Abraham Joshua Heschel January 11 1907 December 23 1972 was a Polish-born American rabbi and one of the leading Jewish theologians and Jewish philosophers of the 20th century. In late October 1938 when Heschel was living in a rented room in the home of a Jewish family in Frankfurt he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Poland. Six weeks before the German invasion of Poland Heschel left Warsaw for London with the help of Julian Morgenstern president of Hebrew Union College who had been working to obtain visas for Jewish scholars in Europe.Heschel believed the teachings of the Hebrew prophets were a clarion call for social action in the United States and worked for African Americans' civil rights and against the Vietnam War. He also specifically criticized what he called pan-halakhism or an exclusive focus upon religiously compatible behavior to the neglect of the non-legalistic dimension of rabbinic tradition. ‎Lincoln Abraham‎

‎Lincoln Strikes Back Against the Claim That He Would Intervene to Thwart a Corruption Investigation Defending Himself From the Presidential Aspirations of One of His Team of Rivals‎

‎An Important Communication in the Power Struggle Between President Abraham Lincoln and Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase For Control of the Republican Party in 1864 Lincoln defends his integrity to Chase and states that such attacks are against the public interest; He criticizes the performance of Chase’s men in the New York Customs House and seeks to replace them with his own men “This Mr. Bailey as I understand having been summoned as a witness to testify before a committee of the House of Representatives which purposed investigating the affairs of the New-York Custom-House took occasion to call on the Chairman in advance and to endeavor to smother the investigation saying among other things that whatever might be developed the President would take no action…The public interest can not fail to suffer in the hands of this irresponsible and unscrupulous man.†As early as December 1862 Republican leaders met to express dissatisfaction with the Lincoln administration and there was continuing organized criticism over the next year that caused Lincoln much grief. Then in 1864 there was a movement to replace Lincoln at the head of the Republican ticket which became strong enough that Lincoln despaired of his renomination. Lincoln put the blame squarely on Salmon Chase his Secretary of the Treasury whom he said was at the bottom “of all the mischief.†Hiram Barney was a Republican whose wife was the daughter of noted abolitionist Lewis Tappan who played a key role in the defense of the slaves who captured the Amistad. Lincoln was entertained by Barney while visiting New York for his Cooper Union speech in February 1860. After the speech it was Barney who took Lincoln out to dinner at the Athenaeum Club on Fifth Avenue. Barney was a political ally of Salmon P. Chase of Ohio who viewed Barney as his chief New York sponsor. However Barney supported Lincoln at the May 1860 Republican National Convention when he realized that Chase was out of the running for the presidential nomination. After Lincoln was nominated Barney traveled to Springfield to meet with Lincoln and consult regarding potential cabinet appointments. Barney enthusiastically supported the ticket and raised $35000 in New York for the national ticket. This would be the equivalent of over $1000000 today. Newly inaugurated President Lincoln appointed Chase Secretary of the Treasury. The greatest prize within the Treasury Department was the collectorship of the port of New York a place highly paid honorable and through its large number of employees a means of affecting the politics of New York City and State. Lincoln named Barney Collector of the Port of New York. Lincoln later related “You remember that when Hiram Barney was appointed at the beginning of this administration collector of the port of New York everybody supposed that he was Chase’s selection and nobody else’s. Now Barney was as much my choice as he was Chase’s; and when Chase Seward and myself standing round that table Barney’s appointment was decided upon I believe that I was the most gratified person then present.†But in office Barney was was a lightening rod for trouble. He was not politically active enough to suit Chase’s supporters was soon out of favor with the anti-Chase faction in New York that was loyal to William Seward appointed Democrats to posts in his department and was widely and credibly accused of corruption. Barney made noises about resigning but did not. Meanwhile in early 1864 Barney’s enemies spread stories that he was supporting Chase for President and opposing President Lincoln’s reelection. Moreover Lincoln had his eye on the New York customs house because he feared the embarrassing corruption scandals might hurt his chances in New York in the November election. At this time Barney had drifted into the Radical Republican orbit and some radicals sought to replace Lincoln at the top of the ticket with Chase’s at least tacit approval. So there was growing pressure on Lincoln to remove Barney but Chase came to his rescue both for political and personal reasons. On a personal level Barney had quietly and unbeknownst to Lincoln lent Chase a substantial sum of money so Chase was in his debt and Barney managed Chase’s New York real estate. He was too good a friend for Chase to sacrifice. Lincoln wrote Chase rather gently on January 11 1864: “I am receiving letters and dispatches indicating an expectation that Mr. Barney is to leave the Custom House at New York. Have you anything on the subject.†But Chase made Barney’s retention a question of personal honor. In response Chase defended Barney writing Lincoln: “Nothing at all except urgent representatives of the necessity of reform which do not at all impeach Mr. Barney in whose integrity I have undiminished confidence.†Chase also told Lincoln “I am to-day fifty-six years old. I have never consciously and deliberately injured one fellow man. It is too late for me to begin by sacrificing to clamor the reputation of a man whom I have known for more than twenty years and whose repute for honesty has been all that time unsullied. I shall not recommend the removal of Mr. Barney except upon such show of misconduct or incapacity as makes it my duty to do so. In such a case I shall not shrink from my duty.†This did not satisfy Lincoln who was fed up with Chase and his protege Barney. On February 13 1864 the President told Attorney General Edward Bates that he had decided Barney must go. Then he asked Secretary of State William Seward to find a diplomatic post for Barney which he did - the ambassadorship to Portugal. Barney’s position was additionally undermined by the actions of a Chase lieutenant Joshua S. Bailey special agent of the Treasury at New York who was supposed to investigate corruption in Barney’s customs operations but but who threw Lincoln under the bus telling the Congressional committee investigating him that “whatever might be developed the President would take no action.†Furious at the false and slanderous allegation that he tolerated corruption the day before he told Bates that Barney must go Lincoln wrote Chase directly. Autograph letter signed Executive Mansion Washington February 12 1864 to Chase trying to ease Barney out smoothly while . “My dear Sir: I have felt considerable anxiety concerning the Custom House at New-York. Mr. Barney has suffered no abatement of my confidence in his honor and integrity; and yet I am convinced that he has ceased to be master of his position. A man by the name of Bailey whom I am unconscious of ever having seen or even having heard of except in this connection expects to be and even now assumes to be Collector de facto while Mr. Barney remains nominally so. This Mr. Bailey as I understand having been summoned as a witness to testify before a committee of the House of Representatives which purposed investigating the affairs of the New-York Custom-House took occasion to call on the Chairman in advance and to endeavor to smother the investigation saying among other things that whatever might be developed the President would take no action and the committee would thereby be placed unpleasantly. The public interest can not fail to suffer in the hands of this irresponsible and unscrupulous man. I propose sending Mr. Barney Minister to Portugal as evidence of my continued confidence in him; and I further propose appointing ___ Collector of the Customs at New-York. I wrote the draft of this letter two weeks ago but delayed sending it for a reason which I will state when I see you. Yours truly A. Lincoln.†In his original retained draft Lincoln had indicated that he would appoint Preston King a former Republican U.S. Senator from New York who was then practicing law. Apparently Lincoln thought twice about naming specifically naming King or anyone else under the circumstances so left the name blank. And Lincoln was right about Bailey who it turned out was more corrupt than the people he was investigating; Bailey eventually fled to avoid prosecution for embezzlement. Chase replied to this letter the next day and sought to keep Lincoln from acting to replace Barney without his consent. “I was surprised and pained by your letter this morning. Misrepresentations I am sure must have been made to you about the New York Custom House. I regret that I was not earlier consulted in a matter which so deeply concerns this Department & still trust that before you take any definitive action you will confer with me fully on the subject. I shall be ready at any hour which may suit your convenience.†Lincoln later said that Chase had threatened to resign from the Secretaryship of the Treasury if Barney was removed and that he the President gave in once telling a Treasury aide on this subject “Well I backed down again.†Illness now interfered in the communication between Chase and Lincoln on the issue. Lincoln replied on February 13 that “On coming up from the reception I found your note of today. I am unwell even now and shall be worse this afternoon. If you please we will have an interview Monday.†In the midst of this patronage controversy Lincoln learned of the distribution of the “Pomeroy Circular†advocating Chase’s candidacy for President just 10 days after sending this letter. Chase offered to resign on February 22 and on February 29 the President wrote the Treasury Secretary: “Whether you shall remain at the head of the Treasury Department is a question which I will not allow myself to consider from any stand-point other than my judgment of the public service; and in that view I do not perceive occasion for a change.†Lincoln was not yet ready to let go of Chase. Lincoln again unsuccessfully pushed the Treasury Secretary to dismiss Barney on June 6 1864. He paid Chase a visit. The President opened the conversation on the persistent custom-house problem. After he gave his opinion an unfavorable one about Bailey he went on to speak of Barney’s replacement. Chase as usual was well prepared and his tone of voice was self-assured. He denied that Bailey had been so indiscreet to say what he was alleged to have said and he backed this statement up with a detailed account of Bailey’s activities. Chases’s biographer wrote: “This personal conference removed the difficulty for the time being; there is some reason to suppose that Chase again threatened to resign and that the President again gave way. In late June 1864 Chase sought to replace the well-respected John Cisco as Assistant Treasury Secretary for New York with a clearly unqualified candidate of suspect political loyalty. Lincoln fearing an open revolt among Republicans and voters urged Chase to select from among three alternative candidates. Chase rejected them and instead persuaded the incumbent to withdraw his resignation forcing the President’s hand. When Chase sought a meeting with Lincoln he was rebuffed “because the difficulty does not in the main part lie within the range of a conversation between you and me.†On June 29 Chase once again resigned and this time Lincoln accepted. “I thought I could not stand it any longer†the President confided to his secretary John Hay. With Chase gone from the cabinet and the new Treasury Secretary William P. Fessenden not committed to Barney’s retention Lincoln was free to make a change. As Barney explained to Chase the President requested his resignation “as a personal and political favor of great value and importance to him.†In late August Lincoln’s secretary John G. Nicolay was dispatched to New York to make the necessary job shifts. After a conference Barney submitted his resignation. Simeon Draper was named to replace Barney and he was in office until August 1965 when President Andrew Johnson named Preston King to replace him. Barney remained loyal to Chase - serving on a presidential organizing committee in 1868. He was at Chase’s side when he died. Lincoln realized that Chase had a constituency within his own party and rather than let a competent enemy battle with him for years going forward in December 1864 Lincoln kicked Chase upstairs and named him the 6th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This removed Chase from politics and at the same time placed a reliable and capable Republican in that office unknown‎

‎AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE JEWISH DISPLACED PERSONS CAMPS: THE LOST LEGACY OF THE SHEERITH HAPLETAH‎

‎Jerusalem World Congress Of Jewish Studies. 1982. Paperback. Holo15 . Offprint. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. Pages 187-196 ie. 10 pages ; 24 cm. Includes additional title page in Hebrew. Abraham J. Peck born in a DP camp in Landsberg Germany is a prolific Holocaust scholar professor and former advisor to Elie Wiesel. A brief history of the study of DP camps and of the lives of Holocaust survivors after the war. Precious little scholarly attention has been given to these areas. The reasons for such a state of affairs are numerous ranging from the previous general inattention paid to the Holocaust a phenomenon now corrected perhaps to excess to the problem especially in America of linguistic competency among graduate students and even accomplished scholars to the very real problem of artificial periodization in which the twin pillars of Holocaust and Redemption allow little room for self-standing research areas between them. Interestingly there appears to be a typo in this offprint. Division B of the Eighth World Congress of Jewish Studies was The History of the Jewish People. Division A was The Period of the Bible. Given the pagination and subject this was likely part of Division B. SUBJECTS : DP Camps Holocaust Jewish studies. One stain that does not affect text. Slight toning. Very minimal edgewear. Very good condition. Holo2-134-5 . ‎Heschel Abraham Joshua‎

‎ANALYSIS OF PIETY‎

‎Place Of Publication Not Identified. 1942. Paperback. Amr6 rab12 . Off Print. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 293-307 pages ; 24 cm. Reprinted from The Review of Religion in February 1942. In English. This is this first piece of scholarly writing that Abraham Joshua Heschel published in America as well as the first that he published in English seven years before his landmark publications of The Sabbath and Man Is Not Alone He also produced for private use at HUC by his students A Concise Dictionary of Hebrew Philosophical Terms in 1941 . Martin Luther King jr. and Heschel "initially bonded over the prophets. King was drawn to Heschels intimate knowledge of the topic Heschels masterwork in a body of masterworks was his book The Prophets and Heschel in turn admired Kings devotion to the Exodus story of Moses and the Israelites adapted to the narrative of the civil rights struggle in the 1950s and 60s.Heschel.can also be considered a kind of prophet himself. The main job of the prophets of the Bible after all is to hold their peoples feet to the fire. Moses railed at the weak and foolish Israelites who strayed from the path the minute their leader ascended to the mountaintop to commune with God. King fulminated against the war in Southeast Asia as well as against the injustices rampant in white American culture toward those whom it had enslaved for hundreds of years. Heschel supported both these causes incurring the disapproval of some Jewish leaders when he did not hesitate to vigorously excoriate U. S. Involvement in Vietnam preaching widely on the subject writing letters to presidents and being a spokesman for other religious leaders in meetings with high-level military strategists like Secretary of State Dean Rusk.Heschel like King had the charisma a prophet needs. He was impossible to dismiss even when his message stung. The consummate gadfly he shined a bright light on the ills of American society and also on those of American Judaism in the mid-20th century which he saw as stultifying airless soulless moribund. He was an outlier on one crisis we face today: how to make Judaism not only appealing but actually indispensable for Jews of future generations. His words were bracing and his exhortations powerful but rendered in such breathtakingly poetic language as well as expressed verbally in his disarming Polish accent they seem like a loving gift from a benevolent elder not a rebuke: He even warned warmly. He was a Jew who had suffered and seen too much suffering and who unlike the rest of us was capable of vision on a greater scale the prophetic scale. He knew what he was talking about and like King he believed people could rise up be their best selves and behave with righteousness and even with holiness. Heschel died in 1972 four years after his friend King was shot dead. Its a long time ago now. The prophets we have today dont speak in Kings mellifluous rhetoric or write in Heschels enchanting prose. Maybe we have murdered or hounded to death those with the capacity to make our hearts soar with their words of justice and compassion; weve gotten pretty cynical maybe too cynical for those kinds of voices" Sian Gibby in Tablet Magazine 2016 . He spent ten months lecturing on Jewish philosophy and Torah at Warsaw's Institute for Jewish Studies. Heschel is a widely read Jewish theologian whose most influential works include Man Is Not Alone. At the Vatican Council II as representative of American Jews Heschel persuaded the Roman Catholic Church to eliminate or modify passages in its liturgy that demeaned the Jews or referred to an expected conversion to Christianity. His theological works argued that religious experience is a fundamentally human impulse not just a Jewish one. He believed that no religious community could claim a monopoly on religious truth. ‎Idelsohn Abraham Z..‎

‎SEFER HA-SHIRIM : LE-GANE-YELADIM U-LE-VATE-SEFER `AMAMIYIM VE-TIKHONIM LE-BAYIT ULE-MAKHELAH‎

‎Berlin : Yudisher Farlag. 1922. Hardcover. Music2 208-210 . Revised edition this edition containing first publication of Hava Nagila anywhere. Original boards. 8vo. 168 pages. 23 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to Book of Songs : For Kindergartens and National Schools. Abraham Zevi Idelsohn was a prominent Jewish musicologist composer and cantor. He is perhaps best known for his lyrical contribution to the song Hava Nagila and for his 10 volume work "Thesaurus of Hebrew Oriental Melodies. " Wikipedia 2016 In the work for sale here Idelsohn analyzes various musical modes and intonations that are present in the wide spectrum of Jewish music. Thus the reader gains a greater understanding of how songs are adapted to the various Jewish cultures of the Diaspora. Hava Nagila Havah Nagilah Let us rejoice is an Israeli folk song traditionally sung at Jewish celebrations. It is perhaps the first modern Israeli folk song in the Hebrew language that has become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and bar/bat mitzvah celebrations. Abraham Zevi Idelsohn 18821938 a professor at Hebrew University began cataloging all known Jewish music and teaching classes in musical composition; one of his students was a promising cantorial student Moshe Nathanson who with the rest of his class was presented by the professor with a 19th-century slow melodious chant niggun or nigun and assigned to add rhythm and words to fashion a modern Hebrew song. There are competing claims regarding Hava Nagila's composer with both Idelsohn and Nathanson being suggested. The niggun he presented has been attributed to the Sadigurer Chasidim who lived in what is now Ukraine which uses the Phrygian dominant scale common in music of Transylvania. The commonly used text was probably refined by Idelsohn. In 1918 the song was one of the first songs designed to unite the early Yishuv Jewish enterprise that arose after the British victory in Palestine during World War I and the Balfour Declaration declaring a national Jewish homeland in the lands newly liberated from Turkey by the Allies and entrusted to Britain under the Treaty of Versailles. Although Psalm 118 verse 24 of the Hebrew Bible may have been a source for the text of Hava Nagila the expression of the song and its accompanying hora circle dance was entirely secular in its outlook Wikipedia 2016 . ‎Heclawa Abraham Lincoln Himmelwright‎

‎In The Heart Of The Bitter-Root Mountains The Story Of The Carlin Hunting Party September-December 1893‎

‎New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1895. First Edition. Very good in light green buckram cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and on the front board. A small octavo measuring 7 1/2 by 5 inches with very light rubbing to the cloth at the ends of the spine and foxing to the end sheets. Without a dust jacket. Written in pencil on the title page beneath the pseudonym Heclawa the following inscription appears: "From the author A. Lincoln Himmelwright" The upper edge of the title page bears the name of a previous owner in pencil. Also of interest facing page 172 is a photograph titled "The Return to Kendrick" of six horsemen surrounded by many men standing in front of a building. Someone has drawn in pencil an arrow connected to one of the horsemen to the author's name also written in pencil. Given how obscure the faces of anyone are in this photograph it would have been the author or someone with first hand knowledge to make this identification. 259 pages of text and appendices followed by a fold-out map of the "Clearwater Basin and adjoining Territory" of what is now Idaho and western Montana. Illustrated with a frontispiece eleven engravings eleven photographs and one line drawing. The author published this book using a pseudonym due to the controversy surrounding the discovery of this lost hunting party for leaving their cook George Colegate behind unable to walk and thinking he was close to death. The cook's body was located year later six miles from where he had been left to die. G. P. Putnam's Sons hardcover‎

‎Lincoln Abraham‎

‎As the Army of the Potomac Seeks to Outmaneuver Lee President Abraham Lincoln Writes to General George Meade Detailing a Plan to Help Sick and Wounded Soldiers‎

‎A rare war-date letter on engraved letterhead of the President to Major General Meade seeking Meade's approval for an arrangement that would lead to a donation of $200 per month for the needy soldiers In March 1864 Ulysses S. Grant was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln commander of the Union Armies. His headquarters would be with the Army of the Potomac commanded by Gen. George G. Meade. So though Meade would retain his post as leading that army Grant would be his superior in command the actions of Meade's army and the other Union forces. Grant developed a strategy to defeat the Confederacy by placing his army between the rebel capital of Richmond and Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. In his Spring offensive in 1864 Grant and Meade confronted Lee's army a number of times in very bloody engagements in which both sides suffered great losses. The Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania were essentially draws but resulted in huge casualties. After each battle Grant's armies moved southeast to try to create a wedge between Lee and Richmond but Lee's army successfully followed up the engagements by foiling that maneuver. The United States Sanitary Commission cared for the Union's sick and wounded soldiers and promoted clean and healthy conditions in army camps. It held fairs in certain large cities around the country mainly in 1863-4 to raise funds for its activities. Lincoln’s personal assistance to benefit these fairs is well known as he contributed notes documents and signatures to be sold or auctioned at the fairs. It turns out that he also intervened on behalf of others seeking to donate to the fairs. A little known aspect of the war relates to the material left behind by the soldiers who left a trail behind them as they moved. This included clothing and other rags that they no longer needed were useless in their present form or which they had to discard because the loads they carried in their backpacks were too heavy. One enterprising former soldier John C. Swift who had served in the Union Army from 1861-1863 wrote Lincoln on March 4 and March 9 1864 offering to pay $200 per month to the Sanitary Commission for the exclusive privilege of picking up clothing cast off by Meade's and Grant's army. This subject touched close to Lincoln's heart so he intervened directly Meade though it was during a period of intense conflict when tens of thousands were fighting and dying. But realizing that there might be logistic issues rather than insist Lincoln left the decision up to Meade even while indicating his own willingness. Autograph letter signed on engraved Executive Mansion letterhead Washington May 251864 to "Major General Meade Army of Potomac. Mr. J. C. Swift wishes a pass from me to follow your army to pick up rags and cast-off clothing. I will give it to him if you say so otherwise not. A. Lincoln." If Meade responded history does not take note of that response an unsurprising development given the hostilities in which his troops were involved at the time. It is noteworthy that knowing this Lincoln still chose to intervene on Swift's behalf a testament to Lincoln's interest in the well-fare of the soldiers cared for by the Sanitary Commission. Just days later the Battle of Cold Harbor would commence hardcover‎
