A large engraved wall print in two sheets showing the trading and commercial centre of the city of Leiden at the convergence of the Oude Rijn and Nieuwe Rijn canals. Unlike most other Dutch towns Leiden had no central market square so that the waterways formed the major access routes for merchandise. On the banks of the canals there is a lively market that converges on the bridge central in the print. Market traders and customers come and go. Women from the coastal fishing villages of Katwijk and Noortwijk display fresh fish for sale. Right in the print we see the monumental "Waag" the weigh-house built in 1658 following a plan by the Dutch architect and engraver Pieter Post. The splendid relief designed by Rombout Verhulst that crowns the entrance is reproduced with a sharp eye for detail. In front of the building commercial goods are hoisted up from carts and a number of ships for transport to the weigh-house. Several other ships had moored and now continue to their destination. A boat flying the Dutch flag brings in a prominent party while a herald standing precariously at the bow trumpets for right of way. We know of several other wall prints by Schenk depicting local situations with almost photographic detail. Thanks to this detail important socio-historical aspects have been passed on to later generations giving these prints an important cultural meaning today. They were made by the notable Dutch engraver Boetius à Bolswert ca. 1585-1633 after the well-known Dutch painter and draughtsman Abraham Bloemaert 1566-1651 with short letterpress biographies by the Jesuit hagiographer Heribert Rosweyde 1569-1629.The prints were originally published ca. 1610 as two separate series by Boetius à Bolswert himself containing only the name of the saints as in the present state. A second state of the plates is known with a two-line distich below the prints usually dated 1612 but according to Roethlisberger these may actually have been published after the present 1619 publication in book form.With an inscription on title-page "Donum R.P. Heriberti Rosweydi Soc. Jesu." that is donated by the Jesuit author of the text Heribert Rosweyde. Further with a bookplate collector's stamp and several early owner's inscriptions two of them struck through. Lacking the dedication and engraved frontispiece which should follow the letter-press general title-page. Slightly browned throughout and some foxing and minor soiling to the outer edges. This method by Abraham Cornelis Hazewinkel 1772-1842 a ship's captain who established a Dordrecht school for training sailors in 1817 was also invented simultaneously but independently by the Dutch mathematician Rehuel Lobatto 1797-1866 and is known as the Lobatto-Hazewinkel method. It replaced the longer method of Cornelis Douwes introduced in the late 18th century. An equally rare second edition published in 1839 was reprinted in facsimile in 1992.With a library stamp on title-page some occasional foxing one leaf slightly soiled in the lower margins binding slightly rubbed and rebacked with the top of the spine torn. He made a sincere effort to understand the fundamental ideas of Hinduism often denounced by the Europeans as superstitious and abhorrent.Rogerius educated himself about the Hindu customs and beliefs with the aid of two Brahmans who were not supposed to the reveal the Hindu Mysteries but nonetheless instructed Rogerius in the Sanskrit classics. He returned to the Netherlands in 1647 and died in 1649.
