[Adam, William]
Speech of William Adam Esq. On the 6th of April 1810 on Mr. Lethbridge's Motion Respecting Sir Francis Burdett Etc. Etc.
<p>London: J. Ridgway 1810. 5 2-107pp 1. Bound in modern cloth title and date in gilt to spine. Small amount of loss to bottom corner of half-title sporadic light foxing mainly to signatures L and M lightly browned throughout but generally fairly clean. Burdett "who presented the Westminster reform petition 9 Feb. and opposed Wellington's annuity 16 Feb. was unwell on 21 Feb. when John Gale Jones the radical publicist was committed to Newgate for breach of privilege in challenging the right of the House to exclude strangers. He revived the issue 12 Mar. by moving for his release and denouncing the use of privilege as an offensive weapon but he secured only 14 mostly reluctant votes. Cobbett's Political Register of 24 Mar. 1810 reprinted his speech and prefaced it with an address to his constituents impugning the House for illegal exercise of its privilege. Ministers welcomed the issue as a diversion from the Walcheren question and with their connivance Thomas Buckler Lethbridge moved on 27 Mar. that Burdett was in breach of privilege. He stood by his address but the debate was adjourned. On 30 Mar. he supplemented his support for the Whig resolutions on Walcheren with a further call for reform. He was found guilty of a breach of privilege 5 Apr. and on the motion of Sir Robert Salusbury carried by 190 votes to 152 was ordered to be sent to the Tower. On 6 Apr. he gave the serjeant-at-arms who called with the Speaker's warrant the impression that he would go peaceably into custody but when the serjeant reprimanded by Abbot returned later the same day to effect the arrest Burdett told him that he had written to the Speaker to dispute the legality of the warrant and that he would submit only to force. He barricaded himself in his Piccadilly house over the weekend and serious disturbances occurred when troops clashed with the crowds which had assembled under the encouragement of Place and the Westminster radicals. He was taken by force on 9 Apr. when Lord Boringdon commented that 'yesterday was the most anxious day London has known since 1780" History of Parliament Online. Four locations in Library Hub. First editions thus of these catalogues and exceedingly rare complete salesman sample kit for the Wagner Manufacturing garage door hardware in the 1920s. After World War I the explosion and popularity of automobile ownership in the United States created a desperate need to house these often cantankerous and essential machines for homes businesses and commercial fleets. By quickly adapting their hardware sets for elevator doors first introduced before World War I Wagner was able to quickly capitalize on the market growth and need for door hardware to retrofit existing garages as well as new construction. Often coupled with doors produced by Johnson Fimbel Hartford Barber-Colman Overhead and Crawford the Wagner hardware sets proved durable and popular. In addition this sample kit features the specialized steel stud brackets developed by Wagner to help brace garages and sheds adapted for garage doors to hold automobiles as the weight of the doors could damage existing construction as Americans were interested in rolling doors and sectional garage doors rather than traditional swing-out barn-type doors. Wagner 1871-1937 originally founded his company in Cedar Falls IA in 1904 to manufacture children’s sleds coaster wagons and hay rack fixtures with a variety of door hardware. They merge with Star Elevator Doors before World War I and later with Boardman Elevator Control of Chicago with primary customers as Otis Elevator and Westinghouse. In 1934 Wagner began producing the iconic Wagner Overhead Garage Door and by the 1950s had become one of the largest garage door manufacturers in the country. Worldcat locates 1 copy of No. 25 Harvard; and 1 of Wagner-Star Elevator Door Cat Univ. of Kansas; no copies of the other catalogues or examples of the Salesman Sample Model in case. [BLENKINSOP (Adam)]
A Transport Voyage to the Mauritius and back; touching at the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. By the Author of "Paddiana;" "A Hot-Water Cure" etc
London: John Murray 1851. First Edition frontispiece of the ship on the fifteenth morning vii 1 303 1 pp. original cloth gilt hinges a little frayed all edges gilt a nice bright copy. The author set sail from Cork to Port Louis in Mauritius. On the homeward journey he sailed for Port Elizabeth in South Africa and hr gives a short account of what existed in the town at this period. He considered that the old name of Algoa Bat was far more suitable; and depreciated the custom of renaming places in Africa which was so prevalent at this time. Dr. Blenkinsop made a stay of some duration at Cape Town and gives a description of the town and its inhabitants making some facetious remarks on what is termed the "posterial luxuriance" of some of the females of the country. Continuing the journey home he called at St. Helena describing James Town and steered for Ascension Island which he calls "a desolate island". The small British settlement there "exhibits the striking contrast of a green patch on the burnt soil with a few neat white houses." Mendelssohn p.136; Toussaint and Adolphe Bibliography of Mauritius D165. London: John Murray, 1851 hardcover
