press hardcover books

Lincoln Abraham; Stephen A. Douglas
Political Debates between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas In the Celebrated Campaign of 1858 in Illinois.
Columbus: Follett Foster and Company 1860. First edition second issue with the Table of Contents on page ii of "the most important series of American political debates" Howes L338. Octavo original publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine and elaborate blind stamping to the front and rear panels. In very good condition. Ownership name. Although the debates were originally performed during the Illinois Senatorial race in 1858 they were published when both men became presidential candidates in 1860. Douglas won the race for senator but the debates were his undoing in the presidential race as Lincoln reminded voters repeatedly of the inconsistency between Douglas' principle of "popular sovereignty" in which the new territories would individually determine the status of slavery and the Dred Scott decision in which the Supreme Court declared that slavery would not be excluded from the territories by Congress. As a result Douglas was too tolerant of slavery for many northerners and not vigorous enough for Southern Democrats. Somewhat surprisingly for an attorney Lincoln did not seek Douglas' permission to publish a book of their combined speeches although Douglas was later given the last-minute opportunity--he declined--to make corrections to his own remarks" Morris 121. Heschel Abraham Joshua
Man Is Not Alone: A Philosophy of Religion.
Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society of America 1951. First edition of this modern classic of Jewish theology. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some chips and rubbing. Jacket designed by Marshall Lee. Man Is Not Alone is a profound beautifully written examination of the ingredients of piety: how man senses God's presence explores it accepts it and builds life upon it. Abraham Joshua Heschel's philosophy of religion is not a philosophy of doctrine or the interpretation of a dogma. He erects his carefully built structure of thought upon foundations which are universally valid but almost generally ignored. It was Man Is Not Alone which led Reinhold Niebuhr accurately to predict that Heschel would "become a commanding and authoritative voice not only in the Jewish community but in the religious life of America." Stuart Rosenberg director; Richter WD. screenwriter; Arthur A. Ross Thomas O. Murton book; Ray Abraham photographs; Robert Red
Brubaker Vernacular photo album and scrapbook documenting the 1980 film
Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1980. Vintage vernacular photo album and scrapbook by Ray Abraham a high school art teacher in Athens OH who also appeared as an extra in the film. Containing 17 predominantly color photographs of actors or crew members on location or interacting with the nearby community as well as clippings from local papers about the film signed letters addressed to Abraham from actors Robert Redford and Konrad Sheehan and other ephemera.

The film which was shot on location at the recently closed Junction City Prison in Ohio used locals as extras for the prison scenes and based on the newspaper clippings was a major source of excitement for the nearby towns. This extended to Abraham who apparently invited the stars of the film to attend an exhibition of his students' art work at Athens High School. While Redford declined local actor and apparent Redford look-alike James Linton caused quite the sensation among the teenagers. Altogether a detailed and charming look at the effects of a major Hollywood production on a community during location shooting.

Inspired by the 1969 nonfiction book "Accomplices to the Crime" by Tom Murton and Joe Hyams about abuse and corruption in the Arkansas prison system. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Scrapbook Good only with many interior pages loose or plastic sheets no longer attached.

Photographs variously sized most 3.5 x 5 inches.
