Buzz Aldrin born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr.; January 20 1930 is an American engineer former astronaut and Command Pilot in the United States Air Force. As Lunar Module Pilot on the Apollo 11 mission he and mission commander Neil Armstrong were the first two humans to land on the Moon. Aldrin set foot on the Moon at 03:15:16 on July 21 1969 UTC 9 minutes after Armstrong first touched the surface. One of his first missions was on Gemini 12 where he successfully proved that extravehicular activity EVA could be performed by astronauts spending over 5 hours outside the craft thus achieving the goals of the Gemini program and paving the way for the Apollo program. Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon is the second of two autobiographical books written by Buzz Aldrin former Apollo 11 astronaut which author Ken Abraham produced with him. It is a follow-up to his previous autobiographical book Return to Earth. Both a first-person and firsthand account of landing on the Moon-a landing that came within seconds of failure and a description of Aldrin's personal trials and eventual triumphs on Earth--Magnificent Desolation describes a major descent on his part. From the glory of participating in the mission which fulfilled President John Kennedy's challenge to reach the moon before the decade ended Aldrin plummeted in his career with the Air Force having lost both his purpose and his direction while additionally becoming a public-relations tool for NASA and their seemingly relentless and endless world tour. hardcover‎

‎Aldrin Buzz with Abraham Ken‎

‎Magnificent Desolation; The Long Journey Home from the Moon‎

‎New York: Three Rivers Press 2010. First Paperback Edition stated. First printing stated. Trade paperback. Good. x 2 336 4 pages. Illustrations some in color. A Note About ShareSpace. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Inscribed on half-title by Aldrin. Buzz Aldrin born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. January 20 1930 is an American engineer and former astronaut. As the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11 he was one of the first two humans to land on the Moon and the second person to walk on it. He is a former U.S. Air Force officer with the Command Pilot rating. He also went into orbit on the Gemini 12 mission finally achieving the goals for EVA space-walk work that paved the way to the Moon and success for the Gemini program. In January 1963 Aldrin earned a Sc.D. degree in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he had been assigned as a graduate student under the auspices of the Air Force Institute of Technology since 1959. His doctoral thesis was Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous. On completion of his doctorate he was assigned to the Gemini Target Office of the Air Force Space Systems Division in Los Angeles before his selection as an astronaut. Aldrin was chosen for the crew of Apollo 11 and made the first lunar landing with commander Neil Armstrong on July 20 1969. Aldrin's first words on the Moon were "Beautiful view." Then in response to Armstrong asking "Isn't it magnificent" he responded "Magnificent desolation." He was also the first person to urinate while on the Moon. Over forty years ago Buzz Aldrin became the second human minutes after Neil Armstrong to set foot on a celestial body other than the Earth. The event remains one of mankind's greatest achievements and was witnessed by the largest worldwide television audience in history. In the years since millions more have had their Earth-centric perspective unalterably changed by the iconic photograph of Aldrin standing on the surface of the moon the blackness of space behind him and his fellow explorer and the Eagle reflected in his visor. Describing the alien world he was walking upon he uttered the words "magnificent desolation." And as the astronauts later sat in the Eagle waiting to begin their journey back home knowing that they were doomed unless every system and part on board worked flawlessly it was Aldrin who responded to Mission Control's clearance to take off with the quip "Roger. Understand. We're number one on the runway." The flight of Apollo 11 made Aldrin one of the most famous persons on our planet yet few people know the rest of this true American hero's story. In Magnificent Desolation Aldrin not only gives us a harrowing first-person account of the lunar landing that came within seconds of failure and the ultimate insider's view of life as one of the superstars of America's space program he also opens up with remarkable candor about his more personal trials-and eventual triumphs-back on Earth. From the glory of being part of the mission that fulfilled President Kennedy's challenge to reach the moon before the decade was out Aldrin returned home to an Air Force career stripped of purpose or direction other than as a public relations tool that NASA put to relentless use in a seemingly nonstop world tour. The twin demons of depression and alcoholism emerged-the first of which Aldrin confronted early and publicly and the second of which he met with denial until it nearly killed him. He burned through two marriages his Air Force career came to an inglorious end and he found himself selling cars for a living when he wasn't drunkenly wrecking them. Redemption came when he finally embraced sobriety gained the love of a woman Lois who would become the great joy of his life and dedicated himself to being a tireless advocate for the future of space exploration-not only as a scientific endeavor but also as a thriving commercial enterprise. These days Buzz Aldrin is enjoying life with an enthusiasm that reminds us how far it is possible for a person to travel literally and figuratively. As an adventure story a searing memoir of self-destruction and self-renewal and as a visionary rallying cry to once again set our course for Mars and beyond Magnificent Desolation is the thoroughly human story of a genuine hero. ‎Never Again : The Threat of the New Anti-Semitism‎

‎HarperSanFrancisco 2003. Reprint. Sixth printing. Hardcover. Very good in very good dust jacket. Signed by author. xii 305 p. Source Notes. Index. FOreworc by Elie Wiesel. The ongoing war on terror instability in the Middle East and a faltering world economy are capturing headlines everywhere. But through it all runs a disturbing current of which many people are only dimly aware. Anti-Semitism which had been on the decline worldwide since the end of World War II has over the past few years made a perilous return. How could the twenty-first century--the new millennium launched with such optimism just a few short years ago--have so quickly been marred by the emergence of age-old hatreds now armed with the powers of global terrorism As national director of the Anti-Defamation League Abraham H. Foxman fights against the menace of intolerance every day. As a result of the disturbing events of the last few years he is convinced that we currently face as great a threat to the safety and security of the Jewish people as we faced in the 1930s. Foxman writes: "Within living memory we' ve seen what can happen when a nation or a continent experiences an unrestrained outbreak of anti-Semitism. The Jews of the world--and all people of goodwill who share their desire for a just and free society--learned a series of critical lessons from the tragic history of the twentieth century. Today we understand how important it is to recognize the emergence of new forms of anti-Semitism so that we can warn the world and stave off the worst effects. " Anti-Semitism remains a pernicious form of ethnic and religious intolerance with consequences for all of humankind. In communities from the United States to the Middle East Europe to South Africa and Latin America Jews are being persecuted in old and new ways. Exploring the history of anti-Semitismand providing the first comprehensive examination of the new rampant anti-Jewish sentiment worldwide "Never Again offers a crucial discussion of the steps that must be taken to prevent this century from witnessing a replay of the horrors of the last. The author was the national dir. HarperSanFrancisco hardcover‎

‎Handbook of the March of the Living on Yom Hashoah April 19 2004 Nisan 28 5764‎

‎March for the Living 2004. Presumed first edition/first printing thus. Wraps. Very good. 24 p. Includes illustrations. From Wikipedia: "The March of the Living is an annual educational program which brings students from around the world to Poland where they explore the remnants of the Holocaust. On Holocaust Memorial Day Yom HaShoah thousands of participants march silently from Auschwitz to Birkenau the largest Nazi concentration camp complex built during World War II. The program was established in 1988 and takes place annually for two weeks around April and May immediately following Passover. Marchers come from countries as diverse as Panama Turkey Estonia and New Zealand. At the climax of the program is the March which is designed to contrast with the death marches which occurred towards the end of World War II. When Nazi Germany withdrew its soldiers from forced-labour camps inmates usually already starving and stricken by oppressive work were forced to march hundreds of miles further west while those who lagged behind or fell were shot. The March of the Living in contrast to the death marches serves to illustrate the continued existence of world Jewry despite Nazi Germany's attempts at their obliteration. After spending a week in Poland visiting other sites of Nazi Germany's persecution and former sites of Jewish life and culture many of the participants in the March also travel on to Israel where they observe Yom Hazikaron Israel's Remembrance Day and celebrate Yom Haatzmaut Israel's Independence Day. The March of the Living is mainly aimed at Jewish high school students and its goals are both universal fighting indifference racism and injustice and particular opposing anti-semitism and strengthening their sense of Jewish identity. A key element of the program is the participation of Holocaust survivors who share the memory of their war-time experiences with the students while they are still well enough to participate in this challenging two week trip of the young. Though the vast majority of participants in the March of the Living are Jewish high school students from different countries including Israel there are many non-Jewish groups in attendance along with adult groups such as the Polish Friends of Israel Japan's Bridges for Peace and others. In recent years the March of the Living MOTL has attempted to broaden its focus from only concentrating on the Holocaust and include other program content in the Poland portion of the trip. These elements include: celebrating Jewish life before the war establishing dialogue with Polish students meeting with Polish Righteous among the Nations and connecting with the contemporary Polish Jewish community. The March of Remembrance and Hope MRH is a program designed for university/college students of all religions and backgrounds. This program founded in 2001 takes place in May and in recent years has included a 2 day trip to Germany before the 5 day Poland portion of the trip. The purpose of the March of Remembrance and Hope is to teach students of various religious and ethnic backgrounds about the dangers of intolerance through the study of the Holocaust and other World War II genocides and to promote better relations among people of diverse cultures. Holocaust survivors also participate in the March of Remembrance and Hope program. Since its inception students of a wide variety of religions and ethnicities have taken part." Revusky was born in Smela Ukraine but spent his childhood years in Reḥ ovot Israel which his parents helped to found. The family returned to Russia for reasons of health and Abraham was educated in Russia and Austria. He returned to Russia before World War I and joined the Po'alei Zion party contributing to both the Russian and Yiddish press. During the Revolution of 1917 18 he was an administrative member of the Jewish community in Odessa. He became associated with Ukrainian nationalist circles and at the beginning of 1919 for a short while he held the position of minister for Jewish affairs in the nationalist Ukrainian government. He resigned from this position as a result of attacks perpetrated against the Jews by units of the Ukrainian army. His memoirs of this period In di Shvere Teg oyf Ukraine 1924 provide a historical document of much interest. From 1920 to 1921 his party sent him to Palestine to fight the anti-Zionist trends. He participated in the founding conference of the Histadrut. In the summer of 1921 he was expelled from the country as a result of the publication of his pamphlet "From Balfour to Samuel " in which he voiced what was considered to be destructive criticism of the Mandatory government. He left for Western Europe and settled in Berlin and in 1924 he went to the United States. After some hesitation he joined the "Rightist Po'alei Zion " contributing to Zionist propaganda activities in both Yiddish and English. His principal work Jews in Palestine was published in various editions and in several languages the last in English in 1947. Revusky died in New York." The Vanguard press hardcover‎

‎International Arrangements for Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing‎

‎Cambridge MA: Ballinger Publishing Company 1977. Presumed first edition/first printing. Hardcover. Very good in good dust jacket. Pencil erasure residue on fep. xx 251 14 p. Figures. Tables. References. Index. Information about the Contributors. In July 1975 the Canadian and American Pugwash groups held an information meeting at Pugwash Nova Scotia to discuss arms control implicaiton of the widening use of nuclear power reactors. It was recommended that an International Pugwash Symposium be organized to address this topic in a systematic and comprehensive way. This book is a report of that landmark symposium. This was published for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. From Wikipedia: "Abram Chayes July 18 1922-April 16 2000 was an American scholar of international law closely associated with the administration of John F. Kennedy. He is best known for his legal process approach to international law which attempted to provide a new less formalistic way of understanding international law and how it might further develop. By focusing on how international legal rules are actually used by foreign policy decision-makers Chayes sought to study international law not within a vacuum of legal rules and procedures but in a dynamic political environment. After law school Chayes was Legal Advisor to Governor Chester Bowles of Connecticut from 1949 to 1951 and then served in Washington D.C. as Associate General Counsel of the President's Materials Policy Commission in 1951. He clerked for Justice Felix Frankfurter of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1951 to 1952 and practiced law privately with Covington & Burling in Washington D.C. from 1952 to 1955. In 1955 he joined the faculty at Harvard Law School as an associate professor and began teaching courses in constitutional law and international law. In the late 1950s Chayes was among the original members of a group of Harvard faculty members who worked on the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy. He led the team that drafted the 1960 Democratic Convention platform and was one of Kennedy's principal issues advisers during the campaign. When Kennedy was elected he worked as Legal Adviser to the State Department. Chayes played an important role in a number of major crises including the Berlin Crisis of 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. He also worked on the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 banning atmospheric nuclear tests. In 1964 Chayes worked at the law firm of Ginsburg & Feldman in Washington D.C. before returning to Harvard Law School in 1965 where in 1976 he became the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law. Chayes developed a new international law course at Harvard and co-authored a widely used book International Legal Process. He also taught civil procedure and authored a widely cited article in the Harvard Law Review on the legal remedies and the difficulty of dealing with domestic social issues legally. He became professor emeritus in 1993 but continued to teach until incapacitated by complications from pancreatic cancer. After leaving the Kennedy administration Chayes remained politically active. He worked on the 1968 presidential campaign of Senator Robert F. Kennedy wrote articles on nuclear arms control co-authored a book with Jerome Wiesner President Kennedy's Science Adviser on Anti-Ballistic Missiles and strategic policy and advised Democratic members of the Senate in the debate in the early 1970s over ABM deployment he was a strong supporter of the ABM Treaty of 1972. In 1972 Chayes advised the presidential campaign of George McGovern on foreign policy matters and in 1976 was a foreign policy adviser to the presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter. In the 1980s Chayes argued on behalf of the Government of Nicaragua against the United States in the seminal International Court of Justice ICJ case Nicaragua v. United States. The ICJ ruled that the U.S. was guilty of "unlawful use of force" when it mined Nicaragua's harbors. Chayes also wrote articles arguing that the Reagan Administration was barred from testing and deployment of the Strategic Defense Initiative SDI or "Star Wars" under the 1972 ABM Treaty."
