Scholar and philosopher descended on his father's side from Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezeritch and Abraham Joshua Heschel of Apta Opatow ; on his mother's side from Levi Isaac of Berdichev. After traditional Jewish studies he obtained rabbinic ordination semikhah . At the age of 20 he enrolled in the University of Berlin where he obtained his doctorate and at the Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums where he also taught Talmud and received a second liberal rabbinical ordination. In 1937 Martin Buber appointed him his successor at the central organization for Jewish adult education Mittelstelle fuer juedische Erwachsenenbildung and the Juedisches Lehrhaus at Frankfurt on the Main. Deported by the Nazis in October 1938 to Poland he taught for eight months at the Warsaw Institute of Jewish Studies. He immigrated to England where he established the Institute for Jewish Learning in London. In 1940 he was invited by Julian Morgenstern to teach at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati where he was associate professor of philosophy and rabbinics for five years. From 1945 he taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America JTS as professor of Jewish ethics and mysticism. In 1946 he married Sylvia Strauss who gave birth to Susannah Heschel who followed in the footsteps of her father as a scholar of Judaism. Heschel visited Israel and called for the renewal of the prophetic vision in Zion. He was a founder of the Social Democratic party in 1897 and after 1902 supported the Socialist party. Scheidemann�26 July 1865�Kassel�� 29 November 1939�Copenhagen �was a�German�Social Democratic�politician who proclaimed the Republic on 9 November 1918 and who became the second�Chancellor�of the�Weimar Republic. Beginning his career as a journalist Scheidemann became a Reichstag delegate for the Social Democrats in 1903 and soon rose to be one of the principal leaders of the party. During the First World War Scheidemann along with Friedrich Ebert was leader of the majority faction of the party which continued to vote for war credits limiting his opposition to the war to urging the negotiation of a compromise peace. When the Social Democrats were included in the cabinet for the first time in Prince Max of Baden's government in October 1918 Scheidemann entered the government as a minister without portfolio. Following the Kaiser's abdication on November 9 Prince Max resigned in favour of Ebert. Although the new government intended to support a constitutional monarchy probably in the person of one of the Kaiser's grandsons Scheidemann concerned in the face of a possible workers' revolution in Berlin unilaterally proclaimed the Republic from a balcony in the Reichstag building. The timing of this proclamation was probably due to the expectation of a similar proclamation of a "Workers' Republic" by the communists led by Karl Liebknecht which indeed followed a couple hours later. Scheidemann continued to serve as a leader in the Provisional Government which followed for the next several months and following the meeting of the National Assembly in Weimar in February 1919 Ebert was appointed Reich President and Scheidemann became Chancellor" Wikipedia 2010. Franzblau returned to New York in 1946 as professor of pastoral psychology and dean of the Jewish Institute of Religion school of education. In 1967 he was elected president of Dropsie College later University . During visits to the Soviet Union Hungary and Poland in 1954 and 1958 he obtained microfilms of Hebrew manuscripts in Leningrad and Moscow. He published a number of essays on Hebrew and Jewish studies in U. S. Universities. In 1957 he founded the National Association of Professors of Hebrew in American Universities. Among Katsh's books are Judaism in Islam 1954; reprinted in 1962 under the title Judaism and the Koran 1957 . He edited an anthology Bar Mitzvah Illustrated 1955 and the Warsaw ghetto diary by C. A. Scholar and philosopher descended on his father's side from Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezeritch and Abraham Joshua Heschel of Apta Opatow ; on his mother's side from Levi Isaac of Berdichev. After traditional Jewish studies he obtained rabbinic ordination semikhah . At the age of 20 he enrolled in the University of Berlin where he obtained his doctorate and at the Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums where he also taught Talmud and received a second liberal rabbinical ordination. In 1937 Martin Buber appointed him his successor at the central organization for Jewish adult education Mittelstelle fuer juedische Erwachsenenbildung and the Juedisches Lehrhaus at Frankfurt on the Main. Deported by the Nazis in October 1938 to Poland he taught for eight months at the Warsaw Institute of Jewish Studies. He immigrated to England where he established the Institute for Jewish Learning in London. In 1940 he was invited by Julian Morgenstern to teach at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati where he was associate professor of philosophy and rabbinics for five years. From 1945 he taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America JTS as professor of Jewish ethics and mysticism. In 1946 he married Sylvia Strauss who gave birth to Susannah Heschel who followed in the footsteps of her father as a scholar of Judaism. Heschel visited Israel and called for the renewal of the prophetic vision in Zion.
