Lincoln Abraham Wortman Rev. Denis
A Discourse on the Death of President Lincoln Delivered in the First Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady N. Y.
Albany N.Y.: Weed Parsons & Co. Printers 1865. Wraps. Good . Author's presentation copy "Compliments of Denis Wortman" written in pencil at the top of the title page. A powerful sermon calling for the death of Jefferson Davis and delivered 2 days after the assassination of President Lincoln. Discourse delivered by the Reverend Denis Wortman in a New York town through which Lincoln's funeral train passed. On Wednesday April 26 Lincoln's funeral train departed Albany headed for Buffalo and a 298 mile trip via the New York Central Railroad. Great crowds gathered as the "Lincoln Special" passed through Schenectady; no local newspapers were printed that day buildings were draped businesses closed and 1500 townspeople packed the First Dutch Church to hear this sermon. Controversially Wortman concludes his sermon with a call for the death of Jefferson Davis contradicting the impression of unity that the city's leaders had hoped to project: "If to satisfy the demands of the rebellion the President of the United Sates and his ministers must be infamously slain then to satisfy the demands of this government death and such death as traitors die must fall upon the authors and perpetuators of the rebellion should they fall into our hands" p21. 8vo 22pp. Original printed tan wrappers. Tide mark lower foredge detracts from otherwise bright clean copy. OCLC: 9035628 records only electronic copies.

Weed, Parsons & Co., Printers paperback

Of "The Departure" they write "The painting is a contemporary image of rail travel showing the discomfort of the lower classes traveling in a draughty bench-seated second class carriage. Despite their discomfort this shows how the railways opened up travel to the less wealthy as well as those with money. It also shows how the industry allowed travel nationally and internationally with the posters in the background advertising passage to Australia highlighting the growing trend of emigration.
