The central image is the goddess Columbia wearing a draped American flag flanked by bald eagle and Union shield. Behind her is a steam ship and the artist's rendition of what the then-uncompleted Capitol building was expected to look like. Surrounding Columbia is an ornate frame made up of portraits of the presidents of the United States from 1789-1861—including a beardless Abraham Lincoln: George Washington John Adams Thomas Jefferson James Madison James Monroe John Quincy Adams Andrew Jackson Martin Van Buren William H. Harrison John Tyler James K. Polk Zachary Taylor Millard Fillmore Franklin Pierce James Buchanan and Abraham Lincoln.<p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>Erin Mast curator of "My Abraham Lincoln" a 2009 exhibition at President Lincoln's Cottage Museum noted that the print "both commemorates Lincoln's election and recognizes the challenges and opportunities facing the 16th president. The 16 presidential portraits encircle symbols of the republic at a time when a divided nation faced secession and civil war. In the center Columbia holds a shield and liberty cap the latter being a symbol both of revolution and of freed slaves. A bald eagle grasps arrows and an olive branch and carries a ribbon with the motto 'E Pluribus Unum.' The Capitol dome shown completed at a time when it was still unfinished symbolizes the founding of the democratic republic while a steamship symbolizes development and progress. The allegorical images relate to concepts that Lincoln expressed in his first inaugural address; that seceding and breaking the Constitution would be a step backward not forward and violates the very principles of the Union a Union which is 'older than the Constitution.' The three Ancient Roman provinces organised by the emperor Augustus of Hispania Citerior et Tarraconensis Hispania Baetica and Lusitania Hispania are shown on the map. Northern tip of Africa 'Hispania Transfretana Sive Tingitana Qua et Mauritania' pictured also. Relief shown pictorially with rivers mountains and significant towns and cities depicted. Large decorative cartouche with finely detailed Classical allusions in lower right section of map contains an inset box showing the coastal area around 'Gades' Cadiz. Cartouche also lists numerous place names of uncertain location in Latin. Bar-scales within cartouche in top right corner of the map. Decorative title cartouche in lower left corner. Three ships are also pictured suggesting the region's maritime importance. 'Mare Mediterraneum Internum' and 'Ocean Atlanticus Quod et Mare Hesperium Vespertinum Occiduum et Externum' are also listed. Abraham Goos 1590 – c. 1643 was a Dutch cartographer publisher and engraver. He made globes maps of North America a comprehensive map of European coastlines and the first printed Hebrew language map of The Holy Land. His first teacher was Jodocus Hondius 1563–1612 a renowned map-maker whose son-in-law was Johannes Janssonius. After Hondius died his son-in-law Jan Janssonius took over Hondius's business and continued the partnership with Goos. One of Hondius' specialties was the manufacture of globes and Goos and Janssonius continued this regularly modifying them as more geographical information became available. In 1616 he published Nieuw Nederlandtsch Caertboeck an atlas of the Seventeen Provinces in 23 maps and one of the first atlases of the Netherlands; Johannes Janssonius 1588-1664 was a renowned geographer and publisher of the seventeenth century when the Dutch dominated map publishing in Europe. unknown

Beautifully unusual and richly decorated map of the Ancient World based upon the work of Claudius Ptolemy from Ortelius' Parergon 'Supplement'. The depicted land masses of Europe Africa and western Asia are largely in their modern configurations although the place names on the map are based upon Ptolemy. The southern portion of Africa is missing and China is not included on the map. A small number of cities including Hispalis Seville Lutetia Paris Rome Byzantium Istanbul Hierusalem Jerusalem Alexandria and Memphis are identified. Relief shown pictorially. The mythical Luna Montes Mountains of the Moon - the fabled source of the Nile - can be seen in the southern half of Africa. Madagascar is also included. The climate zones are shown as 'Zona frigida et inhabitablis' 'Zona temperata et habitabilis' and 'Zona torrida et ob Solis nimium fervorem a veteribus inhabitabilis credita.' The tropics and Arctic and Antarctic circles are also shown. The 'Zona frigida' lying above the Arctic Circle and the region lying at the Equator are described as being inhospitable. The border of the globe carries longitudinal and latitudinal information. The outer areas of the map are decoratively patterned and there is one inset roundel map in each corner showing the different continents depicting in clockwise order Europe Asia Africa and the Americas. Ortelius' characteristic strapwork design ornaments the title cartouche above the globe as it does the cartouche seen beneath it. It bears the inscription: "En Spectator Pilae Totius Terrae Ichnographiam at Veteribus Usque ad Annum Salutis Nonagesimum Secundum Supra Milles Quadrigent. Cognitae Tantum Geographiam." Immediately underneath the illustrated landmass is a further cartouche similarly ornamented decorated with two lion heads and bearing an oval inset statement of responsibility in Latin script. The Parergon was conceived initially as a supplement to Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Theatre of the World. The work a vast and finely researched index of the Classical world was accompanied by a number of ancient world maps. Unlike the maps of the Theatrum the majority of which were reductions of earlier maps the maps of the Parergon were researched and drawn by Ortelius himself. A pair of stunning maps from the late 16th Century Theatrum Orbis Terrarum showing the northwest Pacific coast of Mexico and the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean. All these regions were first explored and settled by the Spanish in the 1490s and still under Madrid's control when Ortelius produced his renowned cartographic work. Among the settlements shown on the Mexican map are Culiacan and the Spanish settlement of Villa S. Michaelis with its cathedral clearly marked. Reliefs are depicted pictorially with mountains and rivers identified and a large forest/grove also shown. A large but narrow island lies just off the coast. Large decorative cartouche with Ortelius's characteristic ornamental straps lies of the coast with explanatory annotations in Latin text. Smaller title cartouche in the top right corner of map also. The map below illustrates the Greater Antilles including the Cayman Magnus and the Caymanes Cuba 'Aity sive Spaniola' Hispaniola Jamaica the Bahamas 'St. Jois Insula' St. Johns Virgin Islands and the Barbados Islands all in fine detail. Havana is clearly identified along with other major settlements throughout the islands. St. Lucia is just about included lying within the map border. The section of South Florida also shows suggestion of the Florida Keys which was uncommon for this era. To the west Yucatan can be seen breaching the map boundary. A decorative title cartouche beautifully adorned with two birds lies at the lower part of the map. Unlike the waters of the Mexican map above it the seas of this map appear choppy for the two ships depicted. Valuably laden Spanish galleons would have traversed these stretches of water bringing the riches of the New World across the Atlantic to Spain. Making use of a knowledge of Greek Mythology two particularly perilous areas are designated: amid the Bahamas a treacherous stretch of water is labelled 'Carybdis Magna' while off to the west of Hispaniola lies the dangerous 'Scyila Magna.' An interesting cartographic error is evident on both maps: the Tropic of Cancer is mislabeled as the southern 'Tropicus Capricorni'.
