LeClerc and on rear pastedown to the state of the engravings.

First Edition and second publication dealing with the comparative anatomy of the animals the chameleon the beaver the camel the bear and the gazelle. Perrault scientist and naturalist was the leader of a team of comparative anatomists called the Parisians that included Guichard-Joseph Duverney Jean Pecquet Moyse Charas and Philippe de la Hire. Their investigations began in June 1667 with a thresher shark and lion from the royal academy and went on to encompass forty-nine vertebrate species. The detailed reports and exact descriptions on these dissections were the first of a long series of anatomical descriptions which ultimately included those of twenty-five species of mammals seventeen birds five reptiles one amphibian and one fish. Perrault and the team of Parisians prided themselves on several discoveries and in the process debunked many popular myths attached to certain species such as the legend that salamanders live in fire or that chameleons subsist on air. The scientists also recorded how they obtained their results providing a glimpse of how such anatomical research was conducted in the seventeenth century. The work is illustrated beautifully with five large folding plates by the expert painter engraver and writer Sebastian Leclerc 1637-1714 four of which were engraved by Leclerc and one by the watercolor painter writer and printmaker Abraham Bosse c. 1604-1676. Very fine work; the large folding plates remain fresh and intact. No such detailed and exact descriptions and illustrations had been published before. It is hard to measure another such important addition to the anatomical study of animals. Frederic Leonard hardcover books

AZERBAIJAN. Priest Abraham ie. Qasha Auraham. i. e.
Autograph letter signed Priest Abraham evidently sent to Amherst professor William Seymour Tyler.
Ooroomiah Urmia West Azerbaijan Iran March 3rd 1837. 3.5 pages in autograph ink in English on an unlined foolscap folio 13.75 x 8.75 inches approx. 850 words no cover. Docketed in autograph ink "Letter from Priest Abraham to Prof. Tyler March 2 1837.

"Permit me to inform you that the year Mr. Perkins came to the county of Persia to the city of Tabreez; Mr. Perkins and Mr. Haas a German Preacher came to the country of Ooroomiah- first to Gavalan the village of Mar Yanna i.e Mar Yohanna who accompanied them to the city of Ooroomiah. They remained in the city a few days and then came to my village- viz. Geog Tapa which is four miles distant from the city and we accompanied them to Tabreez. There we read your language the English and Mr. Perkins read our language the Syriac about eight months. Then the Plague entered Tabreez and Mar Yohana and myself took leave of Mr. Perkins and returned to Ooroomiah. After about five months Mr. Perkins came again to Ooroomiah also Mrs. Perkins and Dr. Grant and Mrs. Grant."

A lengthy letter in English from one of the earliest Nestorian Christians to assist the American mission to Persia launched in November 1835 by the arrival in Urmia of "the Apostle to the Persians" Justin Perkins 1805-1869 with his wife Charlotte Bass Perkins missionary physician Asahel Grant 1807-1844 and Grant's wife Judith Campbell Grant.

Qasha Auraham this the Syriac rendering of Priest Abraham was a native of the village of Georgtapa just to the southeast of Urmia the nephew to village elder Muqdasi Mormezd who had suggested Auraham as the suitable local assistant for the missionary team; along with Mar Yohannon Auraham was instrumental in teaching the missionaries modern Syriac and in creating written vernacular Syriac.

The goal of the American Board of Missions with the Perkins mission had been the revival of the Assyrian Church of the East rather than planting an independent Protestant church and Perkins worked with Auraham and other local scholars to create a written modern Syriac in order to translate Nestorian religious texts out of ancient Syriac into the vernacular. Linguistics in that period was something of a rugged pursuit in Azerbaijan and Auraham was instrumental in recruiting a noted scholar to the translation mission as later reported by Perkins in Nestorian Biography:

"A few months after the missionaries arrived at Oroomiah Mr. Perkins sent priest Abraham of Geog Tapa and a Nestorian deacon to the mountains to obtain from thence an ecclesiastic to assist him in reducing the modern Syriac to writing and in the translation of the Scriptures. . . . There was real advantage in uniting the labors of a translator from the mountains with one on the Plain to harmonize so far as practicable the different dialects in the first reduction of the language to a written form. The messengers were charged to obtain 'the most learned' priest they could find. They boldly set off on foot—entered the formidable mountains and penetrated as far as Marbeshoo a large village in a secluded glen forty miles west of the Plain of Oroomiah. It was a fearful journey at that period. . . . At Marbeshoo they found priest Dunkha who had come down to that place from his more distant home on business. His fame as a very learned man was already known to the messengers and they at once engaged him to return with them to Oroomiah. A week after they left the missionary they introduced to his study priest Dunkha who though grotesquely clad in wild Koordish costume struck him as a very pleasant man."

The collaboration with Dunkha is alluded to here by Auraham:

"I would also inform you that we four viz. Mar Yohanna -- myself -- Joseph a brother of Mar Yohannan -- and little John the son of my uncle study your language. And Mr. Perkins and Mrs. Perkins and Mr. Grant and Mrs. Grant study our language the Syriac. We learn your language by little and little but Mr. Perkins learns our language very well. And I would further inform you that Mr. Perkins and Priest M'dunka i.e. Qasha Dunkha and myself are translating the Old and New Testament from the Syriac language into our dialect. Of the Old Testament we have translated the first book which as you know gives an account of the creation and three chapters of the second book. And of the New Testament we have translated the first fifteen chapters. If God smile upon us we shall be and by finish complete this good work."

Since the first mission press would not be operational in Urmia until the arrival of printer Edward Breath in 1840 this earliest translation of the New Testament from the Peshitta rather than the Greek would not be published until 1846. Professor William S. Tyler of Amherst seems the likeliest recipient of this missive given that he had both been a friend and fellow-student of Perkins at Andover Theological Seminary and had taught with Perkins at the Amherst Academy; presumably this firsthand account from Auraham was meant both as English practice and—with its mixture of exotic romance and good works to drum up for support for the mission among kindred scholars in America.

Some short closed tears along old folds but no loss; some light toning a little old creasing; in very good condition quite legible. With a preliminary typescript.

References:

American Sunday-School Union. The Nestorians of Persia: a history of the origin and progress of that people and of missionary labours among them. Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union 1848.

Campbell William S. editor. A Memoir of Mrs. Judith S. Extortion. Vermont. Morhouse Abraham.
The Writings of a Pretended Prophet In Six Letters Who Assumed The Title Of "A Faithful Servant Of Jesus Christ" Officially Commissioned By Almighty God to Demand and Receive Of Abraham Morhouse Esq. of Johnstown New-York Two Thousand Pounds; With Terrible Denunciations In Case Of Refusal. To which is Added His Recantation: or Four Letters Written By The Prophet After His Detection. Second Vermont Edition.
Rutland Vt. n. p. 1816. Second edition. A bit browned and worn; a very good copy. Stab-stitched unbound pamphlet stitching appears renewed at an early date 7.25 x 4.5 inches 12 pages untrimmed. The subject of the following letters has excited a very considerable degree of curiosity among the inhabitants of this place and its neighborhood; and as various representations respecting this business have been made the printer hereof solicited and obtained the privilege of the original papers with a view of introducing them for the perusal and patronage of the public. It is highly probable that the Prophet was a disciple of Brothers for like him her pretends an immediate commission from Almighty God although he does not claim a new relationship. . . . From motives of delicacy his name will be suppressed in the publication as it may injure the feelings of his family." An uncommon account of a curious attempt at divine extortion: beginning on August 5 1796 Abraham Morhouse began to receive letters from a self-styled prophet of God who wrote that he had been commanded by the Lord to order Morhouse to take "the exact sum of two thousand pounds current lawful money truly told and bear it hence to the bridge across the stream near the old potash works adjacent to town; cross the bridge and turn to the right hand and place the same down at the bottom of the bridge in plain open view." As the days drew on and Morhouse quite sensibly refused to make payment the letters became increasingly threatening "I tell thee that if thou now refusest to comply with what my Lord and master hath sent me unto thee to demand in this extraordinary way and manner that thou shalt so sure as thy soul liveth before many days be convinced of his power; for the one half of thy body and the one half of thy limbs and thy joints shall become as dead flesh whilst thou art alive: Wounds shall be grievous and past cure in thy secret parts; works shall gnaw thy flesh" until the erstwhile prophet was taken up and clapped into jail--at which point his correspondence to Morhouse takes on a rather more servile and flattering cast until after four days of incarceration Morhouse has asked the local magistrates for clemency and sent along a little money to help the scoundrel out as "the consequences to his family may be serious by deranging his pecuniary affairs which I fear are already in a state of embarrassment." Morhouse himself appears to have been something of a scoundrel; DeWitt Clinton wrote that he was "a complete villain who was pardoned when under sentence of death" and indeed he moved to Louisiana and became among other things a bigamist; he apparently died in 1812 and the reasons for the republication of this account in Vermont remain something of a mystery--though one suspects that perhaps the anonymous prophet had settled in Vermont. There do not appear to be any extant 18th century editions despite references in Sabin etc. and the 1802 Bennington edition is noted at UVM and AAS only on OCLC 12/2019. Sabin 105630; Shaw & Shoemaker 39883; McCorison 1891. An ex-library copy a surplus duplicate from the Library of Congress with their small ink stamps on the verso of the title page and small perforated stamp to the lower margin of the title. n. p.] unknown books

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
1864 Campaign Blames McClellan’s Failures on Lincoln Comparing the President’s Treatment of McClellan and Grant

"with the same determination to divide the country unless they can secure universal abolition we are exposed to the same dangers every day and God only knows in what unlucky hour our ruin may be consummated. Compare his policy with McClellan's expression of readiness to receive any State when its people offer to submit to the Union."

This Democratic Party campaign pamphlet quotes an April 1864 letter to argue that Lincoln gave Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant free rein to conduct the war after having interfered with and micromanaged McClellan's Peninsula Campaign in 1862. The publication also declared that Republicans were stained with "The Taint of Disunion" and quoted from Republican speeches and editorials to insist that the Democrats were the party of "UNION AND PEACE."
ABRAHAM LINCOLN.Printed Document. Democrat Campaign "Document No. 12" with headings "Lincoln's Treatment of Gen. Grant" "Mr. Lincoln's Treatment of Gen. McClellan" and "The Taint of Disunion." New York 1864. 8 pp. 5¾ x 8â… in.

Excerpts:

Lincoln to Grant April 30 1864

"I wish to express in this way my entire satisfaction with what you have done up to this time so far as I understand it. The particulars of your plans I neither know nor seek to know. You are vigilant and self-reliant; and pleased with this I wish not to obtrude any restrains or constraints upon you while I am very anxious that any real disaster or capture of our men in great numbers be avoided." p1/c1

"Such in brief are some of the most notable instances in which Mr. Lincoln interfered with General McClellan when he occupied a position similar to that held by General Grant. They reflect so severely upon the President that no attempt to gloss them over by his apparent subsequent repentance can disabuse the patriotic portion of the nation of the matured conviction that he is to be held responsible for the lack of decisive victories in Eastern Virginia. The blame must and will rest upon him to whom it belongs." p5/c2

"Having shown by copious extracts from the speeches of Abraham Lincoln W. H. Seward Wendell Phillips Wm. Lloyd Garrison and from the editorial writings of the Chicago Tribune and the N. Y. Tribune… that they were all original secessionists and disunion men we propose now to give the evidence that Mr. Lincoln himself has within the last three months been concerned in a movement to make peace with Jeff. Davis on terms involving the direct proposal to divide the Union and let the South go." p7/c2-p8/c1

"with the same determination to divide the country unless they can secure universal abolition we are exposed to the same dangers every day and God only knows in what unlucky hour our ruin may be consummated. Mark how Mr. Lincoln constantly keeps up the idea of negotiating only with Jefferson Davis. Why does he never address himself to the people or the States of the South. Compare his policy with McClellan's expression of readiness to receive any State when its people offer to submit to the Union." p8/c2

Historical Background

The 1864 presidential election pitted President Lincoln against his Democratic challenger General George B. McClellan. Although McClellan had been the commander of the Army of the Potomac and general-in-chief of the Union Army the Peace platform adopted by the Democratic National Convention in Chicago declared the war a failure. The party was bitterly divided between War Democrats who favored continuing the war to restore the Union while leaving slavery alone; moderate Peace Democrats who favored an armistice and a negotiated peace that would likely protect slavery in a reconstructed union and radical Peace Democrats who favored an immediate end to the war without securing Union victory. McClellan was a War Democrat but the platform was written by radical Peace Democrat Clement Vallandigham and Peace Democrat George H. Pendleton was nominated for vice president.

In 1864 Republicans created the National Union Party to attract War Democrats Unconditional Unionists and Unionist Party members who would not vote for the Republican Party though most state Republican parties did not change their name. President Abraham Lincoln won the nomination of the "National Union Party" at its Baltimore convention and won re-election with new running mate War Democrat Andrew Johnson.

Although Lincoln was convinced by August 1864 that he would not be reelected General William T. Sherman's capture of Atlanta in early September and General Philip Sheridan's successes in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia from August to October ensured his victory. Without the participation of the seceded states Lincoln and Johnson won 55 percent of the popular vote and an overwhelming 212-to-21 victory in the Electoral College. McClellan and Pendleton carried only Kentucky Delaware and McClellan's home state of New Jersey.
books
