"7 FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN was released as both a silent film and as a sound film with Vitaphone musical score sound effects and some dialogue sequences. The film received generally negative reviews including from such publications as THE NEW YORK TIMES VARIETY -- which called it 'An utterly moronic sound film . all hokum' -- and the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER in which Mildred Martin wrote 'after all the screams and creaks and thumps it reaches a somewhat tame conclusion .' Despite this it performed well at the box office. A companion Photoplay edition of the Merritt novel published by Grosset & Dunlap and featuring several stills from the film also sold extremely well. The sound version of the film is presumed lost . and the Vitaphone soundtrack for recording is also lost." - Wikipedia. A 2014 restored copy of the silent version is available on YouTube. 1975. Oil painting on canvas 17 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches the palate bright but carefully modulated. In a two-inch wide oak frame. Fine condition but for one tiny chip from a patch of impasto in a distant highrise. Walker 1921-1993 was a self-taught African-American artist born in Kentucky but brought up by relatives in East St. Louis which he featured in many of his works. During the phases of his career he adopted different stylistic approaches from descriptive and narrative to abstract and visionary. In this painting is one from the late period of his social commentary picturing drab and dilapidated houses viewed from the river hill-top church rising above them the river shore before them and exercising his visionary license the lofty buildings of St. Louis behind them. Bars protect the church and house windows and at the street curb sit three cars yellow red and white in brightly contrast to the drooping brown homes. Still he used color insistently to highlight and interpret life there tiny figures children men and women looking vital however divided from the urban center. During his life and after his work has been exhibited in a dozen shows in the region and elsewhere. A religious man he honestly expressed the essence of poverty and segregation as a natural artist sensitive to color and rhythm and lyricism rather than brutality. His major work Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1570 with later revisions and addendums was the first modern atlas. It was based on contemporary charts and maps and contained a collection of plates engraved by Frans Hagenberg in a uniform size and format. The Theatrum preceded the first atlas of Ortelius' good friend Gerardus Mercator. In fact popular sentimental legend has it that Mercator delayed publication of his own work so that his younger friend's would appear first. Although this simply isn't true Mercator wasn't ready the legendary cartographer did complement Ortelius for the "care and elegance" he had put into the Theatrum. unknown

Five of the six unauthorized booklets produced by Doreal printing Merritt's short fiction comprising THROUGH THE DRAGON GLASS RHYTHM OF THE SPHERES THE PEOPLE OF THE PIT THE WOMAN OF THE WOOD and THREE LINES OF OLD FRENCH. Each booklet has been sewn into a white paper wrapper with original wrapper retained with uncredited amateur but fairly well accomplished pen-and-ink illustrations in the style of Virgil Finlay and Hannes Bok on front cover and on inside rear cover; all are laid into a pictorial paper portfolio titled "Short Stories by A.
