Laboulaye Edward Edouard Rene de Edouard Rene Lefebvre de Laboulaye / Lincoln Abraham
The Election of the President of the United States Professor Laboulaye the great friend of America on the Presidential Election.
1864. Washington Printed for the Union Congressional Committee 1864. 8°. 14 pages. Softcover / Original Pamphlet. Original brochure. Some foxing. Unopened. Extremely RARE ! "To vote for Lincoln is to vote for Union and for Liberty". This is how this pamphlet ends in which Laboulaye urges the americans to vote for Lincoln instead for McClellan. But Laboulaye was even more important to the american people in his overall favour of this country as a leading role for freedom and future. He suggested the present by France which was later erected as the "Statue of Liberty" "In the summer of 1865 a group of Frenchmen were gathered together one evening at the home of the well-known author Edouard Rene de Laboulaye in the village of Glavingny a suburb of Paris. Among those present were Oscar and Edmond de Lafayette grandsons of the Marquis d' Lafayette Masonic brother of George Washington; Henri Martin the noted historian and French Mason; and a young artist from Colmar in French later German Alsace by the name of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi who at the time was engaged in making a bust of Laboulaye called by one biographer "America's most ardent admirer in France." Laboulaye told the group that it would be a splendid gesture on the part of all liberty-loving Frenchmen to acknowledge their friendship to America by presenting a fitting memorial. Some have speculated that he had a second motive in mind to call attention to the contrast between the American way of life with its freedoms and that of the French under the repressive Second Empire. The 31-year-old Bartholdi became imbued with the idea and also the challenge it presented to his artistic talent. But the proposal lay dormant during the autocratic rule of Napoleon III and throughout the destructive years of the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871 Laboulaye the Brother Lafayette with their cousin the Marquis de Noailles and the Marquis de Rochambeau along with Henri Martin revived the plan for the as yet unnamed memorial. They suggested that Bartholdi visit America and make arrangements for the presentation of the monument on July 4 1876 the Centenary of the Declaration of Independence. Armed with letters of introduction and full of high hopes Bartholdi sailed for America although it is said that he did not have even a rough drawing of the proposed monument. Two weeks later while standing on the deck of the ship Pereire steaming up Lower New York Bay he caught a vision of a magnificent goddess holding aloft a torch in one hand and welcoming all visitors to the land of freedom and opportunity. Quickly obtaining paper and brush Bartholdi sketched in water-color the idea of the Statue of Liberty substantially as it appears today. It was his thought to have this symbolic structure tower over the steeple of Trinity Church then the tallest building on the New York skyline. He wrote to Laboulaye "these outlines may well aim beyond the mere monument at a work of great moral value." MasonicWorld - By R. W. Robert C. Singer Édouard René Lefèbvre de Laboulaye French pronunciation: edwa ne lfv d labul 18 January 1811 – 25 May 1883 was a French jurist poet author and anti-slavery activist. In 1865 he originated the idea of a monument presented by the French people to the United States that resulted in the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. He got the idea thinking that this would help strengthen their relationship with the United States. Laboulaye was received at the bar in 1842 and was chosen professor of comparative law at the Collège de France in 1849. Following the Paris Commune of 1870 he was elected to the national assembly representing the departement of the Seine. As secretary of the committee of thirty on the constitution he was effective in combatting the Monarchists in establishing the Third Republic. In 1875 he was elected a life senator and in 1876 he was appointed administrator of the Collège de France resuming his lectures on comparative legislation in 1877. Laboulaye was also chairman of the French Anti-Slavery Society. Laboulaye was president of the Société d'économie politique. Always a careful observer of the politics of the United States and an admirer of its constitution he wrote a three-volume work on the political history of the United States and published it in Paris during the height of the politically repressed Second Empire. During the American Civil War he was a zealous advocate of the Union cause and the abolition of slavery publishing histories of the cultural connections of the two nations. At the war's conclusion in 1865 he became president of the French Emancipation Committee that aided newly freed slaves in the U.S. The same year he had the idea of presenting a statue representing liberty as a gift to the United States a symbol for ideas suppressed by Napoleon III. The sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi one of Laboulaye's friends turned the idea into reality. Wikipedia paperback

Aristotle Edel Abraham
Aristotle and His Philosophy.
1982. Chapel Hill The University of North Carolina 1982. 235 cm x 16 cm. XII 479 pages. Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Former library copy with library-stamp. Marker signs on edges. Includes for example the following essays: Aristotle's Works and the Problem of Interpretation / The Character of Aristotle's Thought and His Philosophic Method / Explanation and the Teleological Model / Methodological Aspects of Psychology etc etc. Aristotle 384 – 322 BC was a Greek philosopher and scientist born in the Macedonian city of Stagira Chalkidice on the northern periphery of Classical Greece. His father Nicomachus died when Aristotle was a child whereafter Proxenus of Atarneus became his guardian. At eighteen he joined Plato's Academy in Athens and remained there until the age of thirty-seven c. 347 BC. His writings cover many subjects – including physics biology zoology metaphysics logic ethics aesthetics poetry theater music rhetoric linguistics politics and government – and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. Shortly after Plato died Aristotle left Athens and at the request of Philip of Macedon tutored Alexander the Great starting from 343 BC. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica "Aristotle was the first genuine scientist in history . and every scientist is in his debt." Teaching Alexander the Great gave Aristotle many opportunities and an abundance of supplies. He established a library in the Lyceum which aided in the production of many of his hundreds of books. The fact that Aristotle was a pupil of Plato contributed to his former views of Platonism but following Plato's death Aristotle immersed himself in empirical studies and shifted from Platonism to empiricism. He believed all peoples' concepts and all of their knowledge was ultimately based on perception. Aristotle's views on natural sciences represent the groundwork underlying many of his works. Aristotle's views on physical science profoundly shaped medieval scholarship. Their influence extended into the Renaissance and were not replaced systematically until the Enlightenment and theories such as classical mechanics. Some of Aristotle's zoological observations such as on the hectocotyl reproductive arm of the octopus were not confirmed or refuted until the 19th century. His works contain the earliest known formal study of logic which was incorporated in the late 19th century into modern formal logic. In metaphysics Aristotelianism profoundly influenced Judeo-Islamic philosophical and theological thought during the Middle Ages and continues to influence Christian theology especially the scholastic tradition of the Catholic Church. Aristotle was well known among medieval Muslim intellectuals and revered as "The First Teacher". His ethics though always influential gained renewed interest with the modern advent of virtue ethics. All aspects of Aristotle's philosophy continue to be the object of active academic study today. Though Aristotle wrote many elegant treatises and dialogues – Cicero described his literary style as "a river of gold" – it is thought that only around a third of his original output has survived. Extortion. Vermont. Morhouse Abraham.
The Writings of a Pretended Prophet In Six Letters Who Assumed The Title Of "A Faithful Servant Of Jesus Christ" Officially Commissioned By Almighty God to Demand and Receive Of Abraham Morhouse Esq. of Johnstown New-York Two Thousand Pounds; With Terrible Denunciations In Case Of Refusal. To which is Added His Recantation: or Four Letters Written By The Prophet After His Detection. Second Vermont Edition.
Rutland Vt. n. p. 1816. Second edition. A bit browned and worn; a very good copy. Stab-stitched unbound pamphlet stitching appears renewed at an early date 7.25 x 4.5 inches 12 pages untrimmed. The subject of the following letters has excited a very considerable degree of curiosity among the inhabitants of this place and its neighborhood; and as various representations respecting this business have been made the printer hereof solicited and obtained the privilege of the original papers with a view of introducing them for the perusal and patronage of the public. It is highly probable that the Prophet was a disciple of Brothers for like him her pretends an immediate commission from Almighty God although he does not claim a new relationship. . . . From motives of delicacy his name will be suppressed in the publication as it may injure the feelings of his family." An uncommon account of a curious attempt at divine extortion: beginning on August 5 1796 Abraham Morhouse began to receive letters from a self-styled prophet of God who wrote that he had been commanded by the Lord to order Morhouse to take "the exact sum of two thousand pounds current lawful money truly told and bear it hence to the bridge across the stream near the old potash works adjacent to town; cross the bridge and turn to the right hand and place the same down at the bottom of the bridge in plain open view." As the days drew on and Morhouse quite sensibly refused to make payment the letters became increasingly threatening "I tell thee that if thou now refusest to comply with what my Lord and master hath sent me unto thee to demand in this extraordinary way and manner that thou shalt so sure as thy soul liveth before many days be convinced of his power; for the one half of thy body and the one half of thy limbs and thy joints shall become as dead flesh whilst thou art alive: Wounds shall be grievous and past cure in thy secret parts; works shall gnaw thy flesh" until the erstwhile prophet was taken up and clapped into jail--at which point his correspondence to Morhouse takes on a rather more servile and flattering cast until after four days of incarceration Morhouse has asked the local magistrates for clemency and sent along a little money to help the scoundrel out as "the consequences to his family may be serious by deranging his pecuniary affairs which I fear are already in a state of embarrassment." Morhouse himself appears to have been something of a scoundrel; DeWitt Clinton wrote that he was "a complete villain who was pardoned when under sentence of death" and indeed he moved to Louisiana and became among other things a bigamist; he apparently died in 1812 and the reasons for the republication of this account in Vermont remain something of a mystery--though one suspects that perhaps the anonymous prophet had settled in Vermont. There do not appear to be any extant 18th century editions despite references in Sabin etc. and the 1802 Bennington edition is noted at UVM and AAS only on OCLC 12/2019. Sabin 105630; Shaw & Shoemaker 39883; McCorison 1891. An ex-library copy a surplus duplicate from the Library of Congress with their small ink stamps on the verso of the title page and small perforated stamp to the lower margin of the title. n. p.] unknown

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Illustrator Frank Leslie Publishes Fanciful Grand Reception of Civil War Notables as a Subscription Premium
<p>Frank Leslie published this print as a premium for his new family magazine <i>Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner</i> and copyrighted it on April 8 1865 just a week before Lincoln's death. The image created by engraver Henry B. Major and lithographer Joseph Knapp portrays Lincoln flanked by the First Lady and Vice President Andrew Johnson greeting Julia Dent Grant wife of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant who stands nearby.</p><p>According to a notice printed at the bottom right corner "<i>Every Person who pays Ten Cents each for numbers 1 and 2 of Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner The New Family Paper is entitled to a copy of this PLATE without extra charge</i>" or individuals could purchase the print for $3.</p> <b>ABRAHAM LINCOLN.</b>Lithograph. "Grand Reception of the Notabilities of the Nation at the White House 1865" New York: Frank Leslie April 1865. 1 p. 19 x 23¾ in.<p><br /></p><p>In the first issue of <i>The Chimney Corner</i> Leslie described the "Grand Reception" image as "the most costly gift plate ever presented by any publisher in the United States having been produced at an expense of $10000."</p><p>"Every family should possess this truly national picture and carefully preserve it" Leslie continued "as it will transmit to future generations the men who have restored our great national unity. It is especially valuable as it contains an excellent likeness of our late lamented President introducing General Grant and his wife to Mrs. Lincoln." The picture contains "nearly 100 portraits of our most celebrated Generals Statesmen and Civilians also of many of our most distinguished American ladies. The likenesses are admirable having been taken from photographs by Brady."</p><p>The key giving the names of each individual portrait was published in issue number 4 of the <i>Chimney Corner</i> on June 24.</p><p>Included in the image are Generals Ulysses S. Grant John G. Foster William T. Sherman Hugh J. Kilpatrick Nathaniel P. Banks Philip H. Sheridan Winfield S. Hancock John A. Logan Joseph Hooker Benjamin F. Butler Oliver O. Howard John A. Dix and Henry W. Slocum. Admirals David Farragut and David Dixon Porter represent the Navy. Members of the cabinet include Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton Secretary of State William H. Seward and Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Members of Congress include Senator Henry B. Anthony of Rhode Island Senator William P. Fessenden of Maine Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts and Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax of Indiana. Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase represents the U.S. Supreme Court. New York newspaper editors Horace Greeley Henry J. Raymond and James Gordon Bennett are also present. Prominent women include First Lady Mary Lincoln Ann S. Stephens dime novelist and magazine editor Miriam Folline Squier wife of Leslie's former editor-in-chief and Leslie's future wife Julia Dent Grant wife of Ulysses S. Grant Kate Chase Sprague daughter of Chief Justice and wife of Rhode Island Senator and Adele Cutts Douglas widow of Stephen A. Douglas. Others identified in the key include Ephraim G. Squier Leslie's former editor-in-chief archaeologist and U.S. commissioner to Peru Governor Andrew G. Curtin of Pennsylvania and Ambassador to Russia Cassius M. Clay of Kentucky.</p><p>Despite Leslie's copyright Anton Hohenstein created a very similar image entitled "Lincoln's Last Reception" which also featured Lincoln's meeting General Ulysses S. Grant's wife Julia. Published by John Smith in Philadelphia in 1865 and hand-colored "Lincoln's Last Reception" also included more than thirty military and political leaders and a few prominent women among the onlookers in the ballroom.</p><p><b><i>Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner</i></b> 1865-1884 was a weekly family newspaper published "every Tuesday" in New York by Frank Leslie. Each illustrated issue of sixteen pages contained serial fiction short stories poetry biographies history travel sketches natural history anecdotes and other subjects. According to the prospectus the newspaper would be "a welcome messenger of instruction and amusement to the young and old in the family and by the fireside—that altar around which cluster our holiest and most cherished recollections." Leslie had copyrighted the title in 1861 but "the great Rebellion now happily closing intervened to put a stop to the enterprise."</p><p><b>Frank Leslie</b> 1821-1880 was born in England as Henry Carter but he adopted the pseudonym of Frank Leslie to keep his artistic activities a secret from his relatives who disapproved. He came to the United States in 1848 and settled in New York in 1853 to engrave woodcuts for P. T. Barnum's <i>Illustrated News</i>. When that publication failed Leslie began work on his own series of illustrated publications including <i>Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper</i> <i>The Budget of Fun</i> <i>Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner</i> and others. At his death he was deeply in debt but his second wife Miriam Folline Squier 1836-1914 continued his publications and again made them profitable even legally changing her name to Frank Leslie in 1881.</p><p><b>Condition</b></p><p>Spot-mounted to modern board mat toning moderate foxing minor edge wear. Would benefit from conservation.</p> Frank Leslie
