Image area 19-1/2" x 12-7/8" in 28" x 23" mat. 1 vols. Abraham Ortelius 1527-98 was a Flemish geographer of German origin. His major work Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1570 with later revisions and addendums was the first modern atlas. It was based on contemporary charts and maps and contained a collection of plates engraved by Frans Hagenberg in a uniform size and format. The Theatrum preceded the first atlas of Ortelius' good friend Gerardus Mercator. In fact popular sentimental legend has it that Mercator delayed publication of his own work so that his younger friend's would appear first. Although this simply isn't true Mercator wasn't ready the legendary cartographer did complement Ortelius for the "care and elegance" he had put into the Theatrum. unknown books

FIRST EDITION. In this work Kaau Boerhaave describes the process of the excretion of sweat from the sweat-glands of the skin and the motion of fluids within the body. The book also reprints his short lecture on the alchemists for which he received a gold medal from Leyden University. In this copy the lecture on alchemy is bound at the front of the volume. There was a second edition Lovanni 1779. Stieda calls this "a brilliant work." Abraham Kaau Boerhaave the prominent physician studied medicine at Leyden under his uncle Hermann Boerhaave. After graduating and practicing medicine at The Hague for several years Kaau-Boerhaave went to St. Petersburg where he was appointed professor of theoretical and practical medicine and pharmacy. FIRST EDITION of Lincoln's historic Cooper Union Address delivered on February 27 1860 at the Cooper Institute in New York. The speech is largely credited to having launched Lincoln's Presidential bid. In the fall of 1859 James A. Briggs who served on the lecture committee of the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn invited presidential candidate hopeful Abraham Lincoln to speak to a New York audience on any subject of his choosing. Lincoln accepted the invitation choosing to speak of the current political climate in America. William O. Stoddard an Illinois journalist who worked for President Lincoln during his administration noted that "No previous effort of his life cost him so much hard work as did that Cooper Institute speech" and that the resulting speech "was a masterly review of the history of the slavery question from the foundation of the government with a clear bold statesmanlike presentation of the then present attitude of parties and of sections. It exhibited a careful research a thorough knowledge and understanding of political movements and developments that staggered even the most laborious and painstaking students. As a bonus the publication included Wisconsin Republican senator James Doolittle's February 24 speech attaching 'the new doctrine of judicial infallibility' as did Lincoln's address at Cooper Union just three days later and also like Cooper Union railing agains 'the headstrong zeal pursued by the other party to force slavery into Territories'.<br /> <br /> "It was as if Republicans were now speaking with one voice: identifying with the founders attacking the Dred Scott decision rebuking John Brown and drawing their own 'dividing line' on slavery extension. Lincoln did not say it alone; but he said it best. 'Mr. Lincoln's is probably the most systematic and complete defense yet made of the Republican position with regard to Slavery' the Tribune declared in its initial advertisement for the reprints. 'We believe no speech has yet been made better calculated to win the intelligent minds over to our standard. Will the friends of the Cause everywhere aid us to circulate it'<br /> <br /> "The answer was yes. The Tribune Tract edition proved enormously popular going through at least five additional editions. <p>Lincoln and John Todd Stuart cousin of Lincoln's future wife Mary Todd had served together in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1834-1836. They formed Stuart & Lincoln on April 12 1837.</p> <b>ABRAHAM LINCOLN.</b>Newspaper. <i>Sangamo Journal</i> Springfield Ill. December 23 1837. 4 pp. 18 x 24¾ in. Double matted and framed with glass on both sides to display pages one and four. Slightly chipped 26 x 33 in. frame.<p>In the upper portion of the first column of the first page appears this five line advertisement: <i>"STUART & LINCOLN / ATTORNEYS and Counsellors at Law will practice / conjointly in the Courts of this Judicial Circuit. – / Office No. 4 Hoffman's Row up stairs. / Springfield april 12 1837."</i> Two ads directly above: <i>"NINIAN W. EDWARDS / ATTORNEY & COUNSELLOR AT LAW / Springfield – Illinois."</i></p><p>Lincoln had moved from New Salem Illinois to Springfield in 1836. He had first met fellow attorney Ninian W. Edwards when both were members of the Illinois State House of Representatives. Edwards married Elizabeth Todd in 1832 and Lincoln met Elizabeth's sister Mary Todd at the Edwards home where Mary had moved in 1839. On November 4 1842 Lincoln and Mary Todd were married in the Edwards mansion.</p><p>The <i>Sangamo Journal </i>started publishing in 1831 shortly after a young Lincoln settled in New Salem. The newspaper faithfully supported Abraham Lincoln and the Whig Party throughout many name changes: the <i>Illinois Journal</i> 1847 shortly after Lincoln left for Congress then the <i>Illinois State Journal</i>1855. As the Whig party broke up the newspaper supported the newly-formed Republican Party and Abraham Lincoln's rising political star.</p><p><b> Condition</b></p><p>Very fine with no visible tears.</p> books

First edition emblem book 20.5 cm x 16cm quarto; engraved allegorical frontispiece; title-page in black and red letter; vi; 404; iv 101 leaves of full-page engravings. Johann Christoph Weigel / Kupfferstechern in Nürnberg caption legends engraved or hand-written under each image. Errors of pagination: p. 188 is missing the page number; p. 192 reads as 912; p. 307 reads as 407; p. 318 reads as 218; p. 320 reads as 230; p. 374 reads as 274; p. 376 reads as 176; p. 378 reads as 278; p. 403 reads as 401.This copy is bound in contemporary quarter vellum on light-gray marbled paper boards with a hand-lettered spine. The title-page has been repaired and reinforced with heavier paper as are some of the introductory pages and plates. Plate No. 48 is printed on very heavy paper with a handwritten legend. The other plates have engraved legends. The edges of the first nine pages have been expertly reinforced. Apart from a crack in the uppermost front hinge this binding is in fair condition. Inside the back cover is a triangular stamp reading in part ZUR AUSFUR FREIGEGEBEN. Pencil annotations inside the front cover are a title index of the emblem plates and the calculus of the chronosticon.Extremely rare complete. Old repairs noted this is a good bright tight copy.
